or maybe they could had made like 10 somewhat square steps in dx 9 / 10 and don't overhype it. At least the ramps is good for handicapped people like me.
The point of the demonstration is that you don't need to model the stairs.
Because it is so hard to make a rectangle and place another one above and behind it and loop that. And stairs wouldn't have to be made into a model, it can be done with world geometry.
Of course a DX11 demo is going to emphasize tesselation to unrealistic levels. It's a tech demo not a practical application.

stupid question(i'd find out myself, but i don't have the time to compile a program with geometry shader support), how new is tessellation for OpenGL? i know it's apparently brand spankin' new with DirectX, but that information's useless to me as the only somewhat game-worthy comp i own is a linux. i'd like to know, as i have an older ATI card and don't have the money to upgrade(talkin' X1300 here, got it for free).
Tessellation has probably been around as a custom extension or whatever they call it ever since the first X1800's that first had the tessellation hardware. I think it was X1800 anyway. But before DX11 it was an ATI exclusive thing, and as such 100% completely irrelevant.
well, X1300 is part of the X1300/X1550 series, but i'll try it anyway. hours of compiling for just one test, but if it works, hours of tesselation fun! :v: i doubt it's going to work though, ATI's only recently fixed their glsl problems.
