yeah man, fucking idiots doing what they want with their money and getting what they prefer.

Actually, while that's probably true for the artsy people, for programmers, especially those working in languages such as Ruby, Windows is completely out of the question due to it's poor terminal application and general lack of support from these communities.
Now this leaves Linux and OS X, both of which are great OSs, I even have both of them running in my household so I can speak from experience here. Linux is a great OS for development, it's command line is second to none and it's got great support for the aforementioned language, but it lacks a lot of programs that I need as a student (such as a decent word processor or presentation software) and for that reason will never probably be my default OS, it also lacks support for Photoshop which, at least for me, is a must if I'm doing any design related stuff for a rails app. So my current setup is to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7, but this has many drawbacks, such as the time I waste rebooting all the time.
So if I was using OS X, I'd have access to both a powerful UNIX backend and terminal as well as Photoshop and some office software (I personally like iWork but Office 2011 mac looks neat). As well as this I have access to some wonderful mac-only software such as Notational Velocity, which seems a nice replacement for my current notepad++ and dropbox setup, as well as amazing code editors like TextMate and Coda.
That is why I want a mac, not for any shiny UI elements or some perception that it will land me a job at some hip San Fransisco based graphic design firm (37signals and github are far more appealing), but because it's insanely practical for what I do.
Once again I have used all the software and OSs I mention here so this is as unbiased as I can get.

open office
there are pretty much free alternatives for everything out there

I have used open office many times, but it lacks the polish and ease of use offered by pretty much everything else (iWork and Office). It feels cheap and crappy to be entirely honest, I use these programs a lot so I want a polished modern UI, not a bunch of clunky menus that look like they were stolen from windows 95.
before I got linux on my netbook everyone was praising open office claiming it was a free word.
needless to say I was extremely disappointed.
There's a new fork of OO called Open Libre designed to take it in a new direction. Hopefully a better direction.

i use oo on my windows computer right now, it's perfectly fine, does whatever i need it to
You have to remember guys that its free, you can't expect the same polish as MS.
That's precisely why he's sticking to MS Office in the first place like he mentioned. I'd prefer to do the same if I had money for a copy of Office for this PC.
If you have the money then why not.
I like free things and OO does what I need it to do
I tend to like free things too but the truth is that I'm yet to find a good replacement for commercial office software, the same applies to Photoshop. Oh and TextMate but that's like $10.
I don't like the way Apple just drops things. Like Adobe, the company that probably made the Mac as popular as it is today.
Apple is a weird company.

Apple didn't 'drop' Adobe, they dropped Flash. Now while I think it's a dick move towards both Adobe and the users of any iOS devices who now can't view flash content, it's part of a push to get HTML5 some more recognition and strong-arm people into using it.
Still not sure how I feel about that though, people should have a choice about how they author content, they just need to make the better option an obvious choice without disallowing everything else.
I heard that Microsoft was looking into buying Adobe. I have a feeling they would down the performance or something on mac because you know what Microsoft is like.
intelligent conversation? in MY h&s? I won't have it!
you mean one of these?

Connected my oldest computer's Quantum Bigfoot CY up to see if I could grab some DOS games off of it. Works like a charm.

Pretty nice setup ya got there, chair looks comfy and old ass 7up
I don't see where all this mac hate is coming from, every OS has it's flaws and anyone who's used Windows or even Linux for a while will know this. Can we just get over this constant need to validate our opinions and just be happy with what we choose to use. If you're honestly happy with your choice of OS you shouldn't need to justify it to a bunch of people on an internet forum.
As much as I hate Windows for being proprietary bullshit, I've gotta admit I hate how stubborn the Linux world is, I hate pretty much everything about BSD, I hate the community around OS X, and I hate the lack of software for MINIX.
I must say MINIX would be the best operating system ever if it had some more software.

I actually find that Mac OS X users seem to be some of the nicest people I've had the joy of talking to. Windows users seem to have this weird god complex relating to Microsoft and refuse to use anything other than Visual Studio and the related.net languages. Linux users seem to be scared to move beyond decade old UI concepts in their applications (when do you see a UI as effective as Office 2010's or iPhoto's in Linux?) and tend to be overly stubborn and opinionated.
Mac users on the other hand seem to be fairly open to new ideas and Apple does an actually pretty great job at delivering those. Sure some might be a bit rubbish but for a company of that size to keep pouring money into these risky ideas is nothing short of remarkable.
