Looks like Kapersky Labs couldn't find traces of adware on my computer. But luckily I found out there was a DNS Unblocker virus was hiding in my addons and I reset my browser's settings afterwards.

If you're unlucky then yes, don't power on your PC untill you've opened it up to check the PSU and motherboard.

Anything that looks burned or for broken circuitry. Make sure to have proper lighting overhead so you can see everything in detail.
If possible, remove and (carefully) open up the PSU if you want to be really certain although it might be overkill.

Just make sure to look around the area where your USB port(s) are for anything that looks odd.

i looked around last night right after it happened and externally the PSU and ports seemed fine, the plugs of the cables weren't even hot. i'll check the insides though

to clarify, the transformer went up a little less than a second after the PC had turned off. i dont think there's anything wrong but it never hurts to check

Like I said, overkill. However seeing as your issue is more related to the USB ports your PC should theoretically be fine if everything around that specific area looks intact.
