So, I was also having this problem. Couldn't join my own Dedi server. I added the launch options and I can connect now, but it gets stuck at 'Retreving server info'. Any ideas?
If its your own server, reinstall it. If your trying to join another, reinstall your gmod. You might also have a bad addon. Try removing all your addons and load them one at a time.
i get same problem :(
i got same problem
I think those guys aren't trying to join our own servers as opposed to us wanting to join our own servers however we are met by this immensely aggravating error :(
No I know have a friend with an rp server who plays on his own server all the time.
Solution:
Go into YOUR garrysmod cfg folder (not the servers), and if there is no autoexec.cfg, create one, if there is one, edit it and add these lines:
hostport 27016
clientport 27006
tv_port 27021
Believe me this is a solution until the official one comes from Garry or ValVe if they ever bother to get one...
Well my friend tried that but when he connects to his server he gets the same error ... Even though he can connect other servers without a problem ...
How can you edit your .CFG file? All it says to me, is that I can't view the file, since my computer doesn't have that compatibility.

Scratch that,
I just edited it in Notepad, duh.
I'm having the same problem as a few of the peeps in here. Port 27015 is open, but can't join my own dedicated server.
Tried the hostport_27016 trick, doesn't work for me.
Halp?
good news, heres the way how to fix it
you need to port forward this ports:
27016
27021
then right click to the srcds.exe shorcut and then find Target, add this with space after:
+hostport 27016 +tv_port 27021
the whole thing should look like this:
C:\HLServer\orangebox\srcds.exe -game garrysmod +hostport 27016 +tv_port 27021
goto ...steamapps\[accountname]\garrysmod\garrysmod\cfg\
open config.cfg with notepad
add this into the file:
clientport 27006
hostport 27016
tv_port 27021
save the file and you finished

Somebodylol said it wrong.
You go to DRIVELETTER:\program files\steam\steamappes\[accountname]\garrysmod\garrysmod\cfg
but you add a new text document called autoexec.cfg.
put in:
clientport 27006
tv_port 27021
hostport 27016
Save it.
Now it will always plug in those 3 ports at startup.
no this one is better:
right click to the srcds.exe shorcut in your desktop and then find Target, add this with space after garrysmod word:
+hostport 27016 +tv_port 27021
the whole thing should look like this:
C:\HLServer\orangebox\srcds.exe -game garrysmod +hostport 27016 +tv_port 27021
if you have private router you need to port forward this ports:
27016
27021
ill try this and ill edit on my way on to the server or even not at all!
EDIT
It works on both steam and gmod!
Antivirus
I have same issue! I started today. One hour ago! Wtf?! :(
BUMP...
EDIT:
I got it to work!
I changed tv_port, hostport and clientport in game before i joined the server.
This does work! I did the same, and it worked!
I am going to do the same thing, ;).
have used vmware for soo many reason, why not now :P
ok mabey its old topic but i got a problem last time i had couldn't allocate any hltvip port and now i have couldn't allocate any ip port when i added +hostport 27016 +tv_port 27021 anyone? >.<
OK here's something that will make this very complicated.
I don't have any dedicated server running at all on my computer. I just want to play my valve games, but when I launch say Team Fortress 2 or Counter Strike Source, I get the same error message you all have.
This will have you all scratching your heads I'm sure.
I just wanted to play on a normal valve official server but no matter what server I join I just can't.
Maybe someone has a similar problem but looks like I wont be able to play any half life engine games for a while :,(
hmm interesting error... i dont know how to fix it doe but hey.
