Can't tell if serious

Who actually has a server with 2TB of RAM???[/QUOTE]

God, what a dumbass. Everyone knows that if you overclock, Alienware can do IPv12 easy.
Watson, the IBM Jeopardy playing computer, has 15TB of RAM IIRC.

Again iirc it's not one big computer it's a bunch of smaller systems working over a network.
you people use IIRC WAY too much, iirc

[sp]But can it run minecraft.[/sp]
Unrelated to the current discussion, but last thread someone mentioned a "miracle PC repair disk" for drive inspection or something.
I could have sworn the name began with "h" or "n" but I don't remember.

What if any single one of the processors can access any memory location, without going through any sort of networked API or shit? That's normally the distinction between a supercomputer and a cluster (when such a distinction is made) - true supercomputers, not clusters, are necessary for problems where data cannot be divided easily, such as nuclear physics simulations.
[QUOTE=Baldr 2.0;30272571]Hirens bootCD?[/QUOTE]
Sounds right, and even if it isn't, holy hell does that look useful. Thanks.

Then sure it's a system with 16TB of RAM
Pfft, only cool people have 1PB of RAM!
About that earlier post, I let a friend use Team Viewer to control my PC, and I forgot to revoke his control when I was eating. He also uninstalled tons of my games.
[QUOTE=Sinclair;30273271]Pfft, only cool people have 1PB of RAM![/QUOTE]
Real men have 1 yottabyte of ram.

Just for shits and giggles, I started designing my own computer architecture. It's never actually going to exist, of course, but it's fun to think about "how would you design this differently?". It's a very clean system - fully orthagonal, homogenous and designed for efficiency. Also, everything is hot-swappable, at least in theory.
The memory model was the first thing I figured out. Measurement is in 256-bit words, and with a 64-bit addressing scheme, you get 128 exabytes of space. That's 134 million terabytes. That's a lot.
I also decided to make memory completely flat - no segments or pages. Everything is in one big memory pool. Including storage - disc space and SSD space are included in the same memory system as RAM. Makes virtual memory and swapfiles a snap. Same for RAMDisks.
I did the math - according to Kryder's Law (think Moore's Law for hard drives), it should be ~40 years before home users start hitting that memory limit.
So I was at the cemetery today, paying my respects to deceased members of my family and what do I see? A monument for some guy in comic sans...

This is probably way late, but all this discussion about comic sans got me wondering if there's a comic serif.
[url=http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/hvdfonts/hvd-comic-serif-pro/]There is, and it looks quite good.[/url]

I might be mistaken, but that looks like the font used in World of Goo, doesn't it?
[QUOTE=LemONPLaNE;30273531]:eng101:[/QUOTE]
Fuck. I thought it was spelled wrong, but the spellchecker didn't say anything about it. Must've been thrown off by the BBCode.

Similar, but I don't think so. World of Goo's fonts aren't serif-y enough.
[editline]dksja[/editline]
Tell you what, let's just write a worm that replaces comic sans with comic serif on every computer. The tech illiterate can still have a "fun" font that doesn't make web designers, graphic artists, or anyone versed in technology want to tear their eyes out.

It'd make no difference, we'd still want to rip our eyeballs from their sockets.

I'm so bad at typing on this Android keyboard. :saddowns:
Today I was at a family gathering and my cousin asked me what I was going to college for. I said computer programming. A bit later, he said, does Purdue (college I'm planning on going to) "have good programs for computering?" And yes, that is an exact quote. He didn't even slip up, he legitimately thought that is what it was.
So i google for 'Exabyte to Petabyte' first result: [url]http://lists.apple.com/archives/dvdlist/2001/apr/msg00231.html[/url]
Between bits and bytes, a nibble? [b]wat.[/b]

You know, it's not like Apple doesn't keep up with the times, they're not that fucking dumb.
Jesus fuck, I'm fine with Apple hate JUST WHEN IT'S FOR THE RIGHT FUCKING STUFF.
Seriously, who heard of a nibble? I'm not illiterate.

I knew what a nibble was.
