It's doesn't mean the actual date moving, it means the level of technology. It's a general trope to technology being more advanced that would be associated with that period. I.e. cyborgs and railguns in the cold war, m4 rifles with grenade launchers in ww2 and so forth.
It doesn't literally mean time is further on, you guys really have a stick up your ass sometimes you both could have avoided making unnecessary drama and all you had to do was punch up a quick "It is 2016 in esp wars and we have advanced robotics, armour, aeronautics and weapons technology used by some factions." you could also point out that some factions are heavily stylised. For example GSAF has a distinct 'Cold War' style feel to it but has modern technology, Tbonia gives off a Soviet vibe and there there are corporations like Towerlight who had much more fancy sci-fi looking gear or VDI, or ODQ, etc, etc.
Christ no wonder new people get put off from getting into this.

The WLA was designed in 1998 by the PLA of China. It's a army of international volunteers, its function was help the chinese UN peacekeepers. It was put into service in 1999 under control of Director Angel and monitored by the PLA. The WLA have participated in humanitarian missions, helping civilians in warzones. In 2009, the WLA broke with the Chinese army due to conflicts about the PLA's training tactics and lack of autonomy of the WLA. Today it remains an international army of volunteers dedicated to pacify conflict zones and help civilians.

The WLA is a Army of International volunteers. There are people from a lot countries, ethnicities. And yeah. What the hell is wrong with this guys? I didn't notice it when I did the pic

Today Boliveria is the Fourth largest oil producer in South America and at the end of 2014 it was estimated Boliveria was producing a million barrels a day. Boliveria is also one of the worlds biggest cocaine manufacturers and exporters, with several reports from the National Ministry of Internal Affairs (NMIA) suggesting that many of the local cartels have possible government or military ties. Alongside Oil and Drugs, Boliveria is no stranger from Arms trading. And is one of the regions leading exporters in Armored Vehicles, Rifles and Handguns.
Since the 1970s, the country has suffered from an asymmetric low-intensity armed conflict, which escalated in the 1990s, but then decreased from 2005 onward.
The National Army of Boliveria (Ejército Nacional de Boliveria) is the land military force of Boliveria and the largest branch of the Boliverian Armed Forces. It is responsible for carrying out land-based military operations along with the Boliverian Naval Infantry (Infanteria de Marina) and for protecting the Boliverian state against domestic or foreign threats. as of 2016 it is 245, 321 men strong.
