a friend of mine drew the sparks for me, I really couldn't make them look as good as this.
We really do need some good spark effects in Source. Getting tired of having to reuse the Grey Mann Bot sparks or ones that don't have enough "oomph!" as this poster.

For some reason I couldn't nail the perfect night lighting without fearing it being too dark to see the models.
the solution then is to have an overall dark atmosphere but with something like street lights or car headlights lighting up the important parts.

I see you got it, just keep working on it. Both of them look good in terms of composition, the golden ratio is perfect, the first one is better to see as mini preview lol, blurry props.

I took this one using the poster command but I think I fupped it up, any feedback is nice.
could someone please explain how the fuck the "golden ratio" is even supposed to work
is it related to the rule of thirds somehow?
when i try to google for examples all i get is that swirl thing that supposedly marks good composition, but nothing on how it WORKS.
someone, please, in terms a simpleton can understand

To be honest, it's difficult to explain. It seems the reason for why we as humans are drawn towards it isn't quite solved. But to kind of (I know not really) answer your question.
It's a mathematical equation which produces what are commonly considered aesthetically pleasing compositions due to its generally mysterious 'harmonic' balance.
Looking at this:

You can see that each rectangle is twice the size of the previous, and the only way this can continue is in a spiral motion. When following this spiral (not too dissimilarly from the way you would the rule of thirds, often on the lines or cross-sections) in compositions, the result is generally structurally pleasurable.
I know this won't quite give you want, I assume I just described it as opposed to explaining it. The best thing to do would be to look into its relation to composition in photography and paintings. Even architecture, as it pops up often in that industry.
But aren't there two versions of the golden ratio? It's the phi grid and the spiral right?

The golden ratio is a constant = 1.618... which is (ironically to its name) irrational. It's not related to the rule of thirds, but has a similar purpose.
[t]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/8e/SimilarGoldenRectangles.svg/440px-SimilarGoldenRectangles.svg.png[/t]
Simply put, the golden ratio occurs with real constants a and b when the ratio (a+b)/a equals the ratio a/b, or more formally; (a+b)/a = a/b --implies--> a/b = 1.618... which is the golden ratio.
The reason that's (mathematically) special is because the ratio can be found between any set of numbers a,b,c,d... and so on (where the sum "a+b" gets smaller (or larger) every iteration, essentially becoming the new "b"), which is why people like to symbolize it with that spiral you mentioned. It's also found to occur naturally in plants and other organic structures, and served as a guideline in architecture and stuff. Similarly artists may use it as a guideline for borders/significant lines in any given artwork, because the spiral (that occurs between the quarter circles with a radius 'a' continued by the quarter circle with a radius 'b' continues by a quarter of a circle with radius 'c' and so on) is perfectly smooth in its transitions, making for some visually pleasing curvatures. For example:
You're right, the spiral is based of a Fibonacci sequence, starting at 0,1 and continued such that every next number is the sum of the two previous ones; 0,1,1,2,3,5,8 and so on. The n sized element in comparison to the n+1 sized element in the Fibonacci sequence is very similar in proportions to the golden ratio, or more formally the limit of (n+1)/n at n->infinity = the golden ratio. For example, 8/5 = 1.6. Similarly, 144/89 = 1.617... and so on (89 and 144) are two neighboring numbers in the Fibonacci sequence.

I think the glowing green graffiti is way out of place, its contrast makes it the center of attention and it looks way too pasted in on the wall given how its lighting mismatches the environment's
They both work the same way.

Yours is better.
oh bejeezus, i can't wrap my head around any of this. i think i'll just stick to the phi grid version without worrying about the spiral thing.
well hopefully this will make up for the abomination of a thing i Made earlier.

All you need to know is that you can get anything looking good inside the phi grid spiral
