I'm german and I would never seriously consider playing on any german gmod server. There are just the biggest nerds (the bad sort of them) and wannabe big boys.
Since I live across the ocean I don't have to see any German or Russian servers, hurray.
Communities, or rather their regular players, that make no effort to interact with randomers or people outside of their small group of friends. Or if regulars do interact, it's mainly to insult them. I think it's mainly bigger communities that do this. I've been on a server with 30+ people and the only ones talking in chat are admins casually and I feel if there's that many players and only a few talking, something is probably wrong.
Admin applications. They provide no insight whatsoever as to whether someone will or won't be a good admin.
Admin applications. They provide no insight whatsoever as to whether someone will or won't be a good admin.
Maybe not, but it does give you a hint whether or not the applicant is dedicated enough. Knowing if someone will or wont be a good admin is near impossible, only the future will tell. Applications is the most proffesional and organised way to handle admin recruitment. And there aren't many other ways to handle it. Handpicking admins isn't much better.

Handpicking admins isn't much better.
I suppose it's the most efficient, but I've found handpicking to be a lot more effective as far as how long admins stay, how dedicated they are and how they play in general. Seeing someone in-game tells a lot more than text does, though if you have a high-volume server or multiple servers I can see how it can easily lose its effectiveness.
I think admin applications are good for getting feedback on people, since if they make a forum thread, it's easier to have people post there than to chase them up and ask what they think.
Every server I attempt to connect to, I got to have to be downloading 100MB packs that are.. "ICRP x Pack #" HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK DO PLAYERS GET OFF TO THESE PACKS NOW?
Better than downloading over 100mb of uncompressed separate files.
And better yet: Items taking too long to download from workshop during server loading I can just cancel out and download the addon in a few seconds. Why is this taking such a fucking long time?
little asshole kids but these aren't the typical kids you see these little assholes... you simply cannot grief, they're not smart or anything, but they are immune to cry, as if they have no emotion but being a complete little asshole

When I was the CityMayhem US Organizer, I usually just went to people and talked to them myself. I tend to ask questions based around philosophy and the concept of "rules". Stuff like... "Can you explain to me what RDM is...?" "Rules are not a preventive measure, they only exist to punish after incident... Why keep them?" "What is Trouble in Terrorist Town? How do things work in TTT? Is is just to ban a man who shoots another man out of paranoia?" My entire theory about recruiting admins is not to hire the admins which read the rules as a bible, but rather use the rules as a guide to explain their work. If you cannot answer philosophical questions, or criticize things about the current efforts of the admin team, I would not recruit you. Simple as that. I cannot stand players who want to become admins to, "Protect the server from mingebags!" those people are the ones you should disqualify immediately. They are brainless followers of the MOTD, or trolls who intend to use the MOTD for their own vices. Several other types of players should follow the same policy... People who openly wear clan tags... Disqualify. People who openly dehumanize other Garry's Modders... Disqualify. Now one that is actually kind of tricky, is narks. People who go about constantly using the "@" command to contact admins regarding things like RDM, and all that. Normally, I'd disqualify these people immediatly, because I know that most of these people are on the same boat as the ones using the MOTD for their own vices. The only time I choose not too, is when I know they attempted with every mechanic in the gamemode, tried to reason with the player, and when all else failed they finally contacted the admin team. I cannot trust people who consistently contact the admins. You have the methods to deal with other players, use them. If someone is MDM'ing, get the Police to break NLR and help you arrest that bastard. If the admins complain, they are MOTD-Bible Humping idiots, and you should report them to a higher up as such. The staff of your servers must be able to trust the players to fix problems on their own accord. Admins should only act on the truly serious problems, such as hackers and people who are downright causing people to leave the server in droves. Just my go at it really.
There's literally one thing I want and that's Poster tool compatibility with Super DOF. Garry, you do that and you're helping a lot of people.
Steam needs an "I don't accept friend invites" option. Garry's mod is the only game people seem to do this in.
Being a dick works great. Tested & Approved.
Being a dick works great. Tested & Approved.
So does being some sort of internet minority, like a furry, brony, weaboo, gay, or something else everybody hates.
So does being some sort of internet minority, like a furry, brony, weaboo, gay, or something else everybody hates.
Only one of those minorities really bothers me. If you really want to be hated, just start quoting homestuck constantly.
Being a dick works great. Tested & Approved.
Doesn't fucking work. I agree that the community would be better off if they followed the golden rule.
