I'm pretty sure most people just slap on some of their own makeshift AO (aka burning the image to oblivion) and call it a day.
These pictures you are using as examples really look wonky seeing as the highlights aren't as contrasted as the shadows of the image. IMHO you are making the shadows too exaggerated for what light is already on the subject thus completely destroying the composition
I made the self shadowing dark on purpose.
For better readability.
