Got a new 19" monitor.
Yeah, it is SD, but it looks awesome compared to my old 17" monitor!
Extremely off-topic but:
All the red faction games are on 75% sale on Steam. Just in case you didn't know already.
I bought all four games.
But i did not realize that the other games were included in Red Faction Armageddon.
I got the hint when Steam said something about giving my extra Red Faction gifts away.

Quick question: What's the best way to protect an external hard drive?
I'm moving in a few days and I have a WD 1.5tb drive that I want to bring with me in my laptop bag. I'm afraid it might get damaged, is there any better way to carry it/any other way to prevent this?

Maybe put it in some kind of hardshell box, Depending on size. Maybe just strap it into something else that is sturdy and has space over. Like an Oven :v:
External HDDs are fine being bashed about as long as it's not on.
typical firefox fanboy
you're using fucking chrome.
why has nobody noticed this except me.
Wrap it in bubblewrap I guess
AUTOMERGE :argh:
Over the last few months I've put a WD portable drive through hell, dropping it a couple of times (including while still spinning) and jostling it all the time and it still works without a hiccup.
Funny thing is is that with my lack of any computer whatsoever, it's my backup drive.
I'm so fucked if that thing fails on me.
Oi Firefox vs Chrome people
go away, we don't care and we don't need your hate
I did a fun thing a few years ago with an External HDD. My family had bough a portable 250GB that uses a separate powersupply. This being early 2000 it was expensive as hell. I manged to borrow it so that i could bring some stuff over to a friend. Not longer then 1 meter from the door i smacked the plastic bag where the HDD was into a railing. The whole stairway rang like a dong. Scared as shit i went over to the friend to see if it still worked. The light was on but it did not connect or spin up. Even more scared when i had to leave i said that i had forgotten the HDD at the friend.
At that point my mom goes "Well, To bad you forgot the power cord, Then he can't use it"
I had no idea what she was talking about as a saw that the power cord was lying in my room. I called my friend to have him check the power cord. Underneath it said "Netgear" and i later discovered that it was just powerful enough to run the LED but not manage to get it to work
Basically i was scared shitless that i had destroyed a $250 HDD but was stupid enough to take the wrong cable

Most hard drives will be fine as long as they aren't on. One random drive I looked up can handle 300G without damage while unpowered. For comparison, a car crash will give you 100g or so, and spacecraft reentry is usually under 7g.
My mom thought that my monitor/tv got a virus because it was in Spanish and I have not changed it back. wish this thread was not just flame wars now.

TehWhale seems to have been given the boot for now, So back to speedtests and other such matters
Eh, I was just poking gentle fun, not my fault.
Thanks everyone. I guess I'll leave it in my bag then.

Been on my laptop all day, turn on my pc when I get home, log in and I'm greeted with thousands of tiny green dots all over the screen.
Anyone who's ever experienced hardware failure will know that bitter sinking feeling in your heart when the fact sinks in that it's gonna cost you x hundreds of dollars to fix it and something you did probably caused the failure (I unlocked my 6950 and fitted aftermarket cooling).
Anyways I notice the steam login window doesn't have any green dots, so I turn on my second monitor which is running on displayport and sure enough, no artifacts. I jiggle the dvi cable a bit and it all goes away.
Remember kids, always use those screws to fasten your DVI/VGA connectors!

It's interesting, instructor is bearable.

If you don't screw them in firmly, you're doing it wrong...

I recently did a thorough clean of my case, must've forgotten to screw the dvi cable in when I put the pc back.

Did the instructor actually say that?
Looks like a normal way of showing a forest to me.

Haha yeah he really did
Haha yeah he really did
It doesn't really make any sense though, you can't connect them like that with AD.
You have a forest, with a domain, with domain controllers, you can't distribute the load like that, you need to have back-up domain controllers at each location, using the Chicago site as a backup for Tokyo means shit slows down like hell if Tokyo goes down.

I never screw in my VGA/DVI connectors. Mainly because: laziness. And that the VGA cable going to my secondary monitor is almost taut so if I pull my PC out to connect something or work on it, it feels like its going to tear the DVI port right off my GPU.
Right, some General Discussion!
Who else thinks that an analogue keyboard would be really good for PC gaming?
As in, each key has a pressure sensor that senses how far down you push it.
This means we'd need some special drivers, since DirectInput can't support 114 axes, but I still think it could work really well.

He just pointed out it looked like the triforce, you're pulling something out of nothing :psyduck:
