script fodder packed servers are typically more fun

If your idea of fun is "MUG DROP 2K OR DIE IF YOU SO MUCH AS BREATHE ILL CALL AN ADMIN TO BAN YOU" then yes... it is very fun.

I beg to differ. Literally any gamemode, no matter how small it is, is better than DarkRP. Identical servers get so dull and boring after a while. You could literally predict every servers loadscreen, rules, addons and jobs before you even join.

Considering your gamemodes have been cheap knockoffs of mine where's your original idea to save the day?
I also agree that some may be more fun but that's just to people that want to try something new. The server browser discourages new, which is an issue.

Not for me or many other people, but there's an audience for that shit, the numbers pretty much reflect it. Server popularity is based on how much fun and how many people are having that fun, that's pretty much it.

Mhm, you clearly showed up to try provoke me. I'll make a few things clear.
1) My gamemode was an MMORPG including loot, quests, etc, and yours was "Serious Role Play" so what you just said makes no sense. How can it be a ripoff if it's not in the same category of RP. The only similarity was the setting of it.
2) You got credit for the models and map, but apparently this wasn't enough? You acted as if you personally owned these models even though no matter who ports them, the original owners are and will always be Bethesda and obsidian.
3) A mass multiplayer Fallout gamemode with a quests system does seem like a original idea to me. What other active server offers this? Really, I wanna know.
Also why do you say "gamemodes"? My previous gamemode was a City based RP and the one after was a Fallout 4 RP. Both of which look nothing like your gamemode in the slightest. Using the same models doesn't make anything a rip off, that'd mean every server would be rip offs of eachother unless they ported/made every model themselves. Trying to keep it nice and friendly but throwing random false accusations for no reason is a dick thing to do.
Also, if I was to "rip off" any gamemode, yours would be the last one id ever consider doing.

It's that very audience we are all complaining about. The typical 12vie who followed VenturianTale or Pewdiepie or GriefyIsHere or InsertYoutuberHere from youtube to DarkRP and then proceeded to poison the gamemode with their obnoxious rules such as "FearRP" and "You have to advert LITERALLY EVERYTHING" and "pay $15 to get access to the remaining 75% of content on the server that just so happens to also be extremely OP"
Then when DarkRP quits phasing these kids, they move on to TTT with their "CUSTOM 24/7 MINECRAFT TTT SERVERS" filled with the exact same scoreboard, weapons, damagelogs, and pointshop as the last 30 servers before it, or Stop it Slender (now featuring 5 slenders with FNAF models) or Prophunt (now featuring the ability to pick up props with E thus completely destroying the point of "prop hunt". Or minge & kill sandbox servers... or <insertname>RP... etc etc etc.
The list can go on. I just started feeling depressed at <insertname>RP.

I was explaining this then? I don't care what other people find interesting since their fun has never affected mine, some servers that are custom rather than script fodder copy pasta or perp can be incredibly boring to play. CarlRP seemed pretty cool and even had custom models yet it was still extremely boring.
People are chasing after what is fun for them and what they can easily access.

I came into this thread to voice my opinion. I did make a jab that wasn't even meant to be taken that seriously, but you're very sadly mistaken if you think I care enough to go out of my way that much for some dude on the Internet.

Mate, you quite literally accused all the work that I've put my time and effort into as being "rip offs" of yours and expect me to let it slide.

It wouldn't surprise me, you don't seem like someone with too many hobbies.
Can we get back on topic?

It was a cheap jab, I still made it but it wasn't meant to be more then that.

Okay...? I don't know if that's supposed to be insulting considering all I do is work, socialize and play video games.
Can we get back on topic?
Sure, if want me to get the ball rolling tell me how you feel about the following statement.
The quality and variety of content in gmod is declining but a server owner that can sell his server well to people has an even bigger chance of sticking out due to saturation of gameplay available.

I agree that the quality and variety is in steep decline, however I feel that the way an owner sells his/her server is irrelevent to popularity, rather how they market the server is how it gets out there.

If you're gonna start making jabs, at least get your facts right. Anyways, thats the end of that.

Anyone can put convincing words on their server desc/name but if it's no different to others I don't see why people would stick about as regular players. Plus, it makes it easier for devs that know what they're doing, with their custom content it'll make them stand out and with a decent starting playerbase, they will stick out greatly in time.
look at superior servers and virtually every darkrp server
superior servers has like 100 players on each server and darkrp has over 10k players at usual times
to put that into perspective, 50,000 players are usually on gmod
A bit late to the party, but...

Marketing is what I meant by saying selling the server.

Yeah, its a real bank company based in Norway but available in quite a few Scandinavian countries (including Sweden). Need to change the .se part though.
Haven't played garrys mod in like 4 years and I decided to come on here to see how things were doing. Sad to see the game has changed so much but I'm much happier with the fact that I've moved on in general

Its not nearly as bad as people like to paint it to be. But nonetheless, wise decision you made :p

It's not like theres no worthwhile content at all. Looking past the shitty DarkRP servers, small gamemodes and some NS servers could be entertaining for you
I started playing Gmod9 who knows how long ago, so I could join in wit some friends at a local LAN party. A year or so later I saw Gmod was available and knowing me it was probably in offer at the time I bought it. I was sad to see that it no longer included Melon Racer.
I heard about Stargate mod, saw some screenshots and had to get it. From there I discovered that wasn't much fun without somewhere to actually go, so I got SpaceBuild. Then followed a lot of trial and error as I tried to get things working right, spent a lot of time playing SP SB. All the time I've ever played Gmod 10/12/13 had been offline with very few exceptions. I ran a server out of my bedroom for a while and while I did have a few connections I could never get fastdl working right so that limited my options. This was before Workshop and even before Toybox.
I still play Gmod from time to time. I once spent nearly 24 continuous hours playing a map on my own trying to solve a particularly awkward math related Wiremod problem. I've contributed to the CAP project (not much. Most of my contributions were immediately recoded by someone better!) and I'm watching the relaunch of SB with interest.
I have a life, I go off and play any other games for a while. Garrysmod has always been there for me when I come back, whether that's from a 2 year stint in Minceraft or a year playing Skyrim, or even my faltering attempts to get good at Rust (hint: I'm not). It has been there while I have completed my postgraduate studies, found jobs, change careers, got married. There are always players who come to places like this or to Reddit to whine about what's broken today - and to share what amazing thing they've done today. Rate me rainbows if you like but that's what "Gmod community" is to me. I've never cared for RP but I know a lot of others really like it. Good for them.
I've been playing gmod for 10 years. It's not going to die any time soon. Even 5-8 years ago, roleplay and such was just as prevalent. The true building communities (ones that don't build like shit, and actually make optimized things) is still going strong as well. Couldn't give a shit about rp and other stuff, building is what I've always done.

garry has always been slowly killing the building community. The current dev did a masterful fuckup to parenting- parented ents that had a constraint previously can no longer collide with world.
We would parent the wheels of tanks to reduce the network usage, since we usually run 4-6 tanks at a time. Now we can't do that, and the server is far more stressed.
