• Sandbox Tool improvement
You're the one proposing a change, you have to make the argument. The lack of quality dupes on the workshop is irrelevant and has nothing to do with the tool.
Well, let's rock it then. 1st, the spawnrate. Dupe2 doesn't spawn + unfreeze everything at once like the regular duplicator does, so it greatly avoids lag if the spawnrate cvar isn't directly set to 1 (such will still cause spawnlag when spawning highprop contraptions) 2nd, the lack of offset control and preview. Not a major thing but greatly helps if you wanna spawn something in a specific location in a specific angle, especially preview helps to see if the dupe will fit on your location or not. 3rd, proper file management. You know just as well about how helpful it is being able to create folder structures with Dupe2. Regular duplicator cannot do that, it simply displays a gigantic clusterfuck of bad quality preview icons. It also makes backups look way more cleaned up. 4th, area duping. Everyone who builds contraptions with parented bodies knows that this feature is essential in Dupe2. 5th, display additional info such as entity amount, constraint amount. If you want an example of when this is useful, hop on Cre8ive when they got 10-13 active players around. Estimating if that specific contraption from your countless other contraptions won't cause lag is easy when being able to check if it has 30 constraints or 300. (though I gotta admit, I don't know what exactly counts as "entity" on that amount line. I know it's not just the props though.) And if anyone thinks that constraints don't cause that much lag, go hop on any build server with ACF and have four people doing an all out tank battle. The net graph won't allow you to see much from the battle for sure. And yes, while the quality of workshop dupes is not tied to the duplicator tool itself directly, that tool is the reason why that shitpile of dupes can be accessed so easily. So if you really want to keep it, at least cut the connection to the workshop. People who make quality contraptions, don't release them on workshop anyway. PS: Something for point 4, what about making multiparent/unparent vanilla? It's as easy to use as most vanilla tools and for building, it's a very essential tool. I also don't directly hate new and experienced players. Just the vast amount of kids on Sandbox, which do nothing but wasting time on workshop dupes. The point with the updates is understandable though, unless Robotboy leaves the general development of Dupe2 up to the wireteam and only includes the updates and fixes they made in the GMod git, if that's possible. That way, it could be vanilla and still receive fixes at a higher pace than GMod gets regular updates.
i don't agree with making advanced duplicator 2 vanilla, mainly for singleplayer games where you can just copy and paste as fast as your computer can handle it, but for multiplayer, having at least some kind of spawn limiter for the duplicator would be essential in not ruining someone's game session. who wouldn't want to duplicate several box forts down instantly? even tiny delays make people impatient
Well, let's rock it then.
Half of those are things that could easily be added to the duplicator tool, and the rest aren't really reasons to replace it, just a list of observable differences between the two tools.
People who make quality contraptions, don't release them on workshop anyway.
Those people are a minority and they and the servers they play on already use advdupe2 anyway.
Those people are a minority and they and the servers they play on already use advdupe2 anyway.
The whole build community is a minority among Sandbox. Do you want it to stay that way? It feels like that community is getting slower by the month and I don't know what else could be the cause of that, if not the massive pile of bullshit the gamemode is infested with. Personally, I'd like if the community was growing instead of shrinking. It would increase the chance of new mappers popping up as well and people making more different build friendly maps to give a variety between the servers. Right now, build servers are pretty much like DarkRP in a way. Wherever you play, you have either carcon, buttes, (recently) buttes2 and then there's genesis build with its map that doesn't have the two main areas connected via elevators or ramps. And I haven't checked the workshop dupe section in pretty much about a year I think. I only remember it being flooded with sexpose dupes, fnaf dupes, smart-weld vehicles (whoever made that tool, deserves a kick in the butt anyway.) and other stuff which either lags a server, crashes it or has the sole reason to piss people off.
