Tesselation? No, because it's not supported on dx9 thus on older gpu's.

YOu cant bake normals off this model ;) (atleast no good ones)
Like said the edges are way to sharp, just some basics about SUBD modeling:
1. Poly count doesn't matter what does are the edges, how smoother the better "http://sleekupload.com/uploads/5/allhailsmoothedges_1.png"
2. Don't go with 90° angles ray trace won't catch these angles it's better to use a 84,86,88° angle
3. Use support edges with wide angles and turbo smooth it to eventually get your smooth edges!

What you mostly made won't be proper ray traced as it won't catch anything on those angles, the edges are just to hard to have any smoothing for the Normal Map to take effect.

Well that's quite unfortunate I do would love to see a decent SubD'd Stargate getting in to gmod, though Could you upload a screenshot of the wireframe please? I do wonder how you got that much poly's though without much use of turbo smooth sort to seem.

Because I've modelled all details. I didn't know that SubD mean "turbosmoth every edges even if they are not smoth". SubD sucks.
You can do yourself stargate subd model. It's not hard to make overal gate shape (even taken from old one) and just apply turbo smooth modifier to it.

Yea in short you can say that even if edges aren't smooth they should be on the HP and in these times people prefer way smoother edges than before :p

Not everybody has dx11 card. Most of ppl sits on dx10 (gt9800, gts8800 etc).
