I'm sure I'm coming off as someone just gleaming to lick apple's balls, but I really do believe that they are being reasonable in this respect. Having an income and working in a situation where you produce a product and expect others to pay for it and applicable support really changes your mind about what should and should not be free from the creators' point of view. It also changes your mind on who should actually be maintaining certain things (ie. who really has a vested interest in a technology versus those who want it as a bullet point on their sales powerpoint).

But that is their job. Without that back compatibility, their largest customers (enterprise) would simply not upgrade. Apple has no such issue; those who would fight this are relatively small and make up a smaller portion of their revenue.
Gosh I've posted more in this thread than I have all week.
While I can understand the appeal of Apples politics to [del]average retard[/del] casual user. To someone like me, it only creates obstacles and unnecessary costs.
pfffahahahahahahaha, you're telling me that paint is an acceptable image editor
It works better than OSX image editor i.e. nothing.
At the same time, Microsoft is much better at keeping third party support and compatibility at a much much higher level.
[editline]29th January 2011[/editline]
Also, new Windows OSs come out more seldom with much bigger changes.
tiger to leopard was a huge change!
Ohoho, I see someone's browsing FP with Safari, writing documents in Pages and edits pictures in...my bad, I forgot OSX doesn't have any buildt-in image-editing software.
Pages doesn't come with OSX.
Word doesn't come with Windows.
Paint is a joke application.
Windows doesn't come with some things that OSX does and OSX doesn't come with some things that Windows does.
These are not reasons to dismiss a platform. If they were, everything should be using Ubuntu because it literally comes with everything, for free, and maintains a very active support community because the people who use the OS keep it up to date.
you completely just turned this thread into a os x vs. windows thread, good job.
I didn't, people like you did.

Or you can install "linux distros" on your macbook

No thanks, I think I'll amuse myself a little longer.
this thread is hilarious
i don't really see the issue here. I'm tired of companies that keep on supporting their old outdated OS's, look at windows xp, it's been going on far too long and preventing further innovation because people are too stubborn to get with the times.
wait woah woah, why not just bootcamp windows in a tiny partition and do a minimum install of windows with just java for minecraft ?
Be reasonable.

Minecraft is worth it.
"oh shit, i have a 166mhz pentium 1 laptawp and i cunt run crysis bcoz microsfot isnt supporting win3.11 omg"
Ugh. Just update, everybody is moving forward, just not Microsoft with windows xp. (xp should be already dead)

There's NO reason to not to release JRE 1.6 for Leo, they're just being dicks about it, and no, I'm not paying 30 bucks to upgrade this piece of shit, I shouldn't have to in the first place.
Difference between 10.5 and 10.6 is just as big as between Vista and 7, and Vista supports DX10-11 and all that stuff just fine. Sure XP didn't get any DX10 but it's not like I'm trying to run Tiger here.
[editline]29th January 2011[/editline]
and by the way, Microsoft has stopped supporting XP, so it's IS dead.

This is really a really, really, fucking shitty comparison. XP is from '01, Leopard is from late '07(?). Microsoft is charging a 100$ for their OOS, because, well, they are making money of software, not hardware. If you count in the fucking amazing buttload of money that Apple is making of it's hardware, they have payed for the next (atleast) 10 OS updates of 30$ each. There's really no fucking comparison, and anybody who tries to compare OS X price-wise to Windows is dumber than a pile of shit. Only the first part of this reply was to you, so don't take the rest of it personal.

Ok so let me get this straight you have a Macbook and refuse to pay 30 to update your OS just so you can update your Java. Then you go a slam Macs because they don't come with any image editing software.
So why are you using a mac in the first place if you don't even like them to begin with?

Yeh, I've tried this but it only makes every Java app crash.
Thanks anyway.
So why are you using a mac in the first place if you don't even like them to begin with?
Because it's the only available option for me right now until I'll get my desktop fixed.
Using Mac is still better that not using anything.

I think that maybe it only works if you install Update 6 for 10.5 (some sort of exploit maybe?) the thing is, Apples website only offers you to download Update 4 , 5, 7 and 8 and Update 6 for 10.4 (not 10.5).
Dwnloading the update from some random website right now but their speed is like 10kb/sek

That's unusual, I usually get fast speeds from Apple.

I get 2MB/sek from Apples website, the problem is, Aplle have Update 4, 5, 7 and 8 on their website but not Update 6, the one I apparently need.

Oops, sorry, misread. :P
If you're so pissed off, go buy a Windows machine if it's "cheaper" and "better Java support" and comes with a shitty image editor.

He's probably going to do that, but if you read the OP, he didn't choose to use the Mac. Also, even though a Windows based machine is cheaper, doesn't mean it's cheap. Sure, he's gonna get alot more for his money, but if he wants something decent, he must use atleast a 500$, which still is some money.

I've got already 666$ (No joking, that was the price) custom buildt machine at home, it's just really really funky right now.

I know nothing about Macs' OS, but is it free for you to upgrade?
I know nothing about Macs' OS, but is it free for you to upgrade?
No it's not.
Does Mac OS come with any software worth mentioning? I hear Macs have good video/image editing software. Is it included in the OS?
Does Mac OS come with any software worth mentioning? I hear Macs have good video/image editing software. Is it included in the OS?
Nothing worth mentioning comes with the OS and, this is my personal opinion, Apples video editing software (they've got no image editing software of their own) is the biggest piece of crap I've ever used, maybe excluding Adobe Premiere Elementals.
Also, it makes me mad when people say that Macs are good for media editing, because they're not. Photoshop is the same on Mac and on PC.
I like to fuck with the macs at our local Library. That is what i like about Mac.
