I think it was the equivalent to the m1 carbine/m1a1.

You should also specify whether you're talking about the M1A1 Carbine, or the M1A1 Thompson. Also, the M1 Carbine fired a much less powerful round than the M1 Garand did.

The M1s and the G43s are entirely different guns. The M1 Garand uses .30-06 Springfield cartridge while the M1 Carbine fires the .30 Carbine, which is about a third of the size. The Gewehr 43 fires the 8mm Mauser, which is slightly smaller than the .30-06 Springfield.
