I really think it's over-populated because you make it WAY too easy for people to start up a server, and therefor any 12 year old with an allowance will do such.
I mean, sure, there should be an easy way to add things, just not 1 line functions to make every single server generic

So you're saying it should be easy to add things, but not too easy, because if it's too easy the twelve-year-olds will be able to set up a server?
Come on, are you honestly criticizing me for making it too easy to set things up? The servers aren't that generic anyway. Most servers have unique sets of jobs, shipments and addons running. You'd have to consider the whole customization of these three things as generic in order to call DarkRP servers generic.
I've never heard anyone say that about sandbox, and sandbox has always been more popular than DarkRP. There are plenty other gamemodes, especially with fretta gamemodes.
Besides, I'm not going to tell people to stop using DarkRP because it's so popular. DarkRP being popular is not a problem I would want to fix.
EDIT:
I've cleaned up the serverside globals (I've yet to do the clientside ones)

Sandbox has to be popular because gmod is a sandbox game not DarkRP game so I agree with Banana Lord on this one.

DarkRP has sandbox elements as well. A gamemode shouldn't be harder just to avoid 12 year olds can't make a server. If you don't want to play on a 12 year old's DarkRP, then don't.

I'd say there's a good chance 2/3 of the DarkRP servers use the game gun pack with similar prices and similar jobs with of course, DurgzMod. Everything is extremely generic and you made the base of the gamemode extremely simple to minge/fuck up others gameplay with (literally join, /gundealer, buy a gun, and shoot everyone).

So why not doing a system to prevent this? Like you have to play as citizen for 2h to get gundealer. Or what's with systems to stop unrp pple, like useless shooting with glock as police gives you something like a -1 point. 1 ooc message per 1min, ... My Ideas are crap, just bring back RP into DarkRp. It's impossible to let the players do that, thats why we have so much problems with darkrp so use other forces to bring rp back.
Sorry for bad english ;)

Don't limit people with RP. RP should be open. The problem is with people, not the gamemode, and with strong administration, you can make a good DarkRP server.

Exactly what I said.
Yeah the idea with the administration is better than mine.^^ But try to get 10 24/7 hardcore rp Admins...

No, I said "It's stupid to limit people to what they can roleplay. Let it be open, and administrate well."
I think Fptje is making a good effort to improve the code of darkrp, if darkrp is going to exist at least if it's update it wont be as bad! I have to say though, one thing that pisses me off the most is the combination of small maps like downtown with dark rp. Dark rp is decent to fuck about in but holy shit downtown makes my eyes bleed, I mean I probably couldn't do better but, I wish someone just made a replacement to replace that map.

I think the problem is that relying on administration doesn't work.
It's very rare that mods/admins can be on at all times to keep order, and many of the cases they're just as retarded as most players.
I think the solution is still to have game mechanics that encourages players to play serious.
Like making it easier to be demoted when you're mayor/civil protection and not doing your job, like not being able to spawn shipments instantly and work as a moving armory as a gundealer, like not being able to easily spawn a moneyprinter and rely on it to make you rich while you fuck around not doing your job.

That map is popular because it's very good for darkRP though. It's small enough that it's easy to navigate around and memorize routes, but large enough that there's plenty of places to have a hideout, shops, or an apartment. It's small enough to get around easily, but large enough that there's plenty of scattered around places to make your home.
People like DarkRP on Downtown because DarkRP simply works very well on that map, both when you play serious and unserious.
I wouldn't mind some variation, but not many people have made maps that work so well with DarkRP.
Many SWEP-based actions can be attached to zoom key, e.g.
when looking at door/vehicle - lock/unlock / hold key for buying/selling
----------------- other players vehicle/door - knock / hold key for lockpicking (as mob boss) / hold key fo bashing it with ram (as cop)
----------------- cop - request gun license
----------------- other player, while playing as cop - make him wanted / hold key for arrersting/unarresting him
And others!
No longer switching 9000 times between tons of sweps, just one key!
Also there is a gread module for DarkRP made by Banana Lord, called Properties. IMHO it deserves to be in vanilla gamemode.

I reckon something like that would be pretty hard to script though, to make the same weapon function differently between classes.
Just a guess though, I don't know much about LUA.

With functions, returning eye trace and current team it's not hard to code.

that properties module that I made is REALLY REALLY bad, I need to find the time to re-make it. I just have no motivation since my server wouldn't make use of it :(

Great quote for use outside its context. This shows that quotes outside of context can make anyone look bad.
I was having a prop fight in a desolate area of the map with someone who agreed to fight with me. I had permission from the admin. I won the battle, so I mocked him by saying how many deaths he had. After a while we stopped and continued RPing.
FPtje is kind of a dick
Just saying
If you all blame downtown, how about you get other maps popular?

Truthfully that map still looks a lot like downtown, the screenshots are near enough of the same areas.

Well if you look at rp_bangclaw its pretty popular. Its a giant great map fit for a good community (and cars). Its just that the server owners refuse to let go of a small, isolated map like downtown. Or an outdated, and not so good looking map like evocity.

Actually, Evocity2 is a pretty good map. Just the fact that it's a huge map, in memory and size requirements, is what I think keeps it from being popular.

Instead of judging it from 3 pictures, how about you go and play it you mapping genious

Maybe I did play it. How do you know?
I wasn't talking to you, forgot to quote him
actually i did try rp_bangclaw
its very big, has a HUGE underground complex and a cool desert town outside the main city. Great roads for cars.
and i did not mean evocity2. i meant evocity_v2d
I was talking to grommito0th
could have said that instead of "him"
I was talking to grommito0th
Well I did play it, I can say yes it was better than Down-town, but only marginally in my opinion, the areas were far too enclosed with nowhere to run to, no alleyways to escape down, it was all clear cut along the road, there was no deviating from the road. I like the fact that the buildings on the inside were more detailed but a lot of the general layout of the town felt cramped and I can tell it would feel even more cramped on a 24 man RP server with cars. I mean, there's nowhere to really go! It's small!
Would it be possible to divide criminal professions into an optional subcategory?
First you choose a real legal profession (or unemployed/hobo), this will be what you work as and what other players see as your profession.
Then you choose what you do if you're criminal (or if you're completely lawful), and you get the benefits of those jobs as well.
It's a bit boring that you can instantly tell by looking at someones player model and know if they're likely to be a criminal, and players with the criminal professions have nothing better to do than constantly spend their time with other criminals. If if would be possible to both do a normal job and be a criminal, players will have much more to do since they can use their job as a cover for what they do criminally, they'll get to interract more with other players since they aren't just full time criminal that everyone avoids anymore, and everyone can now be a suspect of a crime. It's more realistic, and it's more fun.
This way, the mob could also work as per invitation rather than by selecting your class a mobster.
If the mobboss worked as a class that could invite other players to set their criminal status as "mobster", it would work a lot more like real gangs.
While that sounds like a good idea, it changes the very basis of DarkRP. It would change it so much that I doubt many people will like it.
Usually when I see people with such ideas in popular threads, entire discussions arise with people for and against it.
Besides, this change would necessarily change shared.lua, which its something I want to avoid doing at all cost.
