Say that I want a pair of Headphones that'd be great for gaming, and I've got onboard 5.1, what's a good buy?
What is the absolutely cheapest sound card I can possibly get my hands on that has coax digital out?
I'm using optical from my motherboards intergraded to the control pod of my z-5500 sound system which acts as a rather nice DAC and amp. Problem is there's tons of bugs, largest of which is probably that when nothing is being transmitted it sort of drops the link between my computer and the pod, so when some sound does come the first ~0.5 seconds of it is completely cut off, something that is insanely annoying and that no amount of driver updates/reinstall seem to fix. Using 3.5mm plugs leads to some degradation in sound quality, it's not massive but I notice it.
I'm only assuming here that there will not be any quality degradation using coax as even if the sound card i use is shit, it's still entirely digital. Right?
So again, what is the cheapest sound card money can buy in this country that has coax out?
And how do you know that isn't the z-5500? I'm guessing that's what it is because they're a terrible set of speakers.

depends on what you want the most, bass for explosions or clarity and soundstage so you can tell exactly where things are

there's no such thing as entirely digital
I'm hoping for a mixture of both, so my weapons sound powerful in Battlefield, but I can still hear the distant chatter in Skyrim. Are these a good Headset, you think? http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6671736&CatId=6898
no, extremely overpriced for what you get
these are the closed alternative (better bass, slightly smaller soundstage) to the widely considered best mid/high end gaming cans: http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-A700-Audio-Technica-Headphones/dp/B000E9VKUQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321737742&sr=8-1
they weren't bassy enough for me when I first got them so be aware that you'll need to use an EQ or some form of bass booster to get them to more acceptable levels (I am a bit of a bass head though so take that with a grain of salt)
They look pretty nice. I've never used a set without a mic though, so I'm treading in dark waters right now.
[editline]19th November 2011[/editline]
You know what, I've heard your name a lot when it comes to headphones, the reviews look phenomenal, I think I'll get those.
What do you all think I should get for a mic then?
I was looking at that... Where would it attach though?
I was looking at that... Where would it attach though?
it clips onto the cable a la

Damn, it can really pick up your voice clearly from there? That's really nice.

Yes the bugs are almost certainly due to the z-5500 control pod but getting a cheap ass sound card with coax out is a hell of a lot cheaper and easier than getting a new speaker system.

What I mean is since it's a digital signal even if it's a crap sound card there wont be any degradation in quality, since its just 1's and 0's.

My cables are flat. Think it would still clip on?
My cables are flat. Think it would still clip on?
Depends on how thick it is, looking at mine it seems if it's thinner than 4mm it wont fit as intended and you'd have to macguyver it on somehow.

you have a $100 desk microphone, why would you get that

You can see it from the side down towards the bottom of the photo. Seems like I'm fucked then.

The condenser is annoying me. It is unusable on the weekends due to the Nascar races as well as the fact the stand takes up room.

The hardware a digital signal passes through does not degrade the quality of the content of the digital signal, thus any shit sound card will do for a coax out as the DAC is in the control pod of my z-5500. Or if I'm mistaken, please educate me how.
I prefer the fostex t50rp the headphone it's self is made for virtual recording like this, this will do virtual recording better than well prehaps all headphones.
The way this headphone sounds is exactly like virtual recording and that is how i like my sound and is tons better to pinpoint where sound is coming from and is why i use the t50rp for gaming plus with better clarity this clarity with the way it sounds makes this clarity more forward in your ears due to nature of the way it is recorded (non virtual recording) i.e. all headphones that not like the t50rp with virtual sound the t50rp sounds balanced and correct but with games the sounds are like 1 step forward and 1 step backwards but still sounding like virtual sound.

You are correct. The sound card won't be doing any processing of the signal.

What? This post makes no sense. Try to use full stops and stop repeating yourself in the same sentence.
The headphone the way it is made and tweaked goes extremely well with virtual recording such as virtual hair cut other headphones can't do this as well.
Does that make sense?
The way this t50rp sounds, sounds exactly like the way virtual haircut sounds except the t50rp it self does the same effects, a sound engineer would of understood this.
You have not heard the t50rp.
He's seemingly just spamming shit from Head-fi.
Oh no those are my actual comments.
Well then you suck at grammar.
He is apparently saying that the sound-stage's ability to give virtual positional sound is superior to every other headphone in existence. I have a feeling he hasn't tried very many headphones.
Budget: Sub $50
eBay: Nope
Country: USA
Isolation: Doesn't Matter
Purpose: Music
Music Tastes: Classy stuff, no dubstep. Jazz like Bill Watrous. Lots of soundtracks like BSG and from video games. Occasional rock.
Previous Experiences: Well the only real pair of headphones I've ever owned is actually a headset, Sennheiser PC 350s. I love them a lot but they're goofy to carry around.
Comments: I see that Sennheiser is having a sale on amazon, care to recommend the best pair there around $50? Also I'm not sure if those are perpetually on sale, I remember the PC 350s were half off for forever. No earbuds. Thanks.

god shutup, you don't know shit about him and I know for a fact he's tried much better and a wider array of cans than you have or possibly ever will
his english is terrible but it's easily understandable

No... it can't. It sounds like you'd expect it, like you're talking really far away from it. I got one with my HTF600's, it's not very good. It picks up my voice better if I clip it on it to my glasses...
It sounds okay from my glasses, but honestly unless you cannot stand desk mics you should get one of those. That's what I'm gonna do.
