I just watched this:

The ASUS VG278H 3D monitor's msrp is $699. However, this monitor can work with PS3, 3D television, and other things that is not just computer gaming. This was one of the biggest downfalls with the first 3D vision was that you could not use anything other than PC gaming.
Anyway, I'm a huge fan of 3D movies and I was actually thinking of buying the nVidia 3D vision set. Luckily I waited because the new version is soon to be released.
What do you guys think of the new version, or Nvidia 3D vision in general? Is 3D really worth the hefty price tag?
I'm still using shutter glasses with CRT monitors.
If a company managed to make a 120hz version of a large high res monitor, I'd go for it. For now, I don't need it that bad.

Dual-link DVI maxs out at 2560x1600@60hz. The only thing that can drive 2560x1600@120hz is displayport. Then you lose daisy-chain support for monitors.

Yes, I know.
And?

DVI will no longer be used by AMD in 2015. Might as well start making monitors prepared for that now.

Look into the Samsung 750/950 series if you want a more generic 3D as you described as well as one of the closest LCD monitors to a CRT you can get: http://www.pcmonitors.org/monitor-reviews/samsung-s27a750d
I'm not sure how good the 3D Vision 'support' is on it these days however
I got a 60" 720p 3d tv for $700 last year which works with shutter glasses. Works great with PC/XBOX/PS3 :)
I have an ASUS 3D monitor and it's great, I also have a PS3 so this may be worth getting!
i have the first kit.
USED IT 3 TIME.
and i just tried again with a 3d movie, and nop.
