Just out of curiosity, are you planning on doing the mod?
If it makes them better, I'm all for it.
If it makes them better, I'm all for it.
Well as with most things audio some people think it makes them uncompromizingly better, some think it loses some clarity in the low end I think, I don't remember. The good thing is it's easy to undo and even without the mod it's a great pair of headphones.
So, I suppose this is last-chance recommendations for anybody who is helpful! I've set my sights on the HD 558s (HD 555s are about $100, and I can get 558s for about $115.)
Budget - $100-$120.
Ebay: No.
Music: 100%
On a related note, has anybody had experience using a receiver as an amp? I am soon replacing my current receiver with an updated HDMI version, and I am wondering if it would be better to just buy a dedicated amp/dac over using the receiver.
It depends on what sort of music you listen to. But I doubt you'll be disappointed by the HD558s. As chipset said though, do the mod, this makes them sound closer to their bigger brother. (HD598)
I'm looking for some decent-looking (read: not huge and clunky), light headphones. (Fold-able is a plus, since I'm going to use them while travelling.)
Price range: 40-60 bucks.
E-bay: No.
50/50 music/gaming.
Sennheiser PX-100 (or ideally PX-200 if you can find them for $60). Maybe a pair of iGrados?
Anyone know if these are any good?
Zalman ZM-MIC1s clip on mics.

I'm looking to buy some new headphones along with my new build soon (Budget is about $100). I am going to be using them for gaming primarily, although I will probably also listen to some rock music. I don't really care if they are closed or not. I was thinking of getting the Audio Technica AD-700. Would they be good for that purpose, or are there better headphones in that price range?

Clip on mics are really inconvenient - get a desktop mic

Great choice, but only if your sound card has a global equaliser. If not, buy a Xonar DG or consider something else.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to buy a sound card with my new build, but I plan to put one in once I save up some money for one. Should I just put off buying them until I get one?

If you're going to be mostly using them for gaming, then the AD700 is perfect. When it comes to music, rock should play okay on them, they do have a lack of bass though.
bass is overrated

I won't be listening to rock extremely often, so I should be fine. I really would like to get the AD700s, but I am not sure if they would be worth it if I don't have a sound card when I get them.
My build may be delayed for a little while longer, so I may be able to do some work to get enough money to get a sound card. What would be a good sound card within a $100 budget?
I went ahead and bought a pair of Sennheiser HD 25-1 IIs for £140, so I really hope they are worth it. A great thing about these is the fact that you can replace every part, every pair of headphones I had have broke within 6 months so this is a great feature. Do you think I should get a sound card or will my on-board be fine?
I've decided that, since I don't have enough money to get both a decent sound card and the AD700 right now I am going to save the money and buy them later on, once I have enough money for both.

What about quality differences between clip ons and desktops?

I think I'll go for the PX-100 then! Thanks.
Curious, are there any full-sized, around-the-ear headphones that are not open (aka don't leak)? I'm expecting none are ideal, but one of the traits important to me is ability to listen to music without disturbing those around me.

I've got the MDR-XB-300's and these headphones are fucking amazing. Don't be fooled by the "Extra Bass" line. It's not overpowering, the tones are rich and deep, highs are clear, overall an amazing set of headphones
Not saying these are the best, but they fit your requests.
Hey I'm currently looking to buy a new pair of headphones and this time instead of getting dollar store in ear headphones I'm looking for something a bit nicer.
Mu budget range is $50-$80. I would prefer open headphones.
The first and foremost use for these headphones should be for gaming. I do listen to a small bit of music, mostly DnB, but I spend 90% of the time in games. I already have a clip-on mic that works pretty well.
Finally, I will be wearing these for hours at a time and would gladly sacrifice quality for comfort.
After using my steelseries siberia headphones for a year and 6 months the left can stopped playing sound. Needing a new pair to replace them.
Looking to spend anywhere between $100-200 for the nicest pair that can give nice deep bass beats for those heavy bass songs and those explosions in my games. They need to be comfortable for 4+ hours, those siberias made my ears sore after a couple hours. A circumaural pair that effectively blocks out outside noise too.
Budget:50-100
Can you use Ebay:yes
Country:Canada
Isolation:closed
Purpose:mostly games and music with a small amount of videos/movies
Musical Tastes: Drum and Bass and Rock mainly
also any suggestions for mics as well would be appreciated
What about quality differences between clip ons and desktops?
Entirely dependant on what mic you get. I always recommend this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000185ALA/ref=oss_product

Are you sure your onboard audio does not have an equaliser or some form of bass boost? Some do.

ATH-M50
Ah, thanks a lot, bought :D
Budget: <$100
Ebay: No
Country: US
Isolation: Preferably closed, or semi-closed
Purpose: 75% Music, 25% gaming. Music involves drum and bass, rap, hip-hop, rock, pretty much all genres
I was looking around myself and was wondering if the HD668B would suit?
Ordering 558s in a couple days, will post pictures and first thoughts.
edit:
Ordered the 558s, fucking shipping estimate is like ~5 days..hope it isn't actually that long..
$147, damn. If I were to get these should I get a sound card and amplifier?
If you don't have one, yes, a soundcard and amp would do serious wonders.

Get a Xonar DG
Mine were also quite expensive, I guess I should get an amplifier and sound card too

Xonar DG has a built in amp sufficient for pretty much all headphones.
I just noticed that, will be picking up one of those soon!
