its not hard to make a cave, I did a small one in like 10 mins, but the one from episode 2 would be harder. If you guys want me to I could make a tunnel/grass map, but you just need to give me ideas for the tunnel, like main chamber, food holding area, etc. and similar things for the grass area for the headcrabs.
I also suggest making the headcrabs and antlions walk around(which has probably already been suggested), and not just sit until they need to eat or attack something. Another idea for antlions is have a storage area for them, make a entity that tells them to gather food and bring it to the entity for storage of sorts, and when they get hungry they will just go to the entity to find food. just some suggestions.
also, do you don't need EP2 to make EP2 caves, probably just the textures is all that is needed, which I can easily substitute with something else.
you do need ep 2 to know what those caves look like, i'd attemt to make some if i could see them

to know what they look like yes, but to make a basic tunnel, all you need is displacement walls, and then subdivide it to make a cave like area, however larger areas seem to get problems with terrain spiking out in random directions. you also need a better processor than mine to handle a large area(which a lot of people probably have), took me 20 mins to subdivide an area with a bridge, 2 small dead end tunnels, and a 50 ft drop on a 2.1 GHz processor.

YES i did edit this from a previous post, the lower one was seen by me first, so i edited it first.
OMG last nite i had so many ideas! (i always do for uber mods like this) if u want to hear them message me on steam my id is same as my facepunch. some examples of these ideas are:
*New types of fruit
*Specialised npc AI
*Specified Colonies maps
*Some changed models of plants, to the more common games eg: CS:S, HL2.
I have more ideas but you gotta interrogate me for 'em.

2 new fruits from css: orange and bannana
new plant model: CSS Fern
new factions fix: eggs dont ALWAYS make default faction crab/antlion, but spawn to the faction it came from.
personal npc's: npc's dont need nodes to walk (maybe?)
attack system: sometimes a headcrab/antlion troop will move towards an enemyalso, things cant lay eggs with enemies around.
ill have to stop here. watch for others in a few days, i must leave for melton.

he way be working on fixing the factions problems, and perhaps the plant model problem too, like he mensioned earlier in the thread, a few weeks/months ago.

How about having "breeders", they are organic (or maybe some kind of machine?) that constantly lays eggs. But does not move around like the others. If its you make it organic, make other headcrabs / antlions be "assigned" to defend and feed it.
Also, make that they move around more. I mean, on good noded maps they do move, but just a bit, and mostly only to search food. Make them go around alot when theyre not hungry.
Also, another idea is to make them interact with eachother, like to headcrabs encounter head to head, and they make that... "giggling" sound thing they do sometimes. like if they would be saying hi.

Not really. Its not destructable, and lays eggs when the population goes to low.
Just so you dont have to constantly make eggs when the antlions extinct the headcrabs.
I wonder one thing, why not have male and female antlions/headcrabs? Male wander around fighting while female lay eggs?

Yeah seems kinda stupid, no matter how many watermelons plants you add in a colony, someone is ALWAYS AND ALWAYS going to die of starvation.
