Question, for a shot this close up and with such a close background, is there any way to utilize lamps without putting on a huge shadow and lighting up the background? The intent was to have a lamp facing the front of the guy sitting, but I wasn't sure on how to do so. Guess this post is half-pose/half-question.

You could tone the brightness wayyyy down until it only lights up his face, yet doesn't light the background. Or, you could edit the background to be more dark in Photoshop. Look up "Layer Masks" tutorials on how to do this effectively, if you don't already know how.

that texture size is a major space waster, you can get just as much detail at 2048^2, if you use normals, phong, and sharp textures right

But can you close up this hard? In the second one you posted I can already see epic levels of pixelation on his nose, helmet, and especially goggles.
Mine you can see the original 1024 text on the visor lookin' shit, the detail on the visor is 2048 and blurring in spots, and the blood is 4096.
And besides all that, working in 4096 is fun as hell, and I feel like a better person on the inside because my VTFs are 20MB each.

But aren't you just using blood and those weird white dots to mask up the pix-elation?.. also the blood dripping out from under the visor doesn't really make that much sense.
But it's a waste of space and that's easily done in photoshop too, there's no need to use giant textures, it's about the optimization, mine is just around 40 Mbs, and most of those textures are shared around on models, yours is probably around 100 mbs, just for one model!
It is a waste of space, when you can get something that looks just as good at 2048^2 and even 1024^2, and if it looks odd, then just edit it so it looks better!

Holy Shit. How did you add scars on Baker's face ?
Looks good, is there a clean version?
Clean looks pretty bad because anything not covered in blood or sparkles is still low-res. Unmodified lower half for example.

But it's so fucking fun! I love being able to flaunt my texture budget even if it's hard to tell from afar, it's just something I enjoy and can afford processing and storage-wise, so I'm going to splurge however and whenever possible.
