I'm honestly really surprised there isn't just a huge/plain Gmod Deathmatch gamemode, since a lot of people who play other modes just seem to want to kill people constantly :v:
i am one of those people, and I agree that we need a deathmatch gamemode, but not based on darkrp
I think the community is getting bigger, but worse. I'd like to point to SeriousRP. It's dead. But it requires a lot of collaboration. Make sense? Maturity down, people up.
I have always wanted to create a side scrolling cartoony gmod gamemode like jazz jack rabbit(yea I know no ones knows what that is) but I have never started on it because I seriously hate working on something for a lot of hours only for no one to touch it because they want to stick in darkrp.
It makes me want to buy a server only dedicated to spoofing players on a bunch of random servers and literally just spamming the living **** out of the top gamemodes section. I won't do that though cause not only is that retarded as **** it is also wrong.
i am one of those people, and I agree that we need a deathmatch gamemode, but not based on darkrp
I actually made two somewhat successful ones. The first one was codmod which stayed full for a very long time, but at the time I was a idiot with mysql databases and when I tried to improve the performance how the game saved data I didn't know how to transfer the xp over from the sql system into my new system. Well the players didn't like that , even though I gave everyone like 6x the xp so they could quickly get all of it back, and this sorta ended up killing my player base. Some players still played but the other 3 servers I had would never get full again like they used too.
The second gamemode I made "espionage" never really got off the ground because the players didn't want to even touch it. I also never fuilly finnished it becasue we decided to try and turn away from the whole "unlock guns from xp" and went for a "buy guns with points". We also did how csgo has thier ranking system so it would rank people based on their stats and all of the other players stats. We discussed a bunch of different gamemodes with hacking and such in it that we wanted to do but yea I have almost no motivation to continue it because of gmods player-base being like 2 years old.
I think the only reason people even gave my first gamemode a chance was because I had cod in the name.

5th most played game on steam currently
The older player base is being replaced by younger people. With that comes degradation of quality for those who are apart of that older player base that still remains. But by no means is Garry's Mod dying.
Quake 3 Arena
Someone completely ported Quake 3 Arena to Gmod. It's a fast paced twitch arena shooter.
Fuck, i'd play that!
Can you give out a server IP?
Yep, only a few communities I see worth playing.

Run it on Bigcity since it's the only map I bothered to make it work on.

Oh yeah PM me your IP as well if you host it, I'd like to see how it goes for people who do.
On the topic of youngsters playing gmod;
Isn't their a age limit of 13 when you sign up for steam?
Also; Vanoss and other popular youtubers did definitely ruin Garry's Mod's player base. Kids are making minecraft skins, based around the youtubers commentary
and Sandbox servers that get DDoS'd for god knows why.
That's something I've always wondered about. Who is this mysterious entity that feels the need to tank every sandbox under the sun? It's not even a regional thing, servers hosted everywhere from Australia to Britain to Canada have some notice about "we've been DDoS'd recently please sign up to our forums to enable spawn etc"
Just wait a few years, and bam! All the kids are now at a mature age.
I started a new gamemode and it's going strong so far, as long as you make a gamemode that's actually good, stable and doesn't rape you with 9000gb of downloads it's actually not that hard to get off the ground.

there's also an age limit of 18 when visiting porn sites
nobody respects age limits on the internet
The problem right now is a lack of creativity within the development community. I personally blame the lack of good GLua documentation, Scriptfodder/Coderhire, and how everyone is treating GMod as a business now for why Garry's Mod is overall dieing in the creativity department.
As long as my favorites servers are populated, it's not dead to me.
I've been playing garrysmod since gmod 9.0,
I've seen garrysmod change a lot of times, and at least 3 generations of children. In fact, in Gmod 9.0 it was so bad we always used to joke about the weekdays being better to play on because the kids were at school.
The point I'm trying to make here people like me who have been here from the start are still here, and still find the game very enjoyable.
Maybe not as enjoyable as we perviously did, but we are still on the game. I think this will continue for a while, until a better alternative appears. But considering garrysmod is a very unique game, I don't ever think there will be a solid alternative to garrysmod.
Well, unless you consider JBMod.
I think that Garry's Mod is as good as dead.
The reason it became popular was a great deal due to the community and the developers.
The community's shit, and the developers are jumping ship. Now what?
People who want to blame 'garry's mod dying' on things like CoderHire are just looking for something to blame instead of doing something about it. Kids have always played this game, communities have always ddosed each other, old coders have left and new ones joined. Nothing has changed other than people now sometimes sell their work instead of giving it away, meaning some of the creativity is locked away from the general community.
I realised part of the problem for lack of creativity/ideas/learning material was that garrysmod.org was dead. There were tons of models, maps, sounds, materials and code that were gone which people learn from as well as actually use. Fixing old broken addons is a great way to get into coding, and the resources available there were great for people developing new stuff, which is why I wanted to bring it back and have done so.
Instead of moaning, how about creating something new and exciting? Look through some of the old uploads, think of something that would be fun to play with your friends.
Can't code? Learn to. Don't want to learn? Tell your amazing ideas to someone who can and let them it. No ideas? Run forgotten about gamemodes on your server instead of TTT or DarkRP - make a thread about dead gamemodes that need fixing/reviving and get the community involved. No money to run servers? See point 1 - people are more than willing to run new stuff.
There will always be people who want to commercialise stuff, hell, even I'm guilty of that, but it doesn't stop me want to give back to the community and spending my own time and money bettering it instead of moaning.

I kinda agree with this myself.
Ever since the "standardised" methods of selling your work have appeared, developers who can actually make cool and unique things seem to have been pushed to the back in favour of developers who can make DarkRP modifications and awful TTT scripts because "wow i pay mone 4 dis, its bestest!". Servers seem to largely be a dick measuring contest based on how much you've paid for your run of the mill scripts. Why make unique things for free that will be buried under an avalanche of paid for shovelware? Why not just start making that shovelware yourself to a slightly higher quality?
I thought shit was bad when it was just conna and his terrible roleplaying scripts being sold, never thought I'd see the day when everything was a possible product in GMod.
Also fucking burn RP to the ground, it's dull, uninteresting and floods the server listings. I'd love to find a good, solid, not full of idiots but not full of elitists build server again, I really miss one of the first ones I ever joined the community for.
tbh i think the new gmod 13 server browser killed gmod in ways
everybody sees how populated ttt and dark rp is, when they see no other player on any other gamemode
normally it used to be kinda spread out between what gamemodes were played

YES. THIS. Imo we need to just make the gamemode listings randomized and not display player/server count (Total players and/or Servers should be at the top of the list when you go into a gamemode subsection).

I don't mean to sound like a snarky shit here, but what gamemodes have gotten popular in the last year or so? I'd honestly be willing to try them, but all just seemed to be RP modes and then Gmod DayZ which I do quite enjoy
The last gamemode to get popular, in my mind, would probably have to be Murder? Which was in, like, October 2013, so that's a bit of a downer and I'd love to be proved wrong
Garry's mod just isn't cool anymore. It was unique, special, but its steam simply ran out.
The most important reason is the now incredibly outdated source engine. Everyone who creates content like models and maps is moving onto new engines. This could be neglected when source was 5-6 years old, but now the very core on which the engine is based on is 10 years old and severely limited, not to mention ugly. Thats relatively speaking, of course.
Furthermore, the base content is also about 10 years old and I for one am sick and tired of it. Yet any attempt to use other content fails naturally because of large download sizes and horribly low percentages of people who own for instance episode 2, let alone left 4 dead.
Finally, gmod wasnt popular because of sandbox but because of other gamemodes. The people who once made gamemodes for gmod (because it was relatively easy to do so) are now making standalone games for new engines like unreal and unity that make the process dead easy compared to engines about 5 years ago and are amassing huge communities too.
There were always many kids playing gmod, but it is the old guard that simply moved on. Its only natural because gmods limits have been reached. There can be new ideas, sure, but most avenues have already been explored and seen.
It was a nice ride and we still can hope for a couple of years of stagnation. But in the end like all good but old games gmod will be played by about 100 or so loyal fans living in the past.

GME Build's pretty good about that. ACF/SProps/good staff/not too many addons/inclusive. If there's any elitism on that server I haven't seen it, and my suspension techniques are more or less GM11 relics at the newest.
I love playing there myself.

Garry's mod got the sixth place of most played game on steam. That's pretty good.

I'm trying to make Q3A popular, but people don't want to play arena shooters apparently. I even want a mutator script for it, but I don't have the dosh to ask someone to code it.

PM what you want coded, I'll see what I can do.
Thanks, PM sent.
My opinion: It's dying in player quality, not quantity. All the little children watching Pewdiepie, Minx and Markiplier play game modes improperly on their own private servers and then copying how they play on Public servers really hurts the community. The community is beginning to be dominated by these Youtuber-Clones who think it's okay to play like the way Mark, Pewds and Minx(other youtubers included) do on public servers, breaking rules like Ghosting, RDM, Ect.
My thought? Youtubers stop playing, Garry's Mod becomes that game no one really pays attention to anymore, people pick it up while it's on sale and give it a whirl and learn to play properly and not play how an idiotic Youtuber plays it, maybe the community will go back to normal.
And get rid of the FNAF BS.
