You make everything from scratch?
No wonder you hate it, anyone would get bored doing that.
Make an adv dupe of the basic generators you need to get started, then you can ignore the "tedious" things and focus on making something interesting.
All this aside though, I really like this mod, it's been fun to mess around with. Thanks Q42.
Haha no kidding...
I have a tad problem with this.
It seems that no matter where I place an object in space, it wants to go to the center of the map at (0,0,0). The only time it doesn't head to the center of the map is when it is attracted to a planet near it.
But when nothing is near it to attract it, it goes to the center of the map.
I still haven't gotten an answer for my question about the need for the objects to go to (0,0,0).
Sorry, didn't notice that post. I have some sort of an idea why that might be, but it shouldn't be doing it, but it is, so I'll fix it.
Let me get this straight. You can have gravity, but won't need Life Support since there's no damaging effects?
If so.. WOW! You sold me. I could make 2 versions of my station like this.
1 for Spacebuild, and 1 for this thing.
But does this also affect for other planets such as Jupiter with it's insanely-high gravity? Or the moon with very little gravity?
Rant:
It does not affect player gravity, because affecting player gravity is more annoying than useful IMO. I could change this if a lot of people ask.
Please do.
You could make a console command for it.
**Off Topic**
Anyone who hates Wire has obviously not taken the time to learn to use it enough to be useful. If you still can't stand it, don't install it. It's not rocket science...
I'm using Wire to try and get into orbits, it allows a level of accuracy and control well beyond what any human could possibly do. Quite frankly, I think it would be nearly impossible (or extremely difficult) to do without Wire.
**ON Topic**
Great Scot! I'm still having a hell of a time getting into orbit, granted my attempts were a little more successful but still seems to require quite a bit.
The "Competing" gravity still exists but it's not as near as bad. Has anyone gotten into a relatively stable orbit?
If so which map and planet, cause I'm just going nuts >.<
I'm interested, in what way are you using Wire to get into orbit, Fox682? :)

It would be easy with a locater at the center of the planet.
I posted a single planet request so we can REALLY have some fun with orbits, hopefully someone will pick it up and run with it.

Wire is fantastic, I use a setup for a launch platform to shove things into orbit. I can use the system to control (to an amazing degree of accuracy) how much force or speed to apply to an object, if the object actually makes an orbit I can then write down exactly the speed and altitude required for orbit.
Hydraulic or thruster based "Ram", or a Forcer. I'm going to work one more method which is a speed based system that will get you to the right speed and then shut off, it would be the most accurate system you can make.
Then I can put that info into a ships "Computer" to tell me if I need to speed up, slow down, go higher or lower in order to get into orbit. Then shut the engines off and go round and round the planet and maybe do some stuff I REALLY want to do.
Like deploy Satellites, or build a space station... the hard way!
Would also make for a very challenging combat scenario (fight AND keep in orbit), especially if you have some space junk flying around going the opposite direction whizzing by!
Or how about multiple people docking on a station while in true and stable orbit? Now THAT would be fun!
The problem is that Spacebuild maps are so stupidly full of planets, that nice stable (circular or elliptical) orbits are near freaking impossible, if not downright impossible... even with a Wire setup...
The thing is... getting into orbit is relatively easy with one planet, you can orbit at any altitude with the right speed or conversely orbit at (almost) any speed depending on your altitude. Having other planets screws things up horribly... so that you can't orbit no matter what...
Poco87 is right, we just need to either put a locater in the center OR just give us the World-based Coordinates of the center of the planet (I hope its 0,0,0). A little math can give us altitude from that.
I just hope someone finally makes it because I REALLY want to do orbit stuffs.
End of Rant.

Actually, after trying science, I've concluded that you've found a point of average gravity. The gravity in this has infinite range, so when you put it far away from a cluster of planets, their pull averages out to a single body. Same from a blank space within a planetary cluster. This results in a few "garbage dump" zones in space. In gooniverse, the strongest garbage dump is directly below the abandoned civ planet, which is nowhere near the map origin.
Remember, gravity has an inverse square falloff. That means that it has technically infinite range, and merely rounds down to zero in some places. These places are generally outside of galaxies, or at Lagrange points, which are kinda more the fault of velocities n' such. With the static bodies of spacebuild maps, Lagrange points result in the aforementioned "garbage dumps"
helpful AND not helpful! :science:
I'll update this with convars and the like sometime tomorrow. I'm going to include a SENT that detects gravity direction too, for more lol factor.
You should seriously consider adding a lack of player gravity in space and making a sort of STOOL like the gravity plates in spacebuild. It's a real pain falling all the way to the bottom and having to suicide to be able to do anything.
Looks Cool...does it support LS2 and RD2?
You missed the point, and NO, Eragon does NOT rule. :argh:

Good idea. Hope someone makes it.

Darn it! Megiddo needs to get his gamemode-thingy-project (Ulysses Universe?) working properly so we can truly walk around in orbital stations. :'(
Megiddos project is one of the holy grails of Gmod. If he ever gets it done...
For now, what we have to work with is the spacebuild gravity module and the spacebox addon (which seems to "skip" at regular intervals..). So at least the Orbiting part of it all is completely possible and with it, the fun stuff can begin!
We'll just have to suffer with launching stuff into space from "hard" gravity to the "soft" gravity of space. Having a single planet will make orbits a certainty since we would no longer have to worry about competing gravity.

???
Haven't seen it what is it?
UWorld or whatever.
It's a sphere(world) that you can walk around on and not fall anywhere except towards the center of the planet.

There we have it.
How would I make a map for this? I wanted to make a map for SB, but it was so insanely crazy I decided against it.

Look up the spacebuild one thread. it reads maps about the same way.
Look up the spacebuild one thread. it reads maps about the same way.
How does this system figure out if something is a planet? If it's the same as SB, I still might not build a map for it. I still have no clue how to set flags.
Flags? I remember no flags. It reads from logic_case entities. Case 1 should be planet, case 2 should be the radius of the planet, and case 3 is the strength of the gravity.
For spacebox, all you need are those first three cases. That makes it a bit simpler to map for, but you'll need all the other stuff in there too if you want it to work with spacebuild. But chances are you don't care about that.
Press control + t in hammer when you have the logic_case selected to open up the menu where you put this stuff in, if you didn't already know that.
Go, nagachief, go!
*cheers him on with the mapping (keeping the whip hidden behind his back)*
:D
About time we get an 'orbit-able' map. :)
Don't bother putting in fancy decoration. JUST DO IT ALREADY! :D
I'd give you a Mapping King or whatnot but the options are limited to Lua King, Lua Helper, Thanks and Agree. Why is that, by the way?

Yay! You explained it better than that shotty tutorial!
Yay! You explained it better than that shotty tutorial!
Make sure case 1 is just the word planet, too.
My brother was rather confused at why his "genericscifiplanetname IX" wasn't being read as a "planet"
Thank you! Now I need to find those prefabs from the tutorial.
Thank you! Now I need to find those prefabs from the tutorial.
Are You There Yet? :D
Don't mind me, I'm just impatient. :D
I need a bit of help, I can't figure out if you need to hallow the sphere.
I need a bit of help, I can't figure out if you need to hallow the sphere.
I believe there are two spheres involved in most planets. a func_illusory (or something) skybox, and a brush "hull" for the planet. Neither are hollowed, but to my knowledge the faces of the skybox are flipped and they are set not to collide with anything.
Also, most planets tend to have a "fence" around the perimiter to prevent junk from rolling off the sides.
lol, realism.
Hey, could you explain what the "gm_sbx_gravitydecaystep" does and how to use it? Thanks. :)
