the books aren't too pricey
Which one would you reccomend to start with?
I started with grey knights, now I'm working on a Death Korps of Krieg apocalypse army. I suggest going with Space marines first. Or if you like massive numbers, go with orcs.
the novel "Helsreach" is an excellent introduction to Space Marines, humans and such from the first-person viewpoint of a fanatical Chaplain of the Black Templars chapter. the book is about them fighting against Orks in the apocalyptic Third War for Armageddon, and it features Marines, Imperial Guard, Titans and greenskins. it doesn't hold the reader's hand too much but still is a very good first dive into the universe however, more than that i have to recommend the opening trilogy of the Horus Heresy series, if you want a bit different take on the same universe. set in the immediate beginning of the ancient galactic civil war which resulted in the birth of the Chaos Space Marines and saw the Imperium turn from a secular imperialist dystopia into a theocractic über-fascist dystopia, the three books are full of great characters, world building, drama and battles. they give a very decent introduction into the Imperium-that-was and how it all would go wrong, Space Marines, the Primarch demigods, and the corrupting nature of Chaos. the three novels are called Horus Rising, False Gods and Galaxy in Flames, in that order. the Codex rulebooks also contain lots of lore, of course, but their main purpose is to serve as, well, rulebooks, so if you're like me and are more interested in the lore than the game itself, go for the literature
I've read up some of the Codexes but that was about 2 years ago and i can't remember a thing. Thanks, i'll get Helsreach and that Trilogy and tell you how i find em.
Recently read "Dead Men Walking" novel by Steve Lyons and actually liked it a lot, so i would recommend that too.

time to put this where it belongs [t]http://orig12.deviantart.net/b538/f/2017/030/e/9/first_blood_by_joazzz2-daxa5vw.jpg[/t] and another thing [t]http://orig11.deviantart.net/6fc1/f/2017/024/3/9/for_the_five_hundred_worlds_by_joazzz2-dawk3cd.jpg[/t]
Idk Joazzz, the last pic was perfectly fine and should've been the thread pic itself. Looks gorgeous.
right, so should i stick to making generic grey-brown battle scenes then? is "dust and smoke with space morons" seriously the only thing i'm decent at? because i'm honestly sick of them and last i heard so was the community.
you should pose whatever you want, but you need to accept criticism when people give it to you
i've been here for nine years - what gives you the idea that i don't listen to feedback? it's what has helped me develop what little skill i have. it's the sole reason my shit looks better than babby's first screenshot. don't give me shit about not taking criticism, that is not the problem. the problem is that i haven't made a scene with a sufficient amount of flawlessness yet. if you have any artistic integrity, you know that a work can be only great or garbage. this is the standard i work with. this is the standard EVERYONE should work with. it's unforgiving, but it kills laziness and may eventually result in something marvelous. it's a self-flagellating struggle for superhuman greatness. there is no perfection, but you can achieve the thing closest to it. take this latest thing for example. every artistic work has a central thing that everything else is built around. in that shot it was the main character. he was to be imposing, huge, exhibiting martial prowess. a warrior in every meaning of the word going against his equal on even terms in a still shot of overly masculine drama. the pillar holding up the atmosphere of the scene, an implacable wall standing to ward off mediocrity just as he stands to face his opponent in a game of blades. the core, the nucleus, the plot itself made manifest in one character. and he was a complete failure. people could only see how flawed the depiction was. i painted his sweat, i drew his scars, i rendered the chest wound with painstaking detail, but there was still something about the head positioning or lighting. a small problem in some other scene, but not here. the pillar cracked, the wall crumbled, and everything went to hell with them. THAT is the meaning of ruination. the core of the work is violently torn out by a simple error and it eats the entire piece alive. and i should've seen it. i didn't. a bunch of amateurs had the eyes to notice a fundamental flaw that i didn't even glimpse after doing countless screenshots with monumental effort. my own inability to see stole hours of labor from me and i will always hate myself for this error, an error in a long tally of errors. i will not make another thread for any screenshot until i manage to grasp the level of magnificence i crave.
Snip Snip
and your reasoning being? i hope you don't take the "amateur" thing too hard, i'm on my phone so i go for the short, sometimes rude form of saying things. i mean no offence with that, not to anyone but myself anyway. if it grinds someone's gears, i'm sorry.
No one said it was shit, you're being extremely harsh on yourself. Like I said, a soft lamp/light as a rimlight can fix the thing we think looks off. It isn't ruined, you should relax a little and look at it once more
I must apologize as well because that was a kneejerk reaction. I said that because at first i thought your attitude was rude, telling people to do what you do etc etc but then i realized its not really that bad. I think that way of thinking is very damaging and that no one should do that in any form. Wanting nothing but near true perfection is almost impossible.
No one said it was shit, you're being extremely harsh on yourself. Like I said, a soft lamp/light as a rimlight can fix the thing we think looks off. It isn't ruined, you should relax a little and look at it once more
no-one said it was shit and no-one thought it, but having a small error in a critical spot can really destroy the whole thing for me. being harsh on yourself is better than being lax. the former may drive me crazy but the latter invites stagnation. my model test shots are lazy enough, i can't afford that with proper scenes. which side needs the rimlighting though? Prototype said the problem was more with the half that's in the shade, that there was extra shading. so should there be some more light coming from behind the guy to bring out the shape of the darkened parts?
I'm not very good at criticism because i'm not good at describing detail parts of images. I think you've created this thing where people want to give criticism because you want to strive for perfection and giving criticism will allow you to go even further but they don't give any because they don't want you to throw away an (To us) excellent photo.
which just leaves me wondering if there is something wrong with it after all. hearing about mistakes can drive me up the wall but it also leads to improvement.
Yes, that would do the trick. There is a pretty bright atmosphere so the shadows, especially on the right side that are caused by his body, should look a bit brighter than they are now
realistically, yes, but i sought to give it more contrast for a more dramatic feel. i'll try the lighting thing later today though.

Seeing it from a avarage joe's position. I think it looks amazing, it looks better than what most of us can make.

Some ripples in the water around their legs and this picture would be perfection.
