My Macbook only took 20 minutes and it has those slow piece of shit 5400 RPM drives.
You installed Windows on a Mac? Hmm... Well, dunno why it takes so long. My HDD is fine though. But I never counted the time, so it's probably not so long as said.
I switched back to windows 7 because windows 8.1 had no MIDI support, as in no MIDI devices.

The only downside to windows 8 is that it hides your desktop when you search for a program to launch. For some reason people haste it when the desktop goes away when you type something into the start screen for 2 seconds
Actually it's not since you trust your AV which makes you kinda careless. So you just click and download everything while you keep in mind "my AV will warn me". Rather no AV in this case. The brain.exe is the best AV you can have anyway. But just in case AVG is checking potential dangerous files for me. I don't need it, but you never know. Edit: For all those who disagree, I would like to see why you think that's not true/stupid. Gimme some reasons/examples.
Brain.exe does not protect you from drivebys.

Granted, I use BASSMIDI to use different soundfonts, but it does use the godawful MS GS Wavetable synth by default. BASSMIDI has its own utility for selecting MIDI devices though.
Get windows 8 if you're willing to take some time to make it worthwhile. There are countless tools that remove anything you might find bad about it or add awesome new stuff. For me it's pretty much windows 7 but much more sexy and without a start menu. I got a great explorer mod though, so I don't really need it.
Pepper;44372316']Brain.exe does not protect you from drivebys.
Good point. But still, if you only visit trusted sites (No, I'm not talking about porn sites) then you're kinda safe.
Windows 8 has some user interface changes (metro, ribbon in explorer), so you will need to check if that is nice with you. Remember that you can install Windows 7 without a key for 30 day evaluation, or Windows 8 Enterprise for 90 days. These are free and should help you in your choice of operating system (assuming you are able to burn DVDs). Remember to check if there are drivers for Windows 8.1 - they should be there, but sometimes hardware manufacturers are lazy and don't release them for a long time. Windows 8 has some improvements, but also drops support or is not compatible with some stuff.
Good point. But still, if you only visit trusted sites (No, I'm not talking about porn sites) then you're kinda safe.
"Trusted" websites get compromised all the time. Also ads on those "trusted" websites can spread malware. There's no reason not to install av software, it's easy, there are plenty of free options, and they barely use any resources. [editline]27th March 2014[/editline] Nice counter-argument Wyvyrias, that box showed me that you're right.
Good point. They got a bad rap and changed it. Religious sites are the new major target. [editline]27th March 2014[/editline] Also on topic, I upgraded from Win7 to 8 about 2 months ago and can see no reason why I'd want to go back.
Uhh, what? My MIDI controller works just fine in 8.1
Well, it has something to do with that if you have an older motherboard (mine is from 2010), you'll get a driver descriptor failure, i only know that as soon as i switched back to windows 7, the problems where over. So i'm not switching back again, as it only caused me problems. only reason I haven't switched is my lazy ass self doesn't want to back up all my C drive stuff and move it all over. (when I do upgrade to 8 I'm getting an EVO) but i see nothing wrong with 8.1 now. my windows 7 hasn't been wiped in a couple years now.

I whipe most of my computers on a 6 month-1 year basis. Go with 8 though. I thought I wouldn't like it at first either but it's definitely grown on me and I don't use 7 at all on any of my computers now. Skydrive is also really nice (and built in 8.1) if you're in school and want to make sure if you write a paper on your desktop it'll be on your laptop.
IMO, if you already have a key and copy of 7, just use that. If not, go for 8.
