MMMMh this is a tasty burger
That's a hotdog you prat.
:siren::siren:ZP'S ENGINE POWERED HOTDOG:siren::siren:
That would be sex.
Being the only one NOT banned in this tread I will post someone elses engine. This is the oldest video of an engine I can find And if you want to see an engine working instead of sitting still. http://www.setvid.com/play.php?vid=3106
F12 notice how the engine does nothing apart from go up and down?
F12 notice how the engine does nothing apart from go up and down?
Second Video.
"What I'm saying is do NOT post a plate with wire attached to it and say its god’s gift to the world" As Erkle himself has said, the point of Wiremod is that you can have a contraption that does something cool, even if it doesn't look cool. I don't see anything wrong with posting Wiremod contraptions on this forum (even if it IS just a plate with wire on it), as long as you put a video or something showing the cool thing it does
Yeah, if a wire thingimajig is to be posted, it should do something unique, and in a good way. I've seen a decrease in the number of wire engines, lately. I wonder what's happening with them.
I've seen a decrease in the number of wire engines, lately. I wonder what's happening with them.
I will post one tomorrow. I was challenged to beat The.Yields speed record for an engine powered vehicle. I had done 60 MPH months ago.. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3398277691863196659 then he did 67 in this vid http://www.vimeo.com/915160 So he raised the bar and I spent all night preparing to beat him. Then I did. 79.012 MPH. So Yeah! Engines are back baby! http://www.vimeo.com/1339391 Oh I spent over an hour trying to get to 80 MPH.. No beans.
If they're unwritten why did you post it? I'm on borderline whether to keep this sticky or not; If it was valid and helpful, it would remain active regardless.
Now that the Cranky ass Mamba is out of this thread and it's calmed down i think it should stay, it gives people wanting to post things like Legox did an example of what to look out for...or whatever. Anyways yeah, leave it a sticky :D
I think this thread is incredibly useful...if people read it before posting their garbage. :silent:
True Kronos, But some projects have to use an PHX Road at least, to make it less lag.But everything else should be vanilla props.
I have noticed in the past year that the overall quality of contraptions has declined severally. It seems some people think if they make ANYTHING, that it should be posted. This is a section that you post something to brag about, or to show off and frankly a few PHX plates welded together is not something to brag about. Contraptions should show signs of quality and effort and be loaded with detail or something unique. Now, I'm not just going to rant about how this section has degraded but, I'm going to tell you how to possibly restore it. Restoring the contraptions section would not be that hard... well for some it might , but for the most part it would be easy. There are a few simple steps to increase you contraptions "Awesome" factor and give you more gold stars. PhoeniX - I know what you’re going to say "PhoeniX is a very useful addon, it can be used when normal props do not fit..." but that’s the fun of building, finding a prop that fits that ISN'T a custom prop. Not to mention a contraption made entirely out of PhoeniX is ugly as hell. However there is a place for PhoeniX. PhoeniX is -in my opinion- very useful for precision work, such as an engine, a clock, or anything that requires gears and train wheels. A general rule of thumb, try to avoid custom models. Wire - Wire can enhance a contraption ALOT... but you need a contraption to enhance. What I'm saying is do NOT post a plate with wire attached to it and say its god’s gift to the world. Instead take the extra time to make a contraption that compliments the wire accessories. BUT! If you use wire please set wire width to 0 unless you are going to route the wires along the contraption with right click. If you do have a wire heavy device, post it here http://www.wiremod.com/forum/contraptions-saves/, they made a forum for a reason you know. Thrusters and Hoverballs - contrary to popular belief these can work in small numbers. Since hoverballs and thrusters use a power to weight ratio, increasing their weight will increase the power. So instead of using 10X the amount of thrusters... use 10X the weight (on the thruster...)! This will decrease lag and increase the efficiency of your contraption. Also, the color tool's alpha setting is your friend. A contraption covered in blue glowy balls and random thrusters never looks good. When you have finished your contraption, take the few minutes to make all the thrusters and hoverballs invisible. A few random tips: - USE SHIFT + E! Using this nifty little combo will not only straighten the prop your holding to a 45 degree angle, but it will improve the overall look of your contraption. - Not too many welds. Welding everything to everything generally won't improve the strength, but it will increase the lag. Instead weld everything to the props that are very heavy and in the centre. Then attach thrusters, hoverballs, wheels etc, to that heavy prop. - Never say never to no-collide. In my experience you can never no-collide to much. Yes this somewhat contradicts my weld statement... but it beats a tornado of props that used to be that nice contraption you were testing out. - SEnts, few and far between. SEnts can really help your contraption out, whether it is life support for a space ship or the shuttle for a fighter. Although... posting a few fences and a life support monstrosity in the centre won't get you good reviews. So use some SEnts... just don't use JUST SEnts. - QUALITY OVER QUANTITY. Instead of making the "PhoeniX mobile version 16" try making an intricate / complicated contraption out of vanilla props. It can be more challenging at times but it’s better than a PHX box with wheels. I do realize this does not apply to everyone, many contraptions that have recently come have shown lots of time and effort. Also if anyone has any tips that I may have forgotten feel free to share them. Well I think that about wraps up my thoughts on this subject so i will give the floor to TomB332 to share his thoughts as well.
Revering to your first post :s I dont agree i think that you should use phx mod because it give a better effect and makes it look like it was made professionaly. Edit: But all of the others are good advice ;) ill try that.
Any advice on making tanks?
Make a heavy wheel base out of 3-4 props. Attach all other props and the wheels to the those 3-4. That is how I build my tanks.
What props you mostly use.Beside lockers.
Mostly anything that fits and looks the part. I tend to use a fridge (the big silver one) for the back and filing cabinets for edges and such.
I think your statement on "Never say no to no-collide" should be amended. You should always say no to no-collide. No-collide counts as a constraint and as all other constraints; it adds to server lag. I'd even go as far as saying that no-collide is more laggy than welding. People should be using no-collide all instead of no-collide. No-collide all does not count as a constraint, but provides the same results. Use no-collide all on props that you are clipping into others, and keep the non no-collided props running the main of the contraption so it still remains physical.
That is a good point. But to amend your statement. No-Collide-All is a stool that is the constraint DEVIL! You want "Right Click No-Collide" or No-Collide To All.
Haha, yes, mybad
Once I got lazy and right clicked "no collide all" on a whole floor section and ended up falling through it, that should be fixed, players should not be able to go through no collide all props
Indeed :sax:
I just have a few tips; Don't use auto welders such as Smart Welder. They can lag the hell out of your contraptions. Avoid No Collide but only use it when it's REALLY necessary. No Collides, like Welds are all constraints. The more constraints... the more studdering/lag. Don't listen to PHX/Tiled haters. If you want something simply built, do it.
Right click with no collide doesn't count as a Constraint. Although you can't walk on it either. Edit:
Once I got lazy and right clicked "no collide all" on a whole floor section and ended up falling through it, that should be fixed, players should not be able to go through no collide all props
This.
OH! shift + e = 45? THANK YOU! :)

And I have noticed the results.
I've just made sprites (like mario and kirby). Where would I post them? I'm quite proud of them and want to show people/ And yes they're just coloured PHX models.
I've had G-mod for awhile now, but I still can't make very good contraptions and I'm not even fucking close to understanding Wire. If someone is online right now and could help me with more advanced contraptions and a little bit of Wire that would be awesome. Just reply to this message and I'll give you my STEAM username via PM.
I honestly disagree with your post, i mean i know the quality have decreased and all but there is no motive to censure that kind of things, if you give the guy some tips instead of flaming him to the death he probably will improve his contraptions, and about PHX is up to you to think its ugly or not, and its up to the guy to make it look good or not. You can't come in here and say what we can or can't post if WE like then WE will post them rather you like them or not, i've never posted any contraptions of mine here, probably will someday. That's not a PRO CONTRAPTIONS forum, it's a contraptions forum so stop whining about things that didn't make you happy , people will post whatever they want, if you don't like it then just don't say anything about it. I liked the idea of the tips and all. And I agree with the random tips of course like using vanilla props for a car instead of a phx box.
..I used a vanilla vehicle and got critisised for it :/
