Compared to you, I'm not playing GMod for that long to compare things to how they were back in the old days but within the two and a half years I'm playing now, I haven't seen one single server where the default duplicator was not used to blindly spam and then remove a lot of dupes every few seconds, which caused hell of server lags. Be it fireworks, wooden buildings, vehicles or whatever.
Any decent build server has the tool disabled and that's for a very good reason.
If you really think that access to workshop dupes mysteriously helps getting newcomers into building more easily, then at least have adv. dupe 2 being default.
Tell me exactly what stops people from copying those workshop buildings with adv dupe or adv dupe 2 and spawning them with those tools to lag the server instead? It's not the dupe tool that's at fault here.
Anyone else notice the size of the trails icons scaling bigger and smaller all the time when selecting the trails tool?
Care to elaborate? Pictures? Gifs? Videos? Anything?
Yeah, you are right, this looks sooo much better than the current one.

That does actually look pretty damn awesome.

I haven't used it in years, but IIRC it temporarily froze everyone's game every time a dupe was spawned. Probably because it spawns all the objects at once and not gradually like advanced duplicator.

The people doing that don't even know the slightest thing about dupe2 in most cases. Of course that's a possibility but it's also a lot of work for the common sandbox beginner.
PS:
The difference isn't big but the menu keeps flickering back and forth between the two scales.

That is caused by a bug with all the scrolling panels in the game and needs solving. You can fix it for now by changing your resolution or spawnmenu_border convar.
The only thing I miss about the old spawn menu was the cached, smooth and lagless search.
I really hate searching for something and it rapes my game (and disk resources) sifting through stuff, and then only displays a limited number of results. Sure, in the old one you had to refresh the cache if you added anything new, but it wasn't required for every search.
Was there a reason why it was changed?
ok.
you can just look at the object in and type this into console (if your in singleplayer or the server allows lua):
lua_run_cl print(LocalPlayer():GetEyeTrace().HitTexture)
I guess, that isn't the point of user friendliness.
Just fix the damn server browser and all will be forgiven.
Would anyone else agree that adding a textbox over the list of Tools to filter what I'm looking for would be the greatest thing the spawn menu could get.
On a server with like 100 different tools and Wiremod in combination you get easily lost in the huge list.

Wiremod already has a tool search option. And it's very useful.

So its limited to Wiremod and the condition of having it.

You can search tools with the spawnmenu search. And you can add your favorite tools to your custom spawnlists.

You mean, filter gamemode names for "RP" in their name and automatically put them on the very bottom of the list?

maybe i will when the spawnmenu search doesn't cause the game to freeze
i think a specific tool search would be good until that can be fixed

But it doesn't cause the game to freeze. Even with my shitty 5200 RPM HDD it doesn't freeze. The tool search is instant.
I do agree that the search itself is a bit shit, and I'd like to add ability to only search specific content, be it tools, weapons or props only.

the underestimatement is real :joy:
Also running a 5200 RPM HDD here and my client often freezes up entirely and sometimes crashes afterwards if I try to use the spawnmenu search.
The only addon packs adding models which I use are wiremod, acf, sprops and the mounted games are ep1 and ep2

I can vouch for this, The only mounted games I have are Ep1, Ep2, Lost Coast, I have a few workshop maps subbed but that's all. Whenever I use the Q Menu top left search bar to try and find a specfic prop, My game either crashes or freezes for over 5 minutes.
I can semi-vouch too. My $900 meme making machine comes to a borderline quadriplegic 3 fps when searching crap for like, 30 seconds. I will admit about half of it though is more to do with generating icons but even still, searching causes some major pain.
Looking neat!

just find a way to readd search caching and i'll be happy, i don't like needing to leave the spawn menu for an upwards of 3 minutes while everything gets searched for
I don't see how you can have crashing from search itself unless you have like 1.5ghz single core processor with 512mb ram and 5200RPM 10 year oldHDD or something. Or you are mistaking the search crashing you and the spawnicon render crashing you on very specific l4d, portal 2 and csgo models.

It already caches for each session, there will not be a cross section caching because there's no cheap and reliable way to detect when a rebuild is needed and manual is not an option as it would be a straight downgrade.
I have a more "optimized" cache builder, which is admittedly slower time-wise, but doesn't lag as much.
There's no good "fits everyone" solution for this.
I could add a way for mods to override the search provider for props so a mod could add caching with manual rebuild, but I won't be putting that into the vanilla game for sure.

Video > Kinda shows what we mean, It happens right when I search for combine then freezes
Only crashes I've had from searching is from "bad" spawn icons generating and my game having a heart attack from it. Though, that happened in Gmod 12 as well, so that's just source being shitty I guess.
I just committed better search performance to Dev, if those of you who have freezes and crashes from it could test it out if its any better, please do and provide feedback once the build server gets online again.
https://steamdb.info/app/4000/history/
It's live now, so please test it on Dev branch.
I do like meself some quality UI changes. Looking forward to this change.
All tool changes should be live on Dev branch in a matter of hours.

If you plan on adding new default tools, consider this one:

Scion did some great work there.

If anything, the only tools that should be added are ones that were removed from GM13 (RT, Leafblower, etc)
