Kind of a dumb question, but what do you mean by overplayed? Do you mean that the Russians would have probably tried to only hit military targets, as well as these targets elsewhere, and then launch a second strike a year later unless the US agrees to a treaty that would have fit their demands?
I remember a documentary, called First Strike, that had that as the scenario (The simulated launch sequences inside the military bases and the planes are reused in The Day After), in which the US gets its military bases crippled pretty quickly by nuclear strikes (in some places, before the bombers could even take off, with a couple of accidental hits on civilian targets, and is forced into agreeing to a ceasefire.

The long term effects, mostly on somewhat more remote locations would be far lesser than what was present in threads. While some major cities would get fairly devasted, most medium sized ones probably would not.
Soviets on top of that had graded targeting from what I know. Military installations first, government control second and after that population centers which were tertiary at best.
Nato targeting plans on the other hand didn't seem to have actual grading and targeted population centers on the same scale as military installations.
Though nato nukes would probably not be able to launch off that many. Due to different launch sequences. Soviets had plans to launch the majority very quickly, while Nato over a number of days. Plus they tended to concentrate a lot warheads in certain locations.
Last but not least nukes are fairly clean. On top of that modern ones. The stronger the nuke the less long term radiation you get. That's why dirty bombs are so dangerous, or reactor leaks. Those tend to deposit far more irradiated material than a nuke will.
Mind you, the situation in Europe would be awfull. Big population density, major cities in loads of parts of it etc etc. There's a benefit of fairly large amounts of geological gradation which would shield certain areas at least somewhat.
The environemntal effects would probably last a maximum circa of five years though. But wouldn't be as major as threads show. (which still has massive aftereffects a decade later).
Keep in mind I haven't looked at the newest material about this for a while. But we did have a very enthusiastic trio of a bio teacher, history teach and physics one in middle school.
But overall - Warsaw pact strike planning was far superior to NATO. It had better target grading, more decentralised backbone, staggering launch numbers, third world targets (in order to ensure that soviet leadership has a chance to reintagrate itself again) and long term hidden loiterers designed to clean up enemy military assets a year or even later after the innitial strikes.
Overall that video pretty much confirms that in a sense. The US just had vastly worse planning for a noncon war.

Is it just me or did FP just change the font.

"patrolling Greece almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter"

EDIT

Just you.
The environmental effects didn't actually last that long anyways, as I recall. It's just that after a year with the nuclear winter, a thinned ozone (which would need to rebuild anyways, after that much detonation. If, of course, multiple nuclear detonations actually do affect the ozone), and British climate, it looks shittier than it probably is, in honesty.
But yeah, I kind of see now that we must not have known jackshit about Soviet missile targeting plans, and assumed they'd have the same ones as ours.
The UK just in general sounds like it would be majorly ass-raped, what with how small the region is. Sheffield got blasted pretty badly, and that was just from the one that hit RAF Finningley 20 Km away. (Although according to what you said, there likely wouldn't have been a direct strike on Sheffield, unless the Soviets missed, or they had to attack the tertiary targets).
I don't know, these movies tend to scare me because I'm currently living in a former target. Cincinnati is the only city in the region with a burn hospital D:
http://www.fas.org/nuke/intro/nuke/7906/790610.pdf Also, I dunno if you guys have time to read these kind of things, but I read the whole report once when I was bored, and it had this fictional scenario about a small town in Virginia during a limited nuclear strike against the US. I thought it was an interesting read, if a bit dry (it is kind of a short story in an academic paper, so make of it what you will).
They were private, I can remember him porting the roads.
The buildings are not private.
Well, I used a lot of different models. The weapons are the only ones that are actually from Metro 2033 (IIRC).
For starters:
Heres the actual Metro 2033 guns. They're quite large.. so I suggest you use the prop resizer tool. I found that .75 for the X, Y, and Z values was decent.
The map is part of oskutin's unfinished maps.. it's called rp_metro - Be warned, you do need the materials and models that he posted in that thread as well.
The Ranger hack which is just made up of Panther from MoH 2010 and some extra props added on. The map can be body grouped off. The face has no posing.. unless anyone would like to volunteer to fix that. - The MoH pack contains some Chechen rebels that are useful for Metro poses
I used these for some of the guards NOTICE: Requires These
These were also used for the guards
I also used this pack of miscellaneous props from Metro 2033
These too if I recall
More stuff (Metro and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. mix)
Railcarts are here
The lamp is from Left 4 Dead 1 or 2 (I forget which one) along with some of the other props (that you can't see) and the front barricade. The sandbags are from Day of Defeat: Source
And... I think that is everything.. I think..

Honestly though, Its interesting seeing your guys perspectives about the threat of nuclear war. Nobody talks about it in the US. Except that whole Cuban Missile Crisis.
*sigh* I need to learn how to hex models.. THEN I'll have something to show off...
My Hd monitor exploded on me, So now i have to use an 8.5" Monitor for the time being. :suicide:

Looks like an AFF cruiser. Probably an AISN ship from the looks of it.
i've seen AFF a few times, looks like a pretty cool mod.
i'd like to see some of the vehicles and such ported

Someone did port from the original mod (Homeworld 2) I distinctly remember the spaceships
and I was right
