My PortaPros are pretty good but they keep shorting out every so often after repairs. I'm thinking of stepping up to some iGrados, but are there any tips to keeping them functional?
I don't like my iGrado, they hurt my ears and they don't sound that good (I like my KSC75 sound better)
you could send in your portapro for repair, or just buy a $13 pair of KSC75 to clip onto your porta pros headband

Thanks, I might decide on sending them in for repair instead.
Still, any tips for taking care of headphones?
I'm still struggling wether i should get the Grado SR-80i (What's the difference between SR-80 and SR-80i?) or the Alessandro MS1's... I could say that the band I listen to the absolute most is Iron Maiden.
The Grado's are a bit more expensive, but the Alessandros have so long shipping time.
I've read that the Grado's are better for high music, and the MS1's an all-rounder?
Is that true? The MS1's more clearer, and the Grado's more bassy.
Which one is better for heavy metal?
Damn, this is so hard...
I need a microphone for my PC, the cheaper the better, but not too cheap it just breaks when I touch the box. Preferably to have a stand and an on/off toggle. I'm in the UK, thanks.

Can't go wrong with this mic, and just set up a mute toggle with autohotkey or similar if you need it.
So I bought the Zalman mic-1 as people advised me to but it's really fucking quiet, so quiet I have to max out the microphone boost in windows to make it sound normal, at which point it's accompanied by hideous amounts of noise.
I remember reading all over the place that it picks up sounds in other rooms and shit, I can barely make it pick up my voice when it's centimeters from my face.
It's plugged into the back, the sound circuit is Realtek ALC889 and I have spent the past week scouring every single setting and slider and everything is maxed out.
Am I doing something wrong? Would this be fixed with a good sound card? If so, what sound card?

The SR80i is a newer revision with new drivers and a new cable. There has been a fair bit of debate on Head-Fi about the differences between the SR80 and MS-1, you've pretty much summed up the things people agree on, the MS1 is more neutral and is a better all rounder. The SR80 does have more bass but I've never had a problem with lack of bass on my pair of MS-1s.
Both pairs will be great for heavy metal. I've heard both (albeit only briefly in the case of the SR80i) and I do prefer the MS-1 overall. That'd be my recommendation, especially as they're cheaper over here in Europe.

If it's noise as in interference then yes a sound card will help. It's also normal for you to have to use microphone boost on pretty much any standard microphone.
However I have found Realtek codecs to have much stronger microphone boost than pretty much any discrete sound card, so that's worth considering if you're pushing it to 30dB or whatever.
Also depending on what you're using it for you may be able to boost it in software and avoid the noise. For example Mumble can provide significant amplification, and you could probably do something with Virtual Audio Cable though I am not familiar with the options.
It's just that the microphone is insanely quiet without any boost and is only barely good enough with full boost, nothing like what people described. Something has to be wrong.
I downloaded and installed the drivers form realteks site, it didn't help and the boost in realteks HD audio manager only goes to 30db.
The noise is just low frequency buzzing and background interference that comes with boosting it.

Yes.

Looking at getting a JVC HA-RX900. Anybody have a pair of these and got any opinions?
It's these:

I have used the older model JVC headphones before and they seem to work pretty well, though I can't really give any specifics as it was quite a long time ago.

By the way, what does an amplifier do, really? Make it possibly to listen to higher sounds?
And would it be recommended to buy an amplifier for the MS1's?

they're good
I've heard that the HARX700 are better sounding, but the 900 are better for gaming because of a better soundstage
Are Sennheiser HD 598's any good for casual music listening?
what is your definition of 'casual'? either way they will be fantastic but you'll want an amp with them
Going to post a review of the HD518s later.
In short, they are absolutely terrific. Better than any headphones I've had before.
the same friend of mine that bought a Q9650 three months ago for ~$450 just bought the G35.. ughh I can't stand it when people don't think before buying their things.

Which ones should I get from those?
I can get any, though under $250ish would be good.

598s are obviously the best choice, but you'll need an amp/dac to get their potential.
Anything lower?
I'd rather get something under $250.
595s then
Any big difference between Sennheiser's HD201 and HD515?, I'm not an audiophile and I don't really hear too much music, but I want some good looking, cheap and durable headphones and they both seem okay.

they're completely different, one's open and one's closed, the 515 sound much better most likely.

Get a pair of 558's and mod them by removing the tiny piece of foam behind the drivers, it makes them almost identical to the 598's.
There's tons of guides for modding the 555's, the prodecure is almost the same. Remove ear pads, unscrew 3 screws, remove driver, remove foam, put back together without foam.

Here are some (poor) pictures from when I did my mod.

That piece of rectangle sticky back foam is what you remove, it aparently helps the midrange and lower frequencies to make it sound much like a 598. I'm no expert so I won't say anything on specifics but it did definitely sound better after I did the mod.
Any recommendations for a max of £50ish and main use for music?

A pretty crappy explanation is that some headphones require more power than a normal output is capable of delivering; an amp increases the audio signal to a higher level. Cheaper headphone amps will simply increase the volume, but better ones will affect the sound in other ways.
Some headphones require an amp to get the potential out of them. For instance, Sennheiser's HD650 and HD800 headphones really need a decent amplifier. If you tried to use them straight out of your PC or iPod then you are wasting the potential of them, plus, it is unlikely that your PC or iPod will be able to drive the headphones to a sufficient listening volume.
As for the MS-1s, an amplifier isn't needed. They can run fine out of anything.
