So how is everyone finding the preview in terms of stability and compatibility? I'm planning on installing it on my main pc since I don't have any other pcs. I can handle a bit of bugginess and everything's gonna be backed up, I'd just rather not have loads of hassle of it randomly all breaking and having to reformat regularly.
If you have backups just go ahead and try it, if it breaks you go back and it's an annoyance once time. I find the novelty of the new features worth it.

Anyone else think this would be nice? It is something I have wanted from live tiles for a while, because I do enjoy them, its just, I don't want to sit with my start open or anything to actually look at them.
I still find it quite funny how Microsoft still hasn't found a way to go back an OS. Like Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 are hardly different atm yet we cannot easily go back?
installing the preview on my retina Macbook. m/kb work in setup so that's definitely a good sign so far [editline]3rd October 2014[/editline] I adore how the installer is basically the same since vista [editline]3rd October 2014[/editline] and it runs at 1600p off the bat. nice
You can disable DWM, but it breaks even more stuff this time i believe (e.g. taskbar not showing any windows) I'm still experimenting - i'll post results later

They already a new Start Menu so there's really not much else they can go back on.
Just like Windows 8, stopping DWM breaks all the metro stuff, and opening any fullscreen metro app will render windows unusable :c Edit: The context menu that shows up when you right click the start button comes up when you hit WIN+X... Not really usefull as all apps that you start from there will end up behind the black screen too, though :c Looking for a way to get out of this right now, lol
win10 is very snappy on my rmbp, but i still find it shocking how much of the UI microsoft hasn't bothered to update since vista. so many old icons and UI elements (picture viewer, for example still has glossy buttons and things like that)
what are the big changes in win10 compared to 8? what I've seen is a few new icons, a nice looking startmenu, virtual desktops and 1px borders. is there a hotkey for virtual desktops by the way?
Win+tab, I think. Or alt+tab. One of the two. [editline]3rd October 2014[/editline] Also, I hope they make the new start menu a bit more like Windows 7's, or at least fix things like not being able to rename some items, things doubling in the All Programs menu, and other weird issues. I really like the rest of what they've done, especially that sweet ass Task Manager and file copying dialogue.
huh weird. When I press internet explorer it opens the default browser which is Firefox on my system. I guess it's a bug or a feature.

Try making a new shortcut; you might have a shortcut that launches an HTTP address instead of iexplore.exe for some reason.
Something i noticed which bugged me
Not sure if this has already been noticed, but the cmd window can now be maximised and resized without constraint. I find it rather nice, and I hope it was intended.
Scrolling the volume slider is there on Windows 8.1 and probably 7. It is not a bug nor a new feature.
I think he's on about being able to scroll the window behind the volume meter.
I think he's on about being able to scroll the window behind the volume meter.
Oh. I didn't realize that. It turns out the volume slider does still scroll if the mouse is off the volume slider. My Mistake.
Something i noticed which bugged me
feature it's part of the scroll without focusing thing, since the volume slider is treated as a window, when mouse cursor is off of it, you scroll the thing under it, which is facepunch

I can enable it with AltDrag in windows 8.1 (and older), but it also kills any form of scrolling in modern applications (and scrolls the windows behind it iirc)

Sadly Windows 10 seems to stop custom files being downloaded in Source games. I can't seem to figure out what's wrong, Wireshark shows the packets are being sent, some are received.. Tried some of the obvious things - disabling the firewall, completely disabling UAC with registry temporarily, fiddling with internet explorer settings, ticking and unticking proxy auto-detect.. Bah! I know it's a silly little thing, but I wonder if some sort of networking component was changed.
However, it's important to understand that Microsoft has stated that Windows 10 represents the LAST major version of Windows. From here on out (after Windows 10 releases) there will be one Windows (no obvious versioning), and it will be updated regularly.
Seriously? I really doubt it. MS likes to change their mind quite a bit.
I'm thinking about running the Preview in VBox, is it worth it? I've been using Windows 8 for few months, so I'm looking for some new-ish features that are presented in W10. Did they bring 'Basic' themes back?
Seriously? I really doubt it. MS likes to change their mind quite a bit.
I think they're gonna take an osx/ios style approach, where its just small yearly incremental updates. It'll presumably be like Windows 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 etc. That is, at least until Windows in this form is still relevant. Presumably way down the line, computers and computer interactions are going to be totally different, so who knows what'll happen.

So I've got the Preview running. Really liking it so far, actually. It's really, really stable compared to what I expected. It's more stable than the Windows 8 previews, that's for sure.
BSODs now support multiple monitors apparently. Was reading a Skype message on one monitor, glanced over at the other and there was a BSOD. I'm curious to know if that's a bug or not, pretty neat though.
