this isn't even about money, it's about time. a VERY generous estimate placing the end product at 100000 lines of code with 200 lines of code per man/hour would leave this at 500 man/hours. working 5 hours a day straight would take one (impossibly experienced and effective) programmer 100 work days. assuming 260 work days in a year, with no vacations, we're talking about 40% of an entire YEAR working like a slave for just a thousand dollars.
to put it in perspective, working a minimum wage job for the exact same amount of time would yield 3625 US$.
Seems excessive, considering what I've already seen gmod is capable of out of the box. But I'm obviously going to scale the idea down to one map & server. I will take your word for it though, as it's the only estimate I've seen so far.
if it's minimal, its pointless and detracting. if it's pointless, remove it, because you're nagging players. how the hell is adding a useless "side quest" to rp going to get players to understand what they are meant to do IN rp?
you're seriously assuming these people are either retarded or not actual cops. ding ding ding, they're neither. this is EASILY solved by enforcing tactics in game, through ACTUAL interaction as opposed to scripted tomfoolery and nonsense that merely serves to reassure the player that they know fuck all about anything they're pretending to do.
Well, let the commander place the patrol station. It could just appear as a semi-transparent blue circle on the ground or something. You have some good points about the ideal RP situation, but I think there are plenty of people out there that could use these devices and props as a crutch while learning RP. Those are the folks that I would like to attract.
why the fuck does it need to be standarized to begin with. what's even the point, what's the gain, what's the benefit other than satisfying some ocd urge about having everyone explaining themselves the exact same way. it's almost as dumb as having everyone in the server wear actual name tags.
people should be allowed to convey what they want to look like and what they want to do in any way they can within simple rules. given how both clothing and accessories are already a thing, i see absolutely no point in giving incentives for people not to use them.
Perhaps the fact that I have not seen Tiramisu in action yet is the reason I'm not following your line of thought. It's great that clothing and accessories are a thing. In what I'm picturing, there could be very defined chains of command, and you may want to quickly see what rank someone is. Perhaps that is a clothing accessory.
how about just fucking playing it instead. or, you know, not actually kill your characters every time you get shot, because otherwise the game because extremely short, unfair and fatalistic.
That is really very interesting. If I die IC, even if I respawn I usually leave the character dead.
I guess my question to you is this. Why do you use gmod rp? You seem to insist that each of the things that I've considered should be role played, instead of using the tools that are (or could be) available in the environment. With this line of thinking, where do you draw the line? Why do we even use maps? Lets just cut out everything that isn't necessary and do the RP on a forum or around a coffee table, with no flashy graphics at all.
My background is role play in text based MUSH/MUSE/MUD environments, which was back in the mid 1990's. I personally don't need some of these things, but I want an environment that caters to people that are new to role playing.
I think that when you are new, you need someone to tell you what to do a little bit. Small, tangible rewards let you know something is happening. Otherwise, it feels very awkward to /me sweeps the ground - while perhaps nobody is even there to see you. You may suggest that this is just something people need to get comfortable with, and I agree. I just want to ease that transition.

it REALLY is a conservative estimate. i have worked on gamemodes of that scope before, never seen them get done.

it's actually not didactic at all, because that's not the way you would behave IRL, by using some meta knowledge that doesn't actually exist. you would much rather teach people where to stand, when to reply, and set simple rules to how many people should respond to a threat at a single time so you don't spread your people too thin.
it adds an element of actual tactics to an actual commander.

the way of thought i've tried to implement within tiramisu is that what you see is what you get. literally your character looks like you want it to look and you don't have to go great lengths trying to describe it on a limited text field when you are essentially unlimited by details in 3d space. things that can't be conveyed through models should be expressed through text, and that's the point of titles.
That is really very interesting. If I die IC, even if I respawn I usually leave the character dead.
many people have tried to implement this in some form or the other. this comes really from the background of most prototype gmod rp servers, which is D&D and tabletop roleplaying, or Second Life. in those games the concept of having your character permanently killed is entirely optional, and you can decide the destiny of your character. what you're not allowed to do is to shrug off bullets, if you lose you always end up injured.
losing a character means having to create a new one from scratch, which is HARD to most people, unless you are mostly detached to your characters, and this affects the quality of rp.
I guess my question to you is this. Why do you use gmod rp? i'll place it in one word: immersion.
seriously, that's it. that's the whole point beyond complex characters, complex environments, camera work, non prohibiting hud, fresh vgui, clothing and accessories, is to raise the suspension of belief and get you more into the game and it's atmosphere. you try to be someone else rather than sticking to just playing a role. more into the play element than the role element, you see.
what's the point of flashy graphics, complex character models, 3d hud, camera sway, good voice acting and storylines in actual videogames? suspension of belief. why do that? because it feels nice, because it's entertaining, because it's one of the most surefire ways to entertain somebody, to make them feel like they're somewhere else. somewhere new.
My background is role play in text based MUSH/MUSE/MUD environments, which was back in the mid 1990's. I personally don't need some of these things, but I want an environment that caters to people that are new to role playing.
no you're catering to the mainstream in the same way that later megaman games tried to teach you about it's basic game mechanics. people are actually smart enough to figure out hints that you give to them, or otherwise they are weeded out quite easily. in the first megaman x game, the very first level taught you everything about the game without using a SINGLE text prompt, a single explicit hint, you just learned it to advance, later megaman x games for some reason entirely forgot about this, and started throwing prompts in your face full of information that by a general rule, you already know.
nowadays people think that to introduce players to a concept you have to grab them by the hand and guiding them through it like children. i think that's an insult to the intelligence of the average player.
I think that when you are new, you need someone to tell you what to do a little bit. Small, tangible rewards let you know something is happening. i'm not telling you to throw them into some baptism by fire, but reducing rp to a senseless grindfest is not going to help anybody. you should be teaching them that rp is a social game, it's a game about pretending not to play a game with a bunch of people, you should teach them that whatever happens in the game, stays in the game, and the people behind the characters are just that, actors. you should teach them to ease up and sink into the game, and forget it's a game, instead of constantly reminding them of what it is.
Well fuck, This got derailed fast XD
Maybe you guys should just talk in Steam or something, Just a suggestion.
As far as on-topic, You're doing awesome work! I hope to see it up and fully functional soon!

This suggestion is improtant. It's help to know news about developing.
Can't wait until this gets a stable alpha release.
Fixed the SQL, nearly done I think.
Just wanted to say what you people are doing is amazing. This gamemode is the life blood of my community, Fallen Crusaders. Without it we would not be able to run our roleplay. Can't wait for you people to finish and I really just wanted to thank you on behalf of all of those that are part of my community for all that you have done and are continuing to do.
What do you guys think about. Space Station Serious Roleplay? It's just something that popped into my mind. You can have people like working on atmospherics, and security, and space missions and all sorts.

It could work. But you'll probably want to get life support, and make a map with the atmospheres you desire.
Fixed the SQL, nearly done I think.
Both your team and fnox + matt, have been doing a great service. Looking forward to this project regardless of time it takes.
Fixed the SQL, nearly done I think.
I hope this is released soon. I've been looking for a gamemode for my servers.

I'd be interested in this. I looked at a few different maps and decided if a space ship didn't work out, something resembling a space station would be good. But it's not easy to find a map or resources that are shared under a free license. If you do want to work together, I'm trying to get some things lined up. I'm rather newbish, so about all I can contribute is server resources (learning how to set up a gmod server in linux) as well as contributing some $$ towards content development.

Love the gamemode..but fixed a few errors already. Stumble'd on these though. Any idea's?

The above picture shows one bug that i am getting. The models seem to be glitched and have other models in them etc.
Also, whenever i hit f2, or use anything in the tab menu then i get kicked with this error
[ERROR] gamemodes/liferp/gamemode/cl_skin.lua:1163: attempt to index global 'chitpos' (a nil value)
1. SkinHook - gamemodes/liferp/gamemode/cl_skin.lua:1163
2. fn - ...es/liferp/gamemode/schemas/global/plugins/hud/cl_hud.lua:49
3. unknown - addons/ulib/lua/ulib/shared/hook.lua:168
and
[ERROR] ...memode/schemas/global/plugins/inventory/cl_inventory.lua:384: attempt to index field 'InventoryFrame' (a nil value)
1. closefunc - ...memode/schemas/global/plugins/inventory/cl_inventory.lua:384
2. CloseTabs - gamemodes/liferp/gamemode/cl_init.lua:522
3. SetActiveTab - gamemodes/liferp/gamemode/cl_init.lua:529
4. DoClick - gamemodes/liferp/gamemode/cl_binds.lua:49
5. unknown - lua/vgui/dlabel.lua:206
Any idea's how to fix above errors? I am pretty sure its the most upto date version so far for gmod 13 but if someone wants me to test another copy of it then post a download link and i will run it. Thanks guys.
P.S before i get flamed by people saying, "OMG you renamed gamemode etc". I only renamed it because thats the gamemode idea we are going for. "CoastalLifeRP"

Make sure you have a clean installation of Garry's Mod. Tiramisu + Everything = Broken.
I'm firing up a linux server now. Plan to try out Tiramisu. If anyone wants to help, let me know and I can get on steam and we can chat. This is a test/dev server for now. Mostly, I'm looking for trusted members of the community (someone better vouch for you) and it is okay if you are a newbie that wants to learn a little about linux and gamemodes.
I'll set it up like so
http://maurits.tv/data/garrysmod/wiki/wiki.garrysmod.com/indexfd7a.html
For the newbies, I may let you run a little dev server to see if you can't help me break/create little things.
(i am not a lua king, just experienced with linux!)

Wait, Linux support was added?

Is that what you are waiting for? I dunno, I asked awhile ago and nobody responded.

I am waiting for a stable release. But from what I remember, Linux had problems with containers.

Is that related to the sql I wonder. You're welcomed to come help us build the space station / space ship, or just help break things so we can file some good bug reports and analysis.
The issue I have is when I first start it, the beginning animation hasn't been fixed yet. But, I'm guessing it will come in due time.

Sure, I'll help. I love breaking things.
I should be posting our version of Tiramisu tonight or sometime tomorrow. There may be a few bugs left that I haven't found. If you find a bug PM me.
