I got a text message from Rogers today, which said that the 911 access free is increasing... Is that 911 fee normal to charge for? I checked the other Canadian carriers (Bell, Telus) and their sites listed that fee as well (At $0.75).
Are all carriers charging this?
Isnt 9-1-1 meant to be free, even if you dont have a simcard/plan?
Yeah it's normal, just Canadian telecom companies flaunting around their monopoly as usual.

It is free to make the call and I can remove the SIM from my phone and still make the call, though for whatever reason Rogers is wanting to charge monthly for it.

Dammit, I sorta saw this one coming.
Do american carriers do this too?
I actually thought that was illegal.

it probably is
Rogers Wireless customers that require emergency assistance can dial 9-1-1 any time, free on the Rogers Wireless network.
this is from their site
rogers.com/911
it's monthly fee
check last tab

The 911 fee isn't regulated by the government and they can change it any time because in the contract it states they can change fees however and whenever they see fit that are not regulated. It's just a big fuckup of a gray area that is exploited and nobody can do anything about it.
They're charging you monthly to make 911 calls? That's fucked up. Nobody in the US does that (As far as I know).
I wonder if I'm getting charged for a 911 access fee since we don't have 911 out here.

It must be something related to prepaid phone plans, since AT&T does it too, though it doesn't apply in all states.
It's an odd area. All carriers will charge you a 911 fee but they have to let everyone be able to dial it, even without a sim card.
There is a charge for it because someone has to provide 911 service for those phones that don't have a service provider.
i got it too
Who the fuck makes people pay to make 911 calls. "I'm sorry, you're going to have to die here, I haven't payed my phone bill yet".
Emergency numbers should be free, always.
So now americans doesn't have free healthcare nor can they call 911 if they have no money left on their phone.
This is getting better and better.

If you actually read the thread, you'll find out that they can still call 911 if their phone is inactive, but they get charged 0.75$ as opposed to 0.50$ monthly if their subscription is active.
It's a quarter. Get over it.

They are free. This guy could stop paying his phone bill and he'd still be able to dial 911. He just wouldn't be able to dial anyone else and he'd have collections on his ass.

Rogers is Canadian, and you don't have to pay to dial 911.
I'm running out of bad readings here.

Restock. (I was there and it was like really big)

The problem is in Canada our cell, landline, internet and television services are all controlled by Rogers and Bell. They can keep increasing the prices little by little even though the service never improves.

It doesn't help that the CRTC is protecting their interests rather than the public's. (Like they should)

Keep thinking like that and let the government and private enterprise raise cost of living until it's unbearable? No thanks.
In this very specific case, rising the cost of 9-1-1 operation is normal (since they're adding new services to it, it's quite a complex infrastructure), but you shouldn't overlook any sort of price increase just because it's a small amount. It adds up.
