I'd like to see a system that enables the superseding of noncritical data in a client's data – less ambiguously put; the selective "forgetting" of data not permitted by the server's own "reference sheet" would be automatically completed before the client is able to play.
With a clear and concise autoparsing system of some sort, every server would automatically produce its own "inhibitor file" on start-up to tell the client's computer what data to permit – anything that fails to fall within this file's rule list.
EDIT: Well, I'd assumed I was an idiot, Lexic, and that this already existed; but because I didn't see any example of this in use as a STANDARD element in all servers, I thought perhaps I should say something. Thank you for proving me wrong.
I think what he's saying is he wants you to sandbox Gmod's memory?
but clientside cheat protection always fails D:
it's on the Client so they can tamper with it at their leisure
(for examples of how this does no good, see ScriptEnforcer)
If we had access to some of the funky content streaming stuff, that would be great too. Maybe adding a library for streamed media specifically? I would love to have things like audio being able to be streamed instead of having to be previously downloaded.
Music Players destroy all gamemodes that require user interaction, because the server owners shitty techno (as opposed to something good, like DubStep) is on, so you can't hear over it, and you can pause it but when the next song starts it just turns itself back on

Uhh...It's just as easy as adding all option to ignore all streamed media, you won't have to hear assorted electronic music then because you won't be hearing anything at all.
well, then there's a problem because I want to hear microphones
TTT example:
"Show me your primary, that guy was killed with an AK47"
"WHAT? I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE DJ"
streaming audio just doesn't sound useful, if I wanted music I'd alt+tab and turn on Windows Media Player
How about some gamemode base with a "gamemaster" selected at random and the players. The game master seeing the map vertically or through cameras and being able to spawn weapons, npcs and props. This could be used for battles, zombie fights, roleplay and dungeons and dragons :)

You are not getting it.
Only the MUSIC will disabled, STREAMED AUDIO, not the voice, which uses different stuff to begin with. With streamed audio you wouldn't just have music, that's one of it's applications, you could have location based audio cues, like for example, a literal radio on the world, or a DJ that emits sound only on one particular location.
All the stuff you're saying is related to implementation, and not only that but the worst possible implementation of it. It just doesn't work that way.
Some RP gamemodes would be great.
Some RP gamemodes would be great.
We don't need any new RP gamemodes right now. There's Clockwork (Coming soon I think), Tiramisu 2 and Vein (GMod 13). Also, this thread is for suggesting how garry can make gamemodes in general better.
There should probably be a Story Mode About you being the life of a Citizen,Combine,Civil Protection etc, ( Not referring to HL2RP or that) And, Depending on what playermodel you are, You can talk (Like HL2RP Civil protection, Combine) That would be cool.
As for the gamemodes, HL2RP Schema looks a bit too pricy. Garry could probably make what i was thinking about the storyline.

lol.................................................
Life of a Citizen, etc. = Half Life 2 Roleplay
Roleplay refers to playing the role of something (possibly different), hence the life also being the roleplay. It's like talking about playing the life of Spartans and the Covenant without referring to Halo. HL2RP mainly refers to a common schema. If you want a schema for free, get Tiramisu 2.
Plus, you contradicted yourself slightly at the end. :yarr:
It was just a suggestion....... God, why do you people hate all the time -_-
It was just a suggestion....... God, why do you people hate all the time -_-
because you just suggested hl2rp and said you didn't want hl2rp (even though there are gamemodes other than conna's latest update)
This isn't "What gamemodes can I make for you", this is "How can I make it easier/better for people to make/maintain gamemodes".
If you're not a gamemode developer then it's very unlikely that this thread is the thread for you.

I think Garry is talking more about how to improve the development of gamemodes and the control of the gamemode for the end-user.

Garry does not control HL2RP schemas nor does he have control over their prices.
Just a question.... Bleh bleh bleh

Stop being an imbecile in this thread before Garry locks it. (and bans both of you.)
Edit:
Wow, I can predict the future!
someone should up the max map size from a short int to a regular int, because it's not 2004 anymore
and even so, the rest of quake-based games don't have this annoying restriction
that would be a nice addition, assuming everyone doesn't max the map size and forget about visleafs and the likes

This is an engine issue. It'd need a new version of the source engine.
There's more stuff involved than just changing data types. For example, networking positions for any entity would take twice as much data to perform, if we were to use 4 bytes instead of 2 for every coordinate. It's not a simple change.

792 bytes/second really isn't that bad though (those updates are done every tick right?)
*inb4 someone wants boxes, there's 3-axis' being updated*
Make a whole new MySQL from scratch
Downloading content from servers running gamemodes and addons could be more streamlined.
For instance I could connect to a server that has 1000+ files. Garry's Mod confirms the connection to the server and starts downloading content but leaves me at the menu to play single player while the content downloads in the background like Toybox.
Maybe even link the Steam Workshop to servers in some way. IE, subscribe or auto subscribe on connect to X server's content. At a minimum send us gamemode info/amount of content I need to download to the server browser if GWEN is implemented.
Make it so we can see the progress on each individual file and how many more of each type of file there is to download.
Also, make it so we can see the overall progress of the download at the same time as the progress on each individual file.
(The way it works now is really confusing. Sometimes it shows the overall progress and sometimes it's each individual file. It's hard to tell which of the two is happening if the first file is a map.)
(We used to have this why did it go away)

It shows the overall progress if the server is using a FastDL, but individual progress if not.
It shows the overall progress if the server is using a FastDL, but individual progress if not.
But you don't know if the server has a fastDL or not unless it tells you?
It should really just tell you both.
Yeah, content downloading is possibly the most frustrating part of gmod gamemodes. There should be more methods to send content to the user, as well as more info to the user on loading screens. Some servers have half-hour wait times, which is fine if you join once, but it gets pretty frustrating after a while, especially when their FastDL is misconfigured and you end up downloading the same 100 files over and over again.
I think the biggest thing is that lua caches need to be put on FastDL. I know this has been suggested multiple times, but I'm not sure why this hasn't been addressed - it's probably the best idea I've heard in a very long time...the cache should download from the server, regardless of FastDL being enabled
