What's the point in hosting a 24/7 listen server... ?
So you want a 24/7 lan server? with just two players in it? There are ways to save your contraptions you know.
Oh, I am not related to the guy with his sister. I am a normal guy that hosts a 24/7 internet server with 24 slots. But I can't play while hosting.
We don't want to use the crappy listen server that uses way more resources to run than a dedicated server. Even playing and hosting dedicated server on the same computer is better than running listen server and playing in it. Now when it's not possible to host dedicated and play Gmod on same computer it is possible to clearly see the benefit we have had before. I hope this gets fixed some day. Or at least someone is giving some answers what is the situation and is there going to be any fix at all.
Bumping. Can't give up. We got to get a fix.
Bumping. Can't give up. We got to get a fix.
Bumped....
Now I'm able to run dedicated server and play GMod in it on same computer. All I had to do is to run another operation system under VMWare virtual computer, have network access bridged to real hardware and have the server running there... Still waiting for the real fix, not a single one answer from "higher powers" yet.
Does what you're trying to do work in TF2 or any other multiplayer game? AFAIK, Source doesn't like what you're trying to do on default settings.
Running dedicated server and playing Gmod on same computer has been working since beginning of Gmod 9 when I started playing it. That's all about "Source doesn't like it or that, or maybe something else". Update broke it for some reason.
I'll take a whack at it tonight. I am assuming that the setup is this: Running a DS on the same box you fire up a client. destor's workaround suggests this, as well as it was not made clear that the DS was running on a separate box. I assume this because I run DS on a separate box in the other room and have Internet players (and myself) connect to it fine.. before and after the engine conversion update(s). Other than being lagtastic, I can run "multiple" DS servers on that box without problems. Example, garrysmod and hl2mp (different ports, of course).

PSP401 brings up a good point. I recently migrated to a new gaming rig. Thus, the "old" one is now my new "server" box. When I first fired up the server, it gave me this error message. Why? The -ip 192.168.x.x was wrong for this box (a batch file, contained the "old" address). Here is what a netstat showed me as far as new listeners (no TCPs, go fig) once the server was started: 26901 24005 27016 (this is the port for the server, specified by the -port 27016) 27020 I will go to my gaming rig and check ports listening after I fire up GMod. Update: And now that I did, here is what I saw: When I started Steam, it gobbled up UDP 1048 and 1050. When I started GMod and joined the game, here's what it took (all UDP) 1057 1058 27005 27015 27020 From these preliminaries, you can already see a potential conflict with 27015. If my server were set to that port, I'd likely have a problem. Pulling the server files to my gaming rig for the "same box" test. Ok. First, there were no problems when I left the server port at 27016. I then both server and client down and reset the server port to 27015. STILL, no problem. Heh, the client took UDP 27016 instead. ;) Sanity check, from the console: Network: IP 192.168.x.x, mode MP, dedicated Yes, ports 27015 SV / 27005 CL Check the -ip param. Or, if you only have one address, don't bother setting it. Edit: Nope. The only change between boxes were the IP addresses. I first changed the address to the new "proper" one, then tried again without the switch at all. Made no difference. The "old" server, the "old rig now new server", and the "new rig" are all on one happy LAN.
I haven't made any (network) settings between the server working and not working. I haven't used any ip or port commands, everything has been working "out-of-box" without any problems until now. My computer is behind ADSL and switch, one IP address, no hardware firewall or NAT or nothing. Everything as before. When trying to set different port for DS error message changes also a little as explained before. By running DS without any problems on a same box in virtual system under VMware makes me think there must be some compability problem between the new update and DS when using them in a same box. Maybe this is some sort of feature of the new engine, or maybe some bug of GMod dedicated server. As said before -Running GMod DS and using multiplayer on CS:S works (CS:S doesn't use EP2 engine?) -Running GMod DS and using multiplayer on GMod doesn't work -Running GMod DS and using multiplayer on TF2 doesn't work Connecting thing is the new EP2 engine, and GMod dedicated server.
I don't see how it could be a feature as it is a major flaw to be honest. I need this to be fixed soon, I was going to have a hoverboard server =p
Well it's never worked for me! :S Have you changed your network setup at all between it working and it not working?
Not very helpfull but I come from an other thread talking about the same problem as you all have! the ENGINE ERROR Nothing worked so far trying to correct this error. Anyone can join my DS on 1 PC anyone BUT me :(
Is there away to make gmod use a different port? Maybe that fix the problem with gmod and DS
Bumping.
Is there away to make gmod use a different port? Maybe that fix the problem with gmod and DS
I'm running it on a slightly different port "27205" to be exact. It may work for you however. Just add "-port 27205" to the properties.
No, i set my ports on the router and DS and still no luck, I set the server to any other port besides 27015, it won't show up on my server list and when i try to connect to a server while DS is running, i get the error again.
This is one, serious, problem. This GOT to have a fix. We can't allow valve to stay lazy on this.
This is one, serious, problem. This GOT to have a fix. We can't allow valve to stay lazy on this.
You are right!
Well, if you know valve time, they will take there sweet time. VALVe Time http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time
My friend and I have tried using hamachi to host over the internet, but my game doesn't appear in lan when the lan box is checked and when I do host it over the internet it says. The game runs fine and everthing. Failed to connect after 4 retries. I turned off my Mcafee firewall and his firewall is off too. It worked fine before the update so unless Garry added a secret "allow hosting button" somewhere in gmod I don't know what is wrong. Anyone else having a problem like this? Edit: Just realized there is another thread for this problem.
Well it's a problem on your end guys, I can host a game without problems whenever I want to.
Well it's a problem on your end guys, I can host a game without problems whenever I want to.
Can you run latest GMod _Dedicated_ server and join your own GMod multiplayer game on the same computer at the same time? Dedicated server is not the "Create Multiplayer" button inside GMod main menu..
He says that he can HOST a game without problems he didn't mention anything about joining it so i'd assume he doesn't try to play on his own server. I'm still hoping this gets fixed it's really ticking me off :P
Looks like it's a problem in the whole EP2 engine. Sucks..
Alright so I was messing around with it and I completely reinstalled my gmod 10 server again only to find out that hamachi was the cause of this horrid adventure. All you have to do is disable hamachi and connect to your game via lan. It should help! EDIT: It's still not working, I felt so close this time too. :(
It's not a port problem, i just tried gmod on port 27020 with no luck. -port 27020 is the correct command for Set Launch Options right?
Yeah, it is.
Haha, I filled in a steam support ticket. What I wrote was this:
Hey guys! I have this really annoying problem when I try to connect to my own GMOD server. What happens is when I try to connect to my dedicated server [[ Via internet, or via lan ]] all it gives me is an engine error exactly as shown in the topic title. I know, you guys don't own gmod however it's a problem with TF2 too. I believe it is an all around error with the new dedicated server software as I was completely able to play on my own server previous to this update. I'd just really like to get on my own server and play with my humble followers - Please help me in doing so! Thank you, Anthony.
and they replied with...
Hello Tim, Unfortunately, Steam Support is unable to provide assistance with Source SDK, Mapping and Dedicated Server questions. The websites below are the best resources for help with your specific problems.
I laughed about the different name thing. They also gave me a bunch of links which did nothing which isn't any bit surprising.
