I don't know why but I'm getting the urge to critize all the flaws in this picture, sorry if it's too harsh: There are flaws in the objects' lighting etc. Starting from front most to rear most: Closest trooper's right shoulder pad has an unexplained black outline the left-most car's textures are very low quality relative to the rest of the models given how close it is to the camera the rimlight on the rightmost trooper is too strong the object's lighting doesnt make sense: the speculars on the gas canister and absolutely 0 shadows it casts, the blueish dark color of the sidewalk/pavement doesnt fit with the lighting on the barricade props to the right, there's a weird object just right of the further car's rear wheel that's clipping through the ground a bit, the cable above the middle most trooper is extremely low polygon, the metal pole above the left most trooper's head has inconsistent fog (right is no fog, left suddenly has a fog pass) none of the obecjts are really casting shadows other than the two troopers holding the corpse/wounded armored robot thing (which itself is not casting shadows) And above all I can't really tell what kind of situation/scene you were going for, it's unclear what's going on or why - why is that trooper holding the phone, why is another taking aim (probably at a nearby enemy while the rest are all being casual), etc I liked the first pic's composition more, I don't really get why you cropped out so much of it out after taking the time to pose it. the background is just as important as the subjects if not more. Try and redo your composition slightly, and redo the lighting, try and use more lamps to lighten your scene; if something isnt casting shadows properly make up for it by placing invisible props inside of that something - better than nothing. If your speculars (shiny envmaps etc) don't fit the lighting, take them out with mat_specular 0 in console. It's a shame seeing posing/in-game effort like this go to waste with weaker composition/lighting/post
Thanks for writing all that, I don't like it much either :P I noticed the issues with the rim lighting (too bright, black outline) earlier today, that stuff is mostly lazy photoshopping. My biggest issue with it is that I had no real general idea on what I was going to do with it, I just sort of plopped random ragdolls down doing things and threw lighting down on top of it. I think the scenebuild is pretty good though, so I'll probably use that later. Oh well, I figured I'd post it because I spent so much time on it and I can learn from it.

the overly detailed and bumpy surfaces look horrible in my own opinion. it's very pronounced here: [img]http://i.cubeupload.com/JoHlwx.jpg[/img] it doesn't look realistic, it doesn't look natural, it's like overdone tessellation - all geometry and no detail. plastic, play-doh, like ripples or vibrations are running through the rock. it works on the big vertical cliffs better but the ground looks like dogshit. tone it the hell down especially in the mossy parts. and get some normal mapping going already.

He just needs to tweak the textures to better suit the geometry.
