Ok guys, I was hoping to avoid this but here goes. The AWS bill is already up to $100 this month and I expect it to be over $200 by the end of the month. I simply can't absorb that much. I don't want to restrict downloads, enforce timeouts between downloads or anything like that. I wouldn't mind putting adverts on there for Garry's Mod related services or something similar, but definitely not community advertisements. Does anyone have any better ideas on how to monetise the site?
When I type something in the search bar, the suggestions pop-down menu goes off the bottom of the screen, which is a problem because the button to go to the actual search page is at the bottom.
Will fix this. [editline]15th April 2015[/editline]
Could I be verified? I'm all about feeling special oh jvs you know how to treat a lady
Done.

I can see it now: A banner at the top of the page, a community can pay to change the text at the top of the page for a minor fee, watch as war breaks out when communities fight to have their text on top of the page, all while you rake in the money :)
Why can't fucking garry not host it instead of you
What difference does it make? The original site was no where near as good as this.
What difference does it make? The original site was no where near as good as this.
The costs involved in running it.
Why can't fucking garry not host it instead of you
First off, Garry isnt hosting it. Second, garrysmod.org was dropped in favor of the Workshop, which (At least to me) says that Garry/Facepunch had no intention of reviving such a website in the first place. Personally, I believe that this website is a positive step for Garrysmod and the addon community in general. As long as the website is properly curated and moderated I dont see why people should favor the Workshop over this.
The only site I could think of comparing download wise was Filefront. They usually have generic survey questions about products. Then once you answer say a minimum of 5 questions, you download the file. One reason I like this is because when I answer all the questions I can earn survey free downloads for a certain amount of time. No exclusive offers, no size restrictions, and no f___ing video ads. I can stand buffering, I can stand ads, but I can't stand buffering ads. Outside of the suggestions you made, Google Adsense seems to be popular, but I would prefer not having to resort to that. Otherwise, you could try donations.
Couldn't you make garrysmod.org downloads download from Garry's server? Maybe make large files have to use an external download?
That's a good point actually. I'll contact garry about garrysmod.org downloads using bandwidth on his AWS account instead of mine, that would drastically reduce the bill for me.
Couldn't you make garrysmod.org downloads download from Garry's server? Maybe make large files have to use an external download?
Well then, I guess I worded what I was trying to say badly. Ott pretty much summed up what I was trying to say
Got my first donation! Not sure if your $0.10 cut will be helpful...
Adam, how much storage + bandwidth you using?
Adam, how much storage + bandwidth you using?
A lot.
Adam, how much storage + bandwidth you using?
1TB transfer, 50GB storage, 6.2 million requests. The transfer is 90% of the cost. [editline]18th April 2015[/editline] I added adsense ads to the header and footer when you're logged out, and it's nice to know that I've earned more from those (£0.27) than I have through donation cuts ($0.10 - ($0.30 + 3.9%) = $0.00)!
I am glad to see that this is back.
I am glad to see that this is back.
What? Nothing happened to it in the first place?
is there an direct paypal adress for donating? So if i wanted to donate 3 Bucks, i don't need to donate 27 bucks to exho.
Is aws really the best choice? It's damn expensive..
is there an direct paypal adress for donating?
Also I now see why the ads are working so well... perfect. [t]http://puu.sh/hi755/e6f3e710fb.png[/t]
Every torrent and warez site ever. [editline]18th April 2015[/editline] Any chance you could maybe border the ads? They look weird just floating there.
Hello Adam, i have checked my addon series but it says submitted by garrysmod.org and my lastest version which was the popular one is missing, can you fix that please? Have a nice day

Have a nice day
Use the report function to get your uploads moved back to your account and as for the one that's missing, feel free to reupload it. [editline]18th April 2015[/editline] This might actually be viable.
Did not expect my FC3 edits to be second on the popular page.
Stupid question, but why not make the bot account a verified account? That way you can get donations that way.
Stupid question, but why not make the bot account a verified account? That way you can get donations that way.
I thought of the same thing but I thought he might just not want to seem like he was begging for money?
So have all the original files from garrysmod.org been moved over?
So have all the original files from garrysmod.org been moved over?
most of them. I doubt all
Around 18k of 135k have. It's only the ones that were linked to externally. I'll get around to indexing the rest of the files and making a tool to search them today probably.
