Source Recorder - Video tutorial about how to use the new AVI method.
95 replies, posted
NOTE: If you're using a SourceMod (like Insurgency, Gmod9, or Dystopia), the AVI file will be located in:
Steam > SteamApps > *YOUR STEAM NAME* > source skd base (or sourcesdk/_content, its one of those)
EDIT2: It's SUPPOSED to be laggy. Source Recorder takes a screenshot every frame basically to render the scene. Although this will be really laggy in-demo, your video quality will be really high and will have a flawless framerate in the video, no matter what is going on (like 2000 exploding barrels)
I love the tutorial! Thank you very much! I'm going to print some for my friends!
and the result is amazing! Weird enough SR could record sounds, because when I use gamecam or fraps, it won't record any sounds...
Is there some sort of command to "pause" the recording? Or do I record a whole hour+ and edit out the parts where im setting up? Or just record each scene and end them all, and then piece together all my clips?
this thread wasn't needed to be bumped
but what's the console command to hide the hud and shit

I was wondering the same thing... I would recomend recording for the hour, if you haven't found a solution yet. But I would also like to know what program I need to use to edit the clip. Anyone know?
Edit:
Nevermind. I figured it out... But how do I compress the file? I saved it as an AVI and it is now 3GB's. Way too much for an 11 minute clip.
I will use MPEG next time.
Edit: [again]
Now it keeps telling me that I don't have the right codec. I downloaded the Mega Pack with just about every box clicked. Why won't it work?
I no longer have any problems with this.
Hooray for bumping!
So if the uncompressed isn't meant for playback, then why would you choose it? When I play it it's all purple and shit and my hard drive starts making this terrifying squeaking/buzzing noise, even when I open it in a video editor.
When I try and compress it in Virtualdub, the codecs aren't there. I've tried re-installing them but they won't show up.
Thank you, this helped me a a lot.
I have a question:
Is it possible to activate motion blur during demo playback?
I don't see any motion blur in my rendered avi.
Right after I type in "playdemo <demoname>" it loads the demo, freezes then crashes. I chose the Xvid mpeg4 codec and I'm in 16:10 widescreen at the smallest resolution. Why is this happening?
Why did someone bump this really old thread. :v:

Same thing but only when I choose the xvid codec. Someone help?
the sound fucks up when i play my movie
My recorded emitter's don't show up, help?
And, it is still a little bit laggy when i play the movie in windows media player.
Help? Anyone?
There was a bump. For useful thread.
So uncompressed video does not work at all?
I have a problem with source recorder, when i start the movie and play the demo i recorded, particles from the particle emitter don't show up, and when i switch to the hand held camera which is zoomed in, it isn't zoomed in when its playing.

Because the thread is still useful?

Why the fuck use MPEG with the Source Recorder
It basically destroys its purpose

It's in /garrysmod/ for AVIs, /garrysmod/garrysmod/ for the rest
Hey i tried following another tutorial on facepunch with the virtualdub method. but the outcome proved to be laggy and bad quality even though i followed every step in order of achieving the best quality. Also this method just leaves me with a DEM. file. NO AVI! even though i say avi after recording, startmovie all tht bullshit.. ive tried it in a billion different orders.. tried different codecs or whatever when the little window popped up but nothing.. they all said " and now you should have an avi file " at the end.. and even though i folowed all those billion video tutorials and all kidns of tutorials i ended up with a DEM. file not an AVI file. i have VLC and k-lite codec pack and all tht but i can still not play it .. .what do i do to get an avi file that doesent lag?... from the recorder known for quality and NON LAGGINESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE ANSWER i am desperate il worship you for life...
Have you tried going under Video, Frame Rate... And making sure that audio and video durations match? Enable that and see if it makes a difference. I had the same problem as you until I enabled it.

I suggest you download the Video Codec Pack Hat posted in his original Source Recorder Tutorial; and then use the Xvid codec when you create your movies. Also make sure you're in window before you type startmovie MOVIENAME avi. If it's in fullscreen it won't work from what I've seen.
Okay, got it all to work however. i select Xvid mpeg 4 codec and it loads up the demo, and then i get an Hl2.exe Error before the demo gets recorded and the game crashes . it kind of works half assdely with intel or whatever codec, or some other codecs, but the other codes just lag and has horrible quality and long videos with intel just leaves me with a broken avi. file which VLC then tries to repair but doesent work ( this worked somewhat with shorter video clips) but the long ones wont repair, and turn out like all green-ish and distortet and giving a horrible ear raping sounds. what do i do? please help me. i have k-lite codec pack, divx codecs, xvid codecs, but they dont work. i get a 0 kb avi file with some codecs and the xvid mpeg 4 just crashed the game.

Better method
I have tried that in the past. however i end up with a blue-ish wierd coloured video thats laggy, ( NOT even 30 fps, more like 10 ) audio out of sync and not even good video quality.) i chose the uncompressed thingy that you told me i could use at the top of the list, i followed every single step and instruction however it did not work for me. Any ideas? Please help! il worship you for life T_T
host_framerate appears to be hidden in L4D2, fucking sucks.
Help! when i go to add the video to movie maker it keeps saying it is corrupt and i followed all of the steps!
This is VERY helpful, but you see i want to make the players move around, in a way the game cant, like stretch out their heads or make their arms do weird movements, like the ones on Youtube with Team Fortress 2

Source Film-maker, it has nothing to do with this.
It worked for the first video I did, then it stopped working. Why is this? Another thing to notice is this: FIXME: DivX, only for now. For one thing, this is probably the problem. I have DivX installed... why is this??
