Best GFX Card for about $300-400 AUD. Upgrade from the 8800GT.

Ugh, this thread only reminds me of all the upgrading I need to do when I get the money. I have the same GPU and SPU as the OP, but 2GB of RAM.
I may even switch to ATI and get a 5850 or something. Also, regarding more recent posts, I guess I have a different motherboard than the OP. Mine supports SLI to my knowledge.
EDIT: But then I need to upgrade to a higher power PSU, and then get more ram, which means i need to buy a 64-bit OS. 'Tis the woes of upgrading a PC.
My motherboard I got like 3 months ago has only 1 D:
Sucks for you, the last 3 motherboards I've bought each have 3 PCIe x16 slots on them. It's prettymuch expected/standard now.
Just get the 5850, and OC it if you want better performance.

no it isn't what the fuck are you talking about

I'm fairly sure 2 slots is still quite standard and sufficient for people without money to burn.

Aren't still 1 slot pretty much the standard? Or was it in the last year or something? Most motherboards i see nowadays have only 1 slot, well budget mobos maybe, but still
In theory, they are the same speed... but only in theory... i honestly don't know, but in reality, for both cards to be working at 100% is unlikely, unless ur running something really really high end...
And moving on up from an 8800GT is a good call, right now, those are "Reccomended" card's for games, like bioshock 2 and mass effect 2,
I ran bioshock 2 with my computer which is:
pentium 4 dual core 3ghz
8800GT (512MB)
1gb RAM <-- fail i know, 5 year old computer
Pentium 4s aren't dual core, they have HT.
Forgive me for being silly, but does over clocking it to the same speed means exactly the same performance? Or would I have to OC it a little further to match the performance.
It means the same performance within 1 frame of difference. The 5850 has less stream processors and ALUs. That's it. They use the same core, the same everything, the 5850 just has less of those two components and runs at a lower voltage so it uses less power and puts out less heat. You can actually overclock it a little past 5870 stock speeds and it will outperform a 5870, and it's one of the easiest things you can possibly do to increase performance. The 5 series is probably the most easily overclockable series of both manufacturers ever released.

The standard $250 motherboard maybe. Even the one I bought for $200 has 3 PCIe 2.0 slots (2x16 or 1x16+2x8) but not 3 full PCIe x16 slots.

:downs:
You buy 'high end' super expensive boards. Most people have more reasonable budgets and can't afford to buy into low gain high cost 3-way SLI or Crossfire.

Sure if you buy 'high end' super expensive boards.
psh no, 3 slots is for poor people

I thought dual i7's weren't even possible on the x58 chipset?? Ahh well, I'm guessing the standard nowadays is that you can solder on another chipset :v:

I think it uses Intel's Xeon cpus
Ahh yes of course. Or it uses the 5500 chipset (haven't heard of that before).
