Except that it kinda doesn't. The shading is kinda nice and all, but the whole thing is waaaaaay too over-contrasted and bloomy.

I kinda like the over contrast and bloom in this picture. Makes me think of a dawn sun behind the guy. Sometimes overexposition and contrast work well. This is one of the cases they do.

I'm sorry, but what exactly is your argument? That lighting and filtering is a minor detail? Lighting and filtering is one of the [i]biggest fucking details[/i] of [i]anything.[/i] Whether it's a gmod pose, a video game, a photograph, or a movie. Good posing is good posing, but bad lighting conditions can make any picture look bad.
I don't just view gmod poses from a general posing effort standpoint, I view them as a whole. Like a photograph.

Art doesn't only rely on "the way things look", but since it's GMod it's pretty hard to do anything else.
