Hey everyone.
Don't know if you heard, but here is an interesting piece of audio gear:
http://www.head-fi.org/products/superlux-hd-668-b/reviews
http://www.headfonia.com/superlux-hd668b/
It's getting rave reviews (considered by some to be better than HD650!) and is only $50!
Might be worthwhile for those with a lower budget.
Cheers!

While good for their price, a lot of the reviews state that they are, in fact, not a giant killer.

Just letting the good people know.
Might be interesting for someone with a <$50 budget.

Yes definitely, it's a brilliant budget choice. I'm just saying it's not as good as you make it out to be cause I just ordered a HD558 and you're giving me buyers remorse.

Canada.
Not going to work. Cheapest I found them here was 50.
Just felt like posting the results I got from this thread; I got my Audio Technica ATH-M50S today and I really love the sound differense. What makes it even better, is that I also have a new soundcard along with a real headphone amplifier. I never realised that the differense would be this noticable. Thanks for everyone who recomended these headphones.

Hell man it's $20, you could probably make that by begging. The superlux are by far the best you're going to find in this price range, if you care at all about sound quality you owe it to yourself to earn that extra $20. If you don't care then what the hell are you doing here?
[editline]7th July 2011[/editline]
It's so little money I would give that to you if I had any on my paypal.
[editline]7th July 2011[/editline]
So what's a good low-mid end sound card for my soon-to-arrive Sennheiser HD 558? I'll probably be getting it around late august but it never hurts to do early research.

Care about sound yes.
Old Sennheiser's finally died, yes.
Employed, no.
Hell I haven't been employed for almost a year.
All I have now is the IEM's that came with my HTC Desire Z.
Surprisingly good, but not up to par with some good cans at all.
EDIT: Oh hey, www.greenflymusicsupply.com are selling them for 40, shipping appears to be free and it comes to Canada.
Anypne else who wants these things, jump on this.
I really recommend Creative Fatal1ty headset, it has good microphone, bass and you can take the microphone away if you dont need it
I really recommend Creative Fatal1ty headset, it has good microphone, bass and you can take the microphone away if you dont need it
[del]Eat shit and die.[/del]
The creative fatality headset is not good, it is an overpriced and very bad product.
I've owned two over the course of 4 years so I would know, durability is shit and they tend to break either in the rotating joints or the cable will start to go making it crackle.
The sound quality is terrible, bloated bass, non existent mid-range and too bright high.
The microphone is quite shit as well, the $4 zalmam mic-1 beats it handily.
Had it been $10 it would be no issue, but it is in fact $40. For that money a zalman mic-1 clip on and a pair of sennheisers that fit the budget will be many times better and more enjoyable.
Or hell, the superlux from a little bit up the page would beat even the Sennheiser.
I need some headphones that are very lightweight, preferably no isolation and the purpose is for gaming. Preferably no microphone but I don't mind if there is one.
Budget is anything up to £30
Country is UK
Budget: $0-$250
Ebay: Sure, but why?
Country: Sweden
Isolation: Great
Purpose: Gaming
Musical Tastes: Trance, techno, hardstyle, house, dubstep
I need great isolation for noisy LANs and a good microphone with good isolation as well. Also, when I say that the purpose is gaming, I don't mean "i need to hear where they are" in Counter-Strike. I play RTS.

I would think that open cans would be preferable in a lan so you can hear when people are talking to you, but personal preference I guess.
Anyways it sounds like the Audio Technica M-50 is right up your alley, good isolation and good bass for your music styles.

Try one of the open headphones in the Sennheiser HD400 series. Just pick one you like.
Also have a look at the Koss porta pro.
Seen this and knew you'd all love it so much!!!!

I don't want to hear people talk to me outside of the headset. If I need to talk to people, I use Skype/Ventrilo.
The m50 is comfortable good all rounder.
Just came across this - not sure if it's been posted before: http://eu.audio-technica.com/en/support/firstimpressions/
Might be of use
Just picked up my HD558's.
I must say, open cans is the way to go. I was expecting it to sound all open and airy like when using my speakers but the sound is right there just like on closed phones, but I can hear when people talk to me.
I was also expecting the bass to be low/nonexistant due to it being open but I do believe it's as good as the closed HD380 pro's I had a little while back.
Audio quality is superb, I mean it's a pair of $190 Sennheisers so it's everything I expected.
As far as comfort go they're a bit tight, but I just got them so I'm gonna give it a few weeks to let it loosen up. The ear pads are comfy as hell.
All in all I'm a very happy man right now and I regret nothing about my choice.
I'm just waiting for the refund for my 380's to finally come in so I can buy a proper sound card to go with these excellent headphones.

Do you think they are any good for metal music? Also, I don't get the Sennheiser series... Is it the higher the number, the better?
Like, 558 is better than 555, and better than 460 or something...
Could someone explain it to me?

Sennheisers models go in tiers of 100, so HD200 series, HD300 series, HD 400 series etc.
In the tier the higher number the better is true yes, but that's not true for the lower tiers. For example, a 280 is better and more expensive than a 418.
As far as the 500 series go, lemme explain.
When sennheiser made the 500 series, they made 3 headphones.
The 515, 555 and 595. Then some years later, they updated it with the 518, 558 and 598 which where all meant to replace their respective predecessors (558 to replace 555 and so on).

I understood all of what you said, except for this bit... Can you explain some more?
Is a 280 better than 355, 455 and 555? Because 80 is higher than 55. Does that mean that 280 and 380 are equal?

There is no 355, or 455.
They just make headphones and give them a number based on their performance and price range.
The general "higher number = better" applies to 90% of the case. One particular example of deviation is that the 280 and 380 are professional studio monitor headphones in the $120 range while for example the 418 is just a normal headphone.

their "normal" headphones http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/home_en.nsf/root/private_headphones_wired-headphones

Budget: 0-55$
Country: USA
Ebay: No
Purpose: Gaming 85%, Music 15%

Right now planning on getting: http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-PC-151-Noise-Canceling-Microphone/dp/B000NOR89Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1310153995&sr=1-1
One other thing... Do all the Sennheisers have the same bass? I want one that's good for metal.

Superlux HD668b and Zalman mic-1 clip on mic.
I have the microphone and it's quite good for the low price and the superlux headphones will outperform the sennheisers you posted.
