SpaceBox, episode 1: "fly me to the fucking moon, Frank"
Actually, after trying science, I've concluded that you've found a point of average gravity. The gravity in this has infinite range, so when you put it far away from a cluster of planets, their pull averages out to a single body. Same from a blank space within a planetary cluster. This results in a few "garbage dump" zones in space. In gooniverse, the strongest garbage dump is directly below the abandoned civ planet, which is nowhere near the map origin.
Remember, gravity has an inverse square falloff. That means that it has technically infinite range, and merely rounds down to zero in some places. These places are generally outside of galaxies, or at Lagrange points, which are kinda more the fault of velocities n' such. With the static bodies of spacebuild maps, Lagrange points result in the aforementioned "garbage dumps"
helpful AND not helpful! :science:
I'll update this with convars and the like sometime tomorrow. I'm going to include a SENT that detects gravity direction too, for more lol factor.
That's cool.
I like this mod a lot, though I'll use it with SB2 and its addons.
Hey, could you explain what the "gm_sbx_gravitydecaystep" does and how to use it? Thanks. :)
gravitydecaystep is the distance over which the gravity is halved. There's a smooth gradient between them, but you can be certain that a point 1400 units farther away has half the gravity.
Ah I see. Thanks for the explanation. Might be a good idea to copy&paste that into the first post in case anyone else wonders about it. :)
Ok, I figured out the atmosphere part. Now I have another problem, I can't get the custom skybox to work.
Nag-a-chief: How's that map coming along?
I'm turning blue (was green previously) with anticipation! :v:
Hey, great job with this, Q42. People have been wanting this for a long time. Personally, I'm fine with needing LS to go out into space (I'm one of those guys that spends a few days designing a ship in SP, at least, before I take it out into space) but I'm lovin' how GCombat shells aren't gonna arc in space with this mod, once you release the latest stuff for GCombat. So, my question is, is it possible to have some sort of convar to re-enable all of the LS requirements, but keep all of your kick-ass gravity modifications? Except for player gravity...if someone were using LS, they'd have gravity plates, so no need.
Seriously, this adds so much to people's experience. I'm just the one little niche market guy who's askin' for some accomodation...if it's worth your time, great, if not, well, it's your mod, you can do what you want with it, I'll support it either way.
Note: If I sound stupid, forgive me. I haven't gotten to try this out for myself, I'm on vacation and won't be back at my comp 'til Saturday.
Thank you for this man.
Spacebuild servers get really, REALLY boring after a while. Everybody spends 3+ hours on their life support and not enough space exploration-ing!
Epic bug: Combine balls have gravity applied to them while using this.
It's a problem. It's an awesome problem, but it's still a problem.
Epic bug: Combine balls have gravity applied to them while using this.
Oh my god I have to go try this.
EDIT: That is so cool. Maybe you should consider making a script that makes the balls do this all the time, it'd be epic fun.

No, not really. :v:
Gravity in space doesn't seem to affect players
It does not affect player gravity, because affecting player gravity is more annoying than useful IMO. I could change this if a lot of people ask.
Read the OP next time.
LAG.
Christ, I had to stop playing because of that. Many a spaceship has fallen.

I found an alternate method of getting the gravity calculations. I'm going to add it, since it has the potential to speed this up quite a lot. Like, an awful lot.
Edit:
THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE.
Alright, I added that new method of deriving the gravity that I mentioned? It acts exactly the same, the accuracy of the gravity isn't compromised, but this following image was taken with 500 barrels in space with normal gravity.

Yeah, look at the net graph. practically no load! My computer was hardly slowing down at all. There are a couple more places that I can put this fix in, and it really looks no different :D
Well that build map isn't excatly straining on the computer. Have you tried it on Gooniverse?
Also, did you literally sit and count all 500 Barrels?

How soon can the rest of us impatients enjoy your 'gravity vs lag revolution'? I meant take your time but ... ah, who am I kidding! I WANT IT NOW! :v:
Also, did you literally sit and count all 500 Barrels?
You can see that in the scoreboard... :downs:
I really like the idea of this. You should keep up the good work!
BUT! I think spacebuild is still way too easy for me... I want to need resources for spawning props and so on, because it's just too easy!
But spacebox should definetaly live on, don't drop this q42
Wow, the lag from the gravity was the main issue (I almost always ended up turning it off). I cannot wait to see this new method in use!
That looks really awesome, can't wait.
Lets see
Spacebuild-LS2-RD2-lag=WINRAR!
I am sort of glad that this is added right into sandbox and that space build is not because I can have space build when I want and this when I don't.
Thanks. :)
This needs better maps as it doesn't work well on Gooniverse.
I really like it. I originally loved the spacebuild idea, but the amount of time spent making ships that can survive in space only to have a huge crashy lag fest the minute a fight begins really put me off, however, this is great!
Good work on Gcombat, also :D
Idea: Make players move the direction they point in space when they hit the forward button, and make player-gravity-affection a CVAR. I like my zero-gee :C

Couldn't agree more. I like having no gravity applied to me while I'm in space :(.
Any word on the new addition?
Hi. Sorry for being a noob but i can't get this to work or I'm completely missing the point. I put the spacebox folder into addons folder and load up sb_gooniverse with sandbox. When i spawn something in space it just drops to the bottom of the map. Don't see any kind of gravity or anything. I have Spacebuild and life support installed. Do I need to uninstall this?
Again sorry for being annoying I just want this to work. It sounds brilliant.
one47master: Interesting. If you've unpacked it correctly you should have a folder called SpaceBox in your addons folder. Correct? Also, check that you've unpacked it WITH folders so you have all the subfolders included.
Also, to check if the addon is functioning/installed; play singleplayer (any map with Sandbox mode), open console and check (use Find command) if commands gm_sbx_gravitydecaystep and gm_sbx_gravitypull exist. If they do (executing either command will NOT result in "Unknown command" error) you _should_ have the gravity (as spacebox is ON by default, I think).
Do you have any other gravity addons installed? If so, they might interfere with spacebox. I suggest you delete or move them off the addons folder just in case.
Hope these help. :)
