• What is actually bad about Dell?

Well, i dont know why i hate them, but, i just do. Plus, i was playing on a Online game once and they had right to use the dell logo, the laptop was used as a enemy information target, and the script that was made by developers of the game BROKE randomly and ruined the game for like 2 weeks. So, my hate has spread to being virtual. [editline]6th May 2011[/editline]
I had a dell laptop also. Absolute shit to the end. OS: Windows Vista 2 GB of ram And a battery that barely lasts 1 fucking minute. Seriously. ONE FUCKING MINUTE! Shitty charger slot that the charger always falls out of. 2 Broken dell chargers and a targus charger that I'm using now. Hell. Targus' chargers are better than most default chargers. And 3 reinstall's of windows vista because of the shitty battery/charger. And NEVER buy their HD monitors. Blurry and faulty.
Well, i see what your problem was, VISTA! try without vista next time!

I don't know what they do because the cooler is glued onto the CPU it seems.
The whole "knowingly sold defective computers" thing killed Dell to me.
The coolers are hinged on a bracket that goes through the 2 holes in the motherboard and the other end screws into the case
My XPS's MoBo layout is fine, idk what you guys are talking about.
Some of their mid and higher end models have micro-ATX motherboards. They have some weird stuff though, if you try to mount an aftermarket cooler on them you'll see.
Well, i see what your problem was, VISTA! try without vista next time!
You're an idiot. Vista isn't bad. Vista hate is.
You're an idiot. Vista isn't bad. Vista hate is.
Vista was a mistake like Millennium was. Microsoft should have learned from WinME and aborted Vista with a coat hanger and just gone straight to Win 7.

Vista was a learning period for them it seems, much like ME taught them to just move onto the NT kernel instead of faffing with their old one.
how the hell does the CPU cooler mount? :gonk:
I think this is how it mounts... :wtc:

[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/uTGyN.jpg[/img_thumb] :wtc:
The CPU socket is rotated 45 degrees like that due to the unusual layout of the BTX standard. Traces between the CPU, NB and RAM need to both be the similar length so that data arrives at close to the same time time on each trace and wired in such a way as to avoid crosstalk and other bus noise.
My Dell Laptop is fine for me. I wish I had gone with a Lenovo, but this is suiting me well for most stuff. i just wish it had a more matte finish, hate gloss. Dell is pretty decent in the mid-price range.
It's funny how glossy screens have become standard that cause terrible glare, when in the 90s, companies used to make glare reducing screens to place over CRTs.
Waste of money
Only reason I have my Alienware (laptop, desktops are rediculous no matter what) is because I got a $2500 laptop for $1500. Then I added another HDD and doubled the RAM. [editline]9th May 2011[/editline] And the warranty is amazing.

Exactly, I'll just get one of those and be happy.
Vista was a mistake like Millennium was. Microsoft should have learned from WinME and aborted Vista with a coat hanger and just gone straight to Win 7.
have you even tried millennium?
Windows ME was god awful. There's really not much else to say about it.
Vista was a mistake like Millennium was. Microsoft should have learned from WinME and aborted Vista with a coat hanger and just gone straight to Win 7.
You're telling that to someone who's using Vista currently. Haven't had a single problem, crash, etc since I've built this computer. I'll agree that 7 shouldn't have been a separate operating system, and should've been an update to Vista, but it's not inherently bad. Just could've been much better.
I think Vista itself had its flaws, but I believe the main reason it was such a failure is that at the time it was released, the world wasn't ready. The average computer of then didn't have the proper hardware to run it as intended. If your system has a Pentium 4 and 512 megs of RAM, don't blame your shitty performance on Vista :frog:

I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but I just skimmed the thread real quick, so I might have missed something. I have a Dell at my father's house (because he absolutely refuses to let me build one myself - not by choice (but I did get to pick out the specs of it, thank god)) and even in the most well-ventilated places, it runs very hot and loud, relative to other machines. The GPU idling typically stays around 55 degrees C. The CPU is better idling, but both shoot up to 80-85 under heavy load. I wish I had a tool to measure sound, but I don't, so let me describe it to you: loud, obnoxious, and impossible to get used to. I've had it for... 8 months(?) now, and the sound is still the most noticeable thing in the room. It will never be an ambient nose, it always demands attention. Regardless, though, it runs alright for an $800 computer. Which is surprising, because the CPU and RAM is the only thing in the build fit to keep up with modern games.

Then again that's because I have a second one 2cm away from it... My only other complaint about Dell is the power supply in my really old desktop. There's no on/off switch, just cable in/out. There should be one of those things!

A friend was just bragging about his new Dell. i7 2600k, 16gb RAM, and *drumroll please* a GT 220. That's right, a motherfucking GT 220. The kind of shit HTPC's laugh at. Any desktop company that makes such an insanely imbalanced computer should be shot.
Major corporations exist to make a profit while reducing costs. They do a good job at that. Engineers aren't interested in that kind of shit though (and everyone here is interested in some sort of engineering to some degree). We can create machines that perform equally or better, while reducing our own costs, at the expense of a small bit of extra labor. That's what's so bad about Dell. If you have the knowledge and ability, then you can help yourself more efficiently than they can. If I had to buy pre-built, they wouldn't be at the bottom of my list, nor at the top.
Do any of you remember Tiny? They were so bad that the company folded.
