I'm 12 and starting to learn to install parts into a computer.

Just an advice, get a 4850 instead of a 250, performs about the same but is cheaper
Static ain't that dangerous, I've never grounded other than the occasional touch to the case that you will do anyways. Never had a single thing break because of that
I've been assembling and upgrading computers and laptops since I was ~8. It's not hard.
I've heard of people installing something for the first time and not correctly aligning things up, so they pushed so hard that they broke a part.
So always be sure to align things perfectly and not apply too much force, if it doesn't go in when you push then you should try to realign.
The thread title reminded me of a meme.
Yes, i think it is a perfect age, I personally started younger, but yea, i think its good...
PS: couldn't resist sorry, but i have this mental image of you pulling something out and saying "I am 12, what is this?"
It is just legos, but things have fans.
legos for rich kids
I started learning what goes where when I was 8 :saddowns: I just wanted to make my BF2 work better.

So you are 12 now?
I'm almost 14 as of now, and I started learning and experimenting with this stuff from around 7 years old. The basic stuff such as putting things into place isn't hard at all.
OP you are a slightly respectable 12 year old. But you would have been more respectable if you didn't feel the need to tell us your age because that just shouts "Look at me! I'm 12 and I'm making a computer! Come tell me how much of a child genius I am!".

Static discharge may not happen a lot, but when it happens you have probably fried some component and you are fucked. It's really dangerous, I don't agree with you.

Never has happened to me in the ~5 years I've been playing around with components
Don't install norton and mcafee and you will be set. Building one is piss easy.

Even if it does happen, you are touching the case as a precaution because you aren't a moron.
You clearly have no idea anyone is on about, theres thousands of places on the net you can get in depth help if you really want to learn.
Go back to annoying people on MW2 until you understand static.
I'm 14 at the moment, and indeed he seems pretty mature online anyways, I used to be a complete dick to everyone.
Why has this thread become a cesspool of people saying what age they began working with computer hardware at?
I remember my first time installing a RAM card.
Pageking demands your first time!

Also, OP, you joined when you were 10? And I thought I was young, I joined when I was 12.
-snip-
I started to play around with the computer when I was five, and having a computer back then was considered as a great luxury.
Good ol days...

This, sad enough :frown:
Incomming wall of :words:
But when I usually go on with our computers at home so do I mostly just lay it in my bed while and sometimes using a Anti Static strap to nullify the static electricity.
I don't like how that sentence sound :ohdear: but it's true.
Well I remember the one time when I actually bought my own computer :buddy: Using some money I got for doing some summer work at my dads job. Got about 350€ for it, with 250€ going for the PC and a CRT screen. And then bought an external DVD writer for about 70€ still working flawless after about 4years.
It was a used Dell Optiplex GX 240. And one time I figured that I would detach the CPU. Detached it without lifting the locking handle (which made it a bitch to remove). Then when I tried to reattach it, some legs where bent so it would light yellow instead of red/green as this meant that it was a CPU failure. Good enough so did my dad just straighten the legs and this time I put it in the right way :eng101:.
But as that time I was about 13 so didn't I think it was too bad for being my first really tinkering with a computer, and even since so have I been better with them and like working with them. And then not just upgrading the drivers and such, but really work with them like inserting new parts etc.
But one thing that is important when putting the stuff in. Don't you ever dare to put the RAM in the wrong way!
Also upgrading CPU? Find matching sockets.
And that's my 2 cents.
PS. I miss the old days when I was totally illiterate with computers. Well almost I did know what things was and so, but didn't really assemble my own PC (which I did the year after and is still working today). :crying:
