I'm 12 and starting to learn to install parts into a computer.

I started with white box building when I was 6. If you played legos before, this should be no different. Just don't put any of the components in your mouth.
Age isn't important. Once you have installed a few parts, you can install pretty much anything. I started off with a graphics card, then RAM, and the largest thing I have replaced and installed myself in my PC was the PSU. I did it on the first try with no previous experience with a PSU. When I actually have the money to build my next computer from scratch it should be interesting installing the CPU for the first time.
That's around when I started to really get involved with computer building. It's a nice refresher to see a 12 year old who doesn't act 12.
I'm going to buy my GeForce GTS 250 and 500gb/1TB HDD on Saturday, and going to learn HOW to install it by my dad.
Is this a good age to start?
I turned 12 on the 24th of August.
I just turned 18 on August 24th. :buddy:
Yep. I find it kinda embarrassing to look through my earlier posts now, but what can you do. I wasn't a terrible poster, just not that good.
Wait, I think I was 13. Not like it makes a difference.
What year was this again?
Good luck. It's not hard at all, and don't stress it. I installed my first hard drive at 12 and freaked the hell out.
I joined Facepunch when I was 12.
My quality of life has degraded ever since.
Also, good for you, OP. It's awesome to see kids these days actually want to learn something.

or use knowledge for destruction!
Because I'm going to go around getting my body full of static, opening their cases, and frying their components before they smash me with a hammer?
Uhhh..
What year was this again?
Eons ago, back in the archaic uncivilized wasteland of a world we had in 2007.
:bravo:
With todays color-coded + clearly labeled + keyed ports and slots, there's really no more "putting things in backwards and frying" anything anymore... I remember getting so frustrated when my IDE cables weren't keyed and they were in backwards.
I hope your computer blows up in your face and your new GPU decapitates you... and also pics or it didn't happen!
Wated Wearts

Hey i hope you blow up when you make another troll post!
commas, commas, everywhere,.
Haha everyone in this thread discharges frequently. I myself just discharged not 10 minutes ago.
i see what you did there.
i saw it when reading
I remember getting so frustrated when my IDE cables weren't keyed and they were in backwards.
FUCK IDE cables.
Just make sure your power outlets are actually grounded.
In my old place we had shitty electrical wiring and outlets were not actually grounded. Thus I touched the case and it hit me with electricity. Thank god I didn't touch any of pc parts.
Damn i started modding my PC at ten. Go for it kid, and make shure you dont play with PCs that are actually powerful or valuable.
Yeah, good to hear.
But apparently you have to touch the case before you do anything or something like that.
And apparently you shouldn't do anything with it on the carpet, but we've done upgrading/building it on the carpet HEAPS of times.
Wear Gloves and/or a static watch. saved my ass quite a few times also it's good that your'e learning at this age, i hope you studied on it! :fyadride:
I did it when I was younger. (Only then i was building with pentium 3's and agp video carts and not brand new shit)
FUCK IDE cables.
Sadly, all the PCs my clients bring to me have IDE cables, usually Pentium 4 or Celeron CPUs, and PC133 or DDR1 RAM, integrated graphics, prebuilt shitboxes from Walmart or Dell.
I have only had a few clients bring me systems where SATA was not only supported, but also being used.

I just ground myself to the nearest radiator. And never had any problems.

Cut off the connectors. Those "naturally organized" cables are great for soldering buses
and what is this?
Discharge!
Age doesn't really matter.
So long as they can spell and have good grammar I don't care
I know, I'm not going to go 'GET THE FUCK IN *pushes harder*', I'm not like that.
Also, first I get lovely hearts, because I'm learning how to build a computer :)
But then I get dumbs because of my age, Ohh, facepunch..[img]http://www.facepunch.com/fp/rating/heart.png[/img]
I rated you dumb because you think you're special because you can put a graphics card in a slot at 12. It's a dumb idea for a thread and nobody gives a shit.
