Gamemode Coding Contest - Now with added organisation!

We've done a lot of these things in the past with similar results. When garry ran the contests, he would post a front page announcement. Not much I can do about that.
The problem is we get a lot of people who say they're going to enter, but then don't because they either forget or stop developing because they don't think it's good enough. I liked the past contests where we had a bunch of half-assed gamemodes with lots of potential that continued development after the contest. I haven't seen that in quite some time.
Wouldn't hurt to post in the Lua section next time. I think we've had decent exposure, there's just not enough people interested.

That is why I suggested predetermined gamemodes or "Improve on" gamemodes. The problem with the actual model is that people comes by and look at the theme telling themselves: "Shit I got this nice idea for the gamemode I'll code it and submit it". Unfortunatly for them, once they've coded their awesome idea, they realize they have to code the entire gamemode to suit it and thus they lose motivation.
Here's my idea: Give either a skeleton gamemode or a basic gamemode to reproduce and then ask the contestants to twist it following a given theme. Also, it will probably give the contestants a better sense of competition as everyone's idea could aswell be in someone else's gameplay.
Well this is disappointing.. This needed more exposure then just the gamemode dev section..
This is what we need really. As said later on prep-haps get support from Garry, even if he just posts it seeing as no offence to people but if garry posts something everyone just posts back (i.e. follow him)
Also I'm back xd.
Another possible idea that could be done is that instead of making lots of gamemodes, the community could vote on the most needed script, which encompasses everything lua related and then the community would have to compete and try to make the best version. This way these competitions would be more somewhat useful and contribute more to Garry's Mod as a whole. Not to insult people that make gamemodes for these competitions as lots of them are very good, but I just feel that more worthwhile contributions could be made by making other things as well.
Regardless of the theme some people always complain that they can't think of ideas for it, can't help that. If you have any better ones please do share, we want to make it fun for as many people as possible!
I've found all themes, except this one, quite good.
It's just that crime has been used for so many gamemodes that there really isn't a whole lot more to do with it.
I'm fully aware how difficult it is to come up with a nice theme that pleases everyone, but a suggestion would be to choose a theme which has a wider range of ideas.
For example the energy theme gave you a basic idea, but still there was so much left to make your gamemode completely unique.
Doing gamemodes based on theme is a bit "blah", almost any type of cut and paste gamemode can be given a theme with a little work.
I think GCC's should be based on genre or specific challenges of features to have in the gamemode.

You might be happy with what Greasemonkey's may be coming up with for the next challenge then.
I'm thinking I'll start the next contest in mid November. We can get things rolling sooner if there's a higher demand. I'm descending into the heat of my semester right now with the possibility of a seasonal contract job starting next week (really excited) so yeah.

I know it maybe a big ask but would it be possible to get Garry to just comment on it or something to get the mass followers coming ^.^
It's a real shame that not more people joined, really. I wasn't even aware of this contest, otherwise I would probably have entered.
Although, wouldn't it be more fun to skip the entire theme idea all together for at least one contest? Just tell people to code a simple and fun gamemode with any theme they can think of, and let the best one win.

Nothing prevents you from asking yourself. I guess the more people that ask garry the better.

I would of joined if i wasn't spending excessive time on a gamemode that doesn't fit the theme ):
I would have joined if it was within my powers to ever finish a project.
But it is not possible for me to do such a thing.
People have work and school, a contest during a holiday break would improve entry numbers.
You can submit news to it too. I’m going to start posting community news to the main site again. I had hoped that a community site would pop up that did that stuff - but no one really ever stepped up to the plate.
This is what we have been waiting for! Perfect for announcing the next one.
Maybe the contest should be 2 months long? This way people who have school/work will still have plenty of free time to work on it, and people who don't notice the contest until a week or two into it, wont feel like they missed half of the contest's time.

We've done this sort of thing before. Here's what happens. People who get started early get a little done and then procrastinate. The people who start a week or two into it believe they don't have a chance because of everyone who had a head start and lose motivation. The rest get bored. This is why I generally discourage contest extensions.
Not to say this is always the case, but that's what I've observed from past contests.
I'd be keen to enter, problem for me, is I started working on my gamemode before the start date.
gamemode @ last update ->http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1089200?p=32810467&viewfull=1#post32810467
How about a suggestion. Instead of a theme as such, a style? Such as top down (Birds Eye View), 3rd person, Retro, ect.
And sounds like the date planned for the next comp wont be any good for me. Ill be away for most of November, and will be pretty busy.
Edit: Another idea that I'm SURE would entice more entries. Con Garry into giving Beta Keys to all decent entries.
(IDK when the beta finishes. But I'm sure that would entice more people to do it. Hell, would make me just so I could test the Gamemode I'M already working on. )
