So, I'm on Windows 10 now. But I can't activate, it fails. I used English version (with Turkish language pack) of Windows 8.1 before Windows 10. I upgraded to the Turkish one. Is that why?
Did someone say there's some kind of script to find your Windows 10 key?
i used speccy lol
If your activation is still wonky contact MS chat and they'll sort it out for you.
' VBS Script to get the Windows(R) 7 Product Key from a PC's registry. ' ' Save the VBScript as "getWin7Key.vbs" somewhere on your Windows7 PC. ' Now, when you double-click the local script file an alertbox pops up ' displaying the product key stored in the machine's Windows registry. Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") KeyPath = "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\DigitalProductId" MsgBox ExtractKey(WshShell.RegRead(KeyPath)) Function ExtractKey(KeyInput) Const KeyOffset = 52 i = 28 CharWhitelist = "BCDFGHJKMPQRTVWXY2346789" Do Cur = 0 x = 14 Do Cur = Cur * 256 Cur = KeyInput(x + KeyOffset) + Cur KeyInput(x + KeyOffset) = (Cur \ 24) And 255 Cur = Cur Mod 24 x = x -1 Loop While x >= 0 i = i -1 KeyOutput = Mid(CharWhitelist, Cur + 1, 1) & KeyOutput If (((29 - i) Mod 6) = 0) And (i <> -1) Then i = i -1 KeyOutput = "-" & KeyOutput End If Loop While i >= 0 ExtractKey = KeyOutput End Function
This when saved as a .vbs file will display your Product ID in full.
I wasn't getting the notification to update, and I saw that there were a few failed attempts to upgrade to windows 10 in my update history. So I -Deleted everything out of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download -Opened cmd.exe in administrator mode and typed in "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" It failed to start downloading a few times when forcing through command prompt, but after a few tries Windows 10 is now downloading at 30%. Hope the upgrade goes smoothly when it's finished!
Is anyone ever going to help me or is this a world conspiracy so I can't use the store and mail/calendar app on Windows 10 ?
This doesn't turn UAC off.
May not turn off UAC, but at least it makes it less annoying.
So far very disappointed in this OS. If you get rid of the tiles, you're left with a start menu that is significantly less powerful and less customizable than the Windows 7 start menu. I can't add anything to it unless I only want my most recently used apps. I can't change the order of the shortcuts like Music or Pictures or Documents. I can't add a "This PC" link anywhere. I can't do anything at all with the entire left side of the start menu - pinning to it is impossible, as everything automatically pins to the tiles rather than to the left part. Functionally, it's significantly worse than Windows 7. It's also worse than the earlier Windows 10 preview builds, because every time I google this issue I get results that show me that old Windows 10 build had that exact functionality built right in, and they decided to disable that ability for no discernible reason. If I don't want to use tiles, I should be able to disable them. My only option now is to download Classic Shell, which isn't optimal. Just make a Windows 7 start menu and throw some tiles on the side, for fuck's sake, that's what it was in the preview builds, why would you fuck it up again after the backlash from Windows 8? Second, Cortana is unremovable. Entirely. The program cannot be forced to end and it will not go away no matter what you do. It will suck up an unreasonable amount of RAM for a program that is set to be disabled, so I can only assume that it's still tracking what I'm doing. I don't want that. Go away. Just make it so disabling Cortana actually fucking disables Cortana. I'm going to have to dig into my registry to cut this bloat out of my OS. Third, the Settings app is an abortion. Navigating it is an absolute pain in the ass - I can't figure out where to go to re-enable "Most Recent" on my Start Menu. They cleaved out a good chunk of the customization stuff from the Control Panel and didn't replace it in the Settings app, so now you have to download a third-party program to get that functionality back. Just leave that functionality in the Control Panel if you haven't finished replacing it - it's inaccessible now and you've decreased the usability of your product. Incredibly stupid. I was very excited after seeing some of the Windows 10 preview builds but I'm pretty disappointed in it now. It looks nice but the functionality is butchered. Why they chose to slice out so much of the functionality of the preview build start menu is a mystery to me - I was alienated by the changes in Windows 8 and they did the exact same thing in Windows 10 after having a totally functional start menu in Windows 10. Why would they cut it back for the release version? Just mediocre through and through. Shoves Microsoft account logins and OneDrive and Cortana in your face and does as much as it can to prevent you from removing them. Can't wait for registry hacks to neuter all the bloat this was delivered with. I'm happy with the performance and happy it sliced several GBs out of my hard drive with the slimmer install profile, but it's still bloated with features that cannot be fully disabled. Frustrating.
Which one do I choose? People are saying not choose the first option.
I did the first option, coming from Win7. I usually do a clean install but this time I thought what the hell, I'll just upgrade. It took about an hour and a half, counting downloading the files. I've installed Windows many times, so it was definitely longer to do an upgrade rather than a clean install. However now I don't have to reinstall my programs or data. Two glitches for me. One, I use Comodo firewall and it doesn't play nice with Win10 yet. Second, I downloaded the latest(I thought) Nvidia GPU drivers for Win10 yet it still detected newer drivers available, so I had to download and install GPU drivers a second time. One interesting thing, I had cleared about 17.5gb space on this hard drive in preparation for the upgrade which requires 16gb. After installing Win10 and deleting the restore files for my previous installation and those $Window-WS files, I now have over 25gb free! Somehow I see a net gain of around 8gb going from Win7 to Win10
Both of the radio buttons in the installer allowing you to keep apps and program files are greyed out for me - it's only allowing me to not keep anything. I have Windows installed on an SSD and a lot of other files on my secondary HDD. I can't find out anywhere though if choosing to keep nothing will erase just the contents of the SSD or both hard drives. I assume it's the former. Anyone know?

So I don't have any of it's processes running and I actually can't enable Cortana because it is not working with Russian at this moment. According to MS help here is the settings which control if Cortana is available or not: 1) OS Language 2) Voice Recognition language 3) Selected country in regional settings If you change at least one of those settings to unsupported then you won't be able to use Cortana at all and this might lead to unloading all processes associated with it.
How long have you waited on that screen? I'll keep it on for a long while and see what changes.

If you are attempting to replicate the functionality of the old system you are stuck in the past and need to see the value in the current system. Firstly, live tiles are extremely useful and can show relevant information. Secondly, the variable size of the tiles allows pinned programs to be fit in a smaller area and be accessed quicker. This is faster and more efficient than the old top down system, and allows more programs to be accessed quicker. 2. You can remove Cortana. Simply remove the speech recognition and text to speech under optional features and disable it under the options. There you go. Take your 161.3MB of completely functional and quite useful at times Cortana and remove it entirely. Enjoy. 3. Literally took me MAYBE 5 seconds to find. Why? Because if you literally search for "Most used" or "Recently Installed", the option for it is rapidly found in a matter of miliseconds and is displayed to you. Once again this is you being unfamiliar with the OS and refusing to relearn where things are, and to be frank, you should know what search term to use to find what you are looking for anyway.

Once again this is you being unfamiliar with the OS and refusing to relearn where things are, and to be frank, you should know what search term to use to find what you are looking for anyway.
Okay, live tiles are fantastic, lovely. I don't want to use them. If I didn't want to pin items to the taskbar in Windows 7, I wasn't forced to, I could still use Desktop shortcuts. I'm frustrated because I want "This PC" to appear directly above Music and Pictures and Settings and all of those options, as it did in Windows 7. That is impossible to do. I might get used to tiles, and I've been using them, but I'd rather just have a short listing of apps on the left side. I've also opened and closed itunes and steam about 15 times and they will not appear on the "Most Used" apps. But Maps will, which I used once. If I could make Windows actually recognize my "Most Used" apps, I'd be happy enough, but it won't do that - it's populating it with apps that I haven't used at all (Calendar) rather than my actually most-used apps. And it's impossible to just place a few apps there yourself - you are forced to rely on Windows to populate it, and Windows is not recognizing the actually most-used apps so it is being populated with apps I have zero interest in. I've started using Tiles and I like the idea and they're functional and nice. But the left part of the start menu has been significantly cut down even from the last couple Windows 10 preview builds. It's less functional than the unfinished preview builds. I like Tiles and I'll be using them, but having the left side be an uncustomizable mess of apps that I don't actually use at all is just annoying.
I'd just say even if you're uncomfortable in the changes they've made 7 -> 10, keep in mind nearly everything iterated upon is an improvement over 8/8.1
But they're a downgrade from the preview builds of Windows 10, which is absurd. I read a ton about the preview builds and was very happy about the start menu returning functionality from Windows 7, and now that I've installed it I realize that the start menu from the preview builds is gone.
