I have the same problem and I've never downloaded any pirate version of a game. GMod was the 1st game on my computer. I use Norton, could the antivirus be the problem?
Oh my god, I don't know where to start. Norton and Windows XP is like the worst combination. You need to upgrade to Windows 7 or 8, and when you've done that, don't use Norton
I have the same problem, I fixed it with tf2 by changing my download region, but Gmod is a no-no. I've tried everything, firewall exception, uninstalling steam and installing it back again, if anyone could help, that'd be greatly appreciated.

I've given up on everything, I can't reset my hosts file, I can't uninstall my expired Norton antivirus, I can't uninstall AVG, malwarebytes is annoying me to update something every 5 minutes...
I'd recommend formatting your computer. To reset your hosts file, make a new blank text document, put 127.0.0.1 localhost within it, save it without .txt as it's it's extension and name it hosts. copy and paste it into the folder with your actual hosts file to overwrite it.
Nooope, didnt need to format my computer... Heres the story: I tried to stream using OBS on twitch.tv and it said "Cannot Connect to server! It may be a problem on your firewall or on your antivirus" so i got mad and uninstalled, deleted, crushed, shredded all the files that had "antivirus" written on it. I deleted AVG I deleted Norton I deleted everything I reseted the host file then i tried streaming again BOOM it worked When i was done streaming I tried playing GMOD BOOM SERVERS WENT WLOWLWOLWOWL HELLO THERE PHOTO I SEE YOU WANT TO PLAY SOME GMOD HERE YOU GO OH YES BABY DARLING YES End scene Lock this thread please Thanks to everyone that helped! Seriously, I should give you all a kiss or something *wink* See you guys in game! :)
