I'm thinking that the thing that's making the explosions look pasted on is that the edges are just too sharp. The only problem is that I can't really think of a good way for you to remedy the issue. Perhaps if you added a very slightly blurred layer of glow to the explosion, making a very small border of glow, before you add the thicker glow, it could help to cover up those sharp edges.

I'm not sure if it will work or not, I'm just making a suggestion.
