Can this be mouse-aimed? And by that I mean wired to the X, Y and Z from a Pod Controller and used from a seat.
Sadly, not. I'd like it to do that, but it's a rather complex task at the moment. TetaBonita made something like that a while ago though (mouse aiming, not the wiring part).
I'm not going to support Wire. It crashes my GMod and, last I remember, eats up loads of resources and menus for no good reason.
Because this could be mounted on a vehicle and then it would be decisively AWESOME.
You can do that. Well, bar aiming bit.

Yeah, it's fun to put it on a vehicle and drive around with it. The video was originally going to be me driving through a zombie horde with a turret on the car, but it was hard to show what it does that way.
Plasma shots do damage in radius (and ignite wooden props), so they're generally more effective against crowds or complicated contraptions or shields. They also impair player's hearing for a second on direct hit.
That's pretty good. Coincidentally, I thought of including shotgun and sniper modes off the bat, but I'm still not sure how to balance them out. Can't promise I'll ever actually get to it, I'm relatively busy with being lazy.
Last time I downloaded this when I told it to target props it targeted my moving props as well as the enemies. Is there any way to toggle this? Because I'm trying to use it as an automated turret on my spaceships...
Mine didn't work, I installed it and there wasn't a change. lemmy try again
That's not right at all. Not sure what could possibly be causing it, unless you mean it does that when being welded to something else (and this something is moving). Which I'm not sure how to fix.
It happens when I freeze it.

Good to know. I never really intended it to be used that way.

It won't attack anything it's constrained to (you need to activate/deactivate it for it to re-query constraints).

Did you have a previous version installed?
It happens when I freeze it.
Do you have any custom models installed? Any big addons? Legit GMod?
Looks cool, got my download.
Legit GMod, and huge addons, yeah.
Also custom models.
Oh, okay. I see why it was turning sideways. I have a custom model for the AR2.

Yep. The only thing I can think of that that could be causing things like that.
how about kill crediting?

Hmm... Doesn't seem to work when I use smart weld. which is all I use ;)
I'll try it with just normal welding... Ya it works when I do it with normal welding, can anyone confirm this?
Or maybe I just have an older version? (of smartweld or auto turret.)
You should have a laser fire mode to go with it.

Well that would be rather unfair, wouldn't it?

Weird. Does Smartweld use something other than normal weld constraint by any chance?

Maybe later.

You mean as point defense (fires at everything that gets close, not at a specific target)? Then you should be better off with -orb-'s turret. At least you can tell that to ignore your stuff.

Do you have a link?

Ya that's exactly what I'm looking for, something like warmelons automated weapons, but without the need to manualy set targets and teams...
Do you have a link for orb's turret?
Oh I think your talking about that tutorial on how to make a wire turret. Sorry but I hate wire, I think it's a bit clunky and overcomplicated, and I often get wired related crashes.
COOL, I'LL TRY IT NOW! sry caps lock
nice thx for this ^_^
If it's a STool, could you make options like:
-Target Owner
-Target Good NPC's (Rebels, citizens, Alyx...)
-Target Monsters (Zombie's, Antlion's...)
-Target Bad Guys (Metro Police...)
And:
-Turn on/off key
-Speed of targetting (how fast the turret turns)
-Speed of shooting
-Damage by the turret
I'm not sure if you have any of these options, because I didn't download it (I don't download anything because I play on SP very rarely).

I might in the future versions, if I figure any of this out. Other than that, there's already a damage/distance slider, and making it not target the owner would be a bit of a proverbial godmode.

That's where the damage distance slider comes in. Besides you could always make it admin only...

I know, it seems weird, not being able to customise something to it's full potential in GMod - but restrictions are what make the gameplay, and gameplay is what makes things fun.
What would you prefer, an ordinary pistol, or a gun that kills everything on the map in one click? The latter sure sounds a lot more fun, but it can and will get boring after literally a few clicks. Coincidentally, STurret is exactly this type of gun.

I don't know - I think you have the wrong impression of "restrictions." You're right in the sense that the different rules, what you can and can not do, and so on is what makes a particular gamemode (or game) fun. However, these restrictions are set globally over a given game type, not on specific weapons or other items used WITHIN the game - how can you set restrictions upon an item that could be used in any conceivable way in any of a limitless number of game types, even those not yet developed?
For instance, take the lowly pistol. In its standard incarnation, for use against zombies and combine and whatever, it's not exactly super-powered, particularly given that many enemies have much more powerful weapons. If you were to take that same pistol and move it into a game where you are fighting mobs with 1 hit point each, then all of a sudden it becomes godlike. Does that mean the pistol is overpowered? No, it is just not right for that given setting.
I think the point is that it is impossible for any stool or addon author to know what uses people are eventually going to find for their creations - this is, of course, the whole point of modding and of things like GMOD, which wouldn't even exist if people hadn't taken things that were meant to work one way in a certain situation and twisted them into a million others. This is precisely why GMOD is designed with so many different esoteric tools and settings that can be changed to accommodate any situation - if Garry decided that allowing God Mode is overpowered, for instance, and somehow restricted the option for everyone, that would deny a whole segment of what is possible and what can be achieved.
So this, I think, is why it is always better to have the absolute maximum degree of flexibility and customization available within any tool or item meant for use in GMOD, so that is will eventually be used not just for the few things that you CAN think of, but the tons of ones that you can not.
You've been creative, innovative, and intelligent enough to come up with something that people are interested in - and, as the posts in this message have revealed, it has only taken a short while for them to ALREADY come up with usage types that you did not consider. I can understand you not having the time or even drive to want to make more changes, but I wouldn't reject it because you are worried about a few situations where your STool might not be used in the exact way you imagined it.

Well, you're right.
It's not the best way to do things, but it is a lot better than allowing players to put a single turret on the map that will deal with whatever in one shot from any distance - if you make it do that, you'll soon get tired of it, if you make it less powerful, you'll feel like you're missing out. In fact, that's what happens to normal gmod turrets.
It really is a tricky balance, because you're ultimately limited by the PC capabilities rather than the game - there's only that much barrels you can spawn, only so much NPCs, only so much welds, and only so big of a map - and for most, it's already two inches away from the proverbial ceiling. This only becomes more obvious in Multiplayer, when players will max out whatever settings they can to beat the opposition. It's tricky, and my solution is far from the greats - I just thought it'd be more fun this way, with no way to find out for sure.
To bring an analogy, there's a reason Resource Distribution is so popular when all it does is make you do a bunch of redundant things to even survive: it's fun.
PS: It's not popular or remotely great. The thing just accidentally slipped onto gmod.org's frontpage for a while.
This looks awesome <3 thanks for posting it!
Edit:
Aww it does not shoot when i use it :( does anyone els have this problem? i still <3 you tho Citizen 101 lol :)
Hey, I downloaded this today and I used the auto turret in single player, but when I saved my creation and opened it in my multiplayer server it said I reached the auto turret max. which i'm guessing is two, as two didn't show up on my creation, and i have 4.
What is the setting to change the max?
I tried sturret_type but it didn't seem to work.
can you help me out?
What is the setting to change the max?
It's sbox_maxsturrets. Also, server needs to have the addon installed on it's end if you want to use it there to begin with.

You're welcome.

Uh... This addon.
lol i have it, i just had to double check. thanks :) nice job.
