So my prebuilt HP from 2008 finally died. And at a pretty bad time for me financially. I'm not doing bad, I just don't have the cash to really get something amazing. Last computer was a hp p6245f. 8 gig ram, AMD Phenom II x4 820, 750 gig hhd, m2n78-la motherboard, and I added a Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 card, and a 650w psu [but i have a 750 waiting to be installed]. Was running CSGO on mostly high/ very high at around 80 fps So I don't have much money to really throw at a computer right now. I was completely making due with what [I consider to be] little power my old computer was putting out. I mainly play CSGO and Call of Duty, so I don't need anything EXTREME. Other than that I just work on videos in Vegas, and surf the web. So based off what I already have [gpu, keyboard/ mouse/ monitor, hdd, psu] what would be a usable cheap option for me to build a computer? I already have a case I WANT to buy [Corsair Vengeance C70], but anything that's well vented will do in the meantime. Budget I'm thinking around $350-400 USD.
You could probably shoehorn a new motherboard into your existing HP case. The only two snags you have to check are if the mounts are standard and if the rear I/O plate is standard. I think you'll be fine since most motherboards in OEM computers are usually just stripped down retail designs from other manufacturers. If you reused the case, all you'd really need is a new motherboard, CPU and RAM. The case doesn't have very good venting and heats up a bit. Also my roommate says that the i3 will just give me grief in the end. So the i5 can have 2.8 GHz but a i3 can have 3.4 GHz. In what situation is one better than the other? I'm not well read with CPU's and Motherboards.
the i5 would be a quad core so any multi threaded games will run better although i don't see why an i3 would give you grief, my girlfriend has an i3 3220 and she runs most games at high settings and does almost anything just fine
I've learned to take things he says with a grain off salt, but i neglected to ask further about what he meant. But the reason i asked was because I found a computer selling on craigslist with an i5 in it at 2.8 GHz and 8gig ram for $300. It would be a cheaper alternative considering having to get windows for another $100 after building is done.
What is your RAM? The Phenom II series can support both DDR3 and DDR2. [editline]4th November 2014[/editline] Nevermind, I looked it up and the motherboard takes DDR2.
My only concern would be the air flow. The case doesn't have very good venting and heats up a bit.
The Phenom II x4 820 is a 95W part, the i3-4130 is a 54W part. You're going to have considerably less problems with heat from the processor. if the GTX 650 you have exhausts outside the case, that makes it even better.
Also my roommate says that the i3 will just give me grief in the end. So the i5 can have 2.8 GHz but a i3 can have 3.4 GHz. If we're comparing an i3 and i5 from the same generation: In single threaded applications, the i3 will be faster because of the higher core clock. In applications where only two threads are utilized, the i3 will still probably be faster due to core clock. In applications where more than two threads are utilized, the i5 will beat the i3. The i3 can process four threads at a time thanks to Hyperthreading, but performance on each thread will be degraded because each thread shares a core with another thread. The i5 has four individual cores so threads don't have to share resources.

But it's old, uses an outdated socket and has no warranty. The i3-4130 will run circles around that thing. If you live in Austin or San Marcos, I can come look at your dead machine :v: I live in the area.

It is a hardware problem to my knowledge. I have some of the bsod screens saved if it would help.
